Parashat BaMidbar

And  יהוה  spoke unto Moshe in the wilderness of Sinai, in the Ohel Mo’ed, on the first day of the second khodesh, in the second year after they were come out of the land of Mitzrayim, saying, 2“Take the sum of all the assembly of B’nei Yisra’el, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, every male, by their polls; 3from twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Yisra’el: you shall number them by their hosts, even you and Aharon. 4And with you there shall be a man of every tribe, every one head of his father’s house. 5And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you: of Re’uven, Elizur Ben Shedeur. 6Of Shimon, Shelumi’el Ben Tzuri-Shadai. 7Of Yehudah, Nakhshon Ben Aminadav. 8Of Yisakhar, Nethanel Ben Zuar. 9Of Zevulun, Eli’av Ben Helon. 10Of the children of Yosef: of Efrayim, Elishama Ben Amihud; of Menasheh, Gamaliel Ben Pedahzur. 11Of Binyamin, Abidan Ben Gide’oni. 12Of Dan, Ahiezer Ben Ammi-Shadai. 13Of Asher, Pagiel Ben Okhran. 14Of Gad, Eliasaf Ben Deu’el. 15Of Naftali, Ahira Ben Enan.” 16These were the elect of the assembly, the princes of the tribes of their fathers; they were the heads of the thousands of Yisra’el.

And Moshe and Aharon took these men that are pointed out by name. 18And they congregated all the assembly together on the first day of the second khodesh, and they declared their pedigrees after their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, by their polls. 19As  יהוה  commanded Moshe, so did he number them in the wilderness of Sinai. 20And the children of Re’uven, Yisra’el’s firstborn, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 21those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Re’uven, were forty-six thousand and five hundred.

Of the children of Shimon, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, those that were numbered thereof, according to the number of names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 23those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Shimon, were fifty-nine thousand and three hundred.

Of the children of Gad, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 25those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Gad, were forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty.

Of the children of Yehudah, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 27those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Yehudah, were seventy-four thousand and six hundred.

Of the children of Yisakhar, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 29those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Yisakhar, were fifty-four thousand and four hundred.

Of the children of Zevulun, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 31those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Zevulun, were fifty-seven thousand and four hundred.

Of the children of Yosef, namely, of the children of Efrayim, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 33those that were numbered of them,  of  the tribe of Efrayim, were forty thousand and five hundred.

Of the children of Menasheh, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 35those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Menasheh, were thirty-two thousand and two hundred.

Of the children of Binyamin, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 37those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Binyamin, were thirty-five thousand and four hundred.

Of the children of Dan, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 39those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Dan, were sixty-two thousand and seven hundred.

Of the children of Asher, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 41those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Asher, were forty-one thousand and five hundred.

Of the children of Naftali, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; 43those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Naftali, were fifty-three thousand and four hundred.

These are those that were numbered, which Moshe and Aharon numbered, and the princes of Yisra’el, being twelve men; they were each one for his fathers’ house. 45And all those that were numbered of B’nei Yisra’el by their fathers’ houses, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war in Yisra’el; 46even all those that were numbered were six hundred three thousand five hundred and fifty. 47But the Levi’im after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them.

And  יהוה  spoke unto Moshe, saying, 49“But the tribe of Levi you shall not number, neither shall you take the sum of them among B’nei Yisra’el; 50but appoint the Levi’im over the Mishkan HaEdut, and over all the furnishings thereof, and over all that belongs to it; they shall bear the Mishkan, and all the furnishings thereof; and they shall minister unto it, and shall encamp round about the Mishkan. 51And when the Mishkan sets forward, the Levi’im shall take it down; and when the Mishkan is to be pitched, the Levi’im shall set it up; and the common man that draws nigh shall be put to death. 52And B’nei Yisra’el shall pitch their tents, every man with his own camp, and every man with his own standard, according to their hosts. 53But the Levi’im shall pitch round about the Mishkan HaEdut, that there be no wrath upon the assembly of B’nei Yisra’el; and the Levi’im shall keep the charge of the Mishkan HaEdut.” 54Thus did B’nei Yisra’el; according to all that  יהוה  commanded Moshe, so did they.
