1And all the assembly lifted up their voice and cried; and the people wept that night. 2And all B’nei Yisra’el murmured against Moshe and against Aharon; and the whole assembly said unto them, “Would that we had died in the land of Mitzrayim! Or would we had died in this wilderness! 3And why does יהוה bring us unto this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be a prey; were it not better for us to return into Mitzrayim?” 4And they said one to another, “Let us make a captain, and let us return into Mitzrayim.” 5Then Moshe and Aharon fell on their faces before all the congregation of the assembly of B’nei Yisra’el. 6And Yehoshua Bin Nun and Kalev Ben Yefuneh, who were of them that spied out the land, rent their clothes. 7And they spoke unto all the assembly of B’nei Yisra’el, saying, “The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land. 8If יהוה delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it unto us, a land which flows with milk and honey. 9Only, rebel not against יהוה , neither fear the people of the land; for they are bread for us; their defense is removed from over them, and יהוה is with us; fear them not.” 10But all the assembly bade stone them with stones, when the K’vod יהוה appeared in the Ohel Mo’ed unto all B’nei Yisra’el.
11And יהוה said unto Moshe, “How long will this people despise Me? And how long will they not believe in Me, for all the signs which I have wrought among them? 12I will smite them with the pestilence and destroy them, and will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.” 13And Moshe said unto יהוה , “When Mitzrayim shall hear, for You brought up this people in Your might from among them, 14they will say to the inhabitants of this land, who have heard that You, יהוה , are in the midst of this people; inasmuch as You, יהוה , are seen face to face, and Your cloud stands over them, and You go before them in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night; 15now if You shall kill this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of you will speak, saying, 16‘Because יהוה was not able to bring this people into the land which He swore unto them, therefore He has slain them in the wilderness.’ 17And now, I pray, let the power of Adonai be great, according as You have spoken, saying, 18‘ יהוה is slow to anger, and abundant in compassion, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation.’ 19Pardon, I pray, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of Your compassion, and according as You have forgiven this people, from Mitzrayim, even until now.” 20And יהוה said, “I have pardoned according to your word. 21But in very deed, as I live, and all the earth shall be filled with the K’vod יהוה , surely22 all those men that have seen My K’vod, and My signs, which I wrought in Mitzrayim and in the wilderness, yet have put Me to proof these ten times, and have not hearkened to My voice, 23surely they shall not see the land which I swore unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that despised Me see it. 24But My servant Kalev, because he had another spirit with him, and has followed Me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it. 25Now the Amaleki and the Kena’ani dwell in the Vale; tomorrow, turn, and go into the wilderness by the way to Yam Suf.”
26And יהוה spoke unto Moshe and unto Aharon, saying, 27“How long shall I bear with this evil assembly that keeps murmuring against Me? I have heard the murmurings of B’nei Yisra’el, which they keep murmuring against Me. 28Say unto them, ‘As I live, says יהוה , surely as you have spoken in My ears, so will I do to you: 29your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness, and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, you that have murmured against Me, 30surely you shall not come into the land, concerning which I lifted up My hand that I would make you dwell therein, save Kalev Ben Yefuneh, and Yehoshua Bin Nun. 31But your little ones, that you said would be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which you have rejected. 32But as for you, your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness. 33And your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your strayings, until your carcasses are consumed in the wilderness. 34After the number of the days in which you spied out the land, even forty days, for every day a year, shall you bear your iniquities, even forty years, and you shall know My displeasure. 35I יהוה have spoken, surely this will I do unto all this evil assembly that are gathered together against Me; in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die’.”
36And the men, whom Moshe sent to spy out the land, and who, when they returned, made all the assembly to murmur against him, by bringing up an evil report against the land, 37even those men that did bring up an evil report of the land, died by the plague before יהוה . But38 Yehoshua Bin Nun, and Kalev Ben Yefuneh, remained alive of those men that went to spy out the land. 39And Moshe told these words unto all B’nei Yisra’el; and the people mourned greatly. 40And they rose up early in the morning, and got them up to the top of the mountain, saying, “Lo, we are here, and will go up unto the place which יהוה has promised; for we have sinned.” 41And Moshe said, “Why now do you transgress the direction of יהוה , seeing it shall not prosper? 42Go not up, for יהוה is not among you, that you be not smitten down before your enemies. 43For there the Amaleki and the Kena’ani are before you, and you shall fall by the sword; forasmuch as you are turned back from following יהוה , and יהוה will not be with you.” 44But they presumed to go up to the top of the mountain; nevertheless the Aron HaBrit יהוה , and Moshe, departed not out of the camp. 45Then the Amaleki and the Kena’ani, who dwelt in that hill country, came down, and smote them and beat them down, even unto Kharmah.
אוַתִּשָּׂא כָּל הָעֵדָה וַיִּתְּנוּ אֶת קוֹלָם וַיִּבְכּוּ הָעָם בַּלַּיְלָה הַהוּא. בוַיִּלֹּנוּ עַל מֹשֶׁה וְעַל אַהֲרֹן כֹּל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֲלֵהֶם כָּל הָעֵדָה לוּ מַתְנוּ בְּאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם אוֹ בַּמִּדְבָּר הַזֶּה לוּ מָתְנוּ. גוְלָמָה יהוה מֵבִיא אֹתָנוּ אֶל הָאָרֶץ הַזֹּאת לִנְפֹּל בַּחֶרֶב נָשֵׁינוּ וְטַפֵּנוּ יִהְיוּ לָבַז הֲלוֹא טוֹב לָנוּ שׁוּב מִצְרָיְמָה. דוַיֹּאמְרוּ אִישׁ אֶל אָחִיו נִתְּנָה רֹאשׁ וְנָשׁוּבָה מִצְרָיְמָה. הוַיִּפֹּל מֹשֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן עַל פְּנֵיהֶם לִפְנֵי כָּל קְהַל עֲדַת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. ווִיהוֹשֻׁעַ בִּן נוּן וְכָלֵב בֶּן יְפֻנֶּה מִן הַתָּרִים אֶת הָאָרֶץ קָרְעוּ בִּגְדֵיהֶם. זוַיֹּאמְרוּ אֶל כָּל עֲדַת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לֵאמֹר הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר עָבַרְנוּ בָהּ לָתוּר אֹתָהּ טוֹבָה הָאָרֶץ מְאֹד מְאֹד. חאִם חָפֵץ בָּנוּ יהוה וְהֵבִיא אֹתָנוּ אֶל הָאָרֶץ הַזֹּאת וּנְתָנָהּ לָנוּ אֶרֶץ אֲשֶׁר הִוא זָבַת חָלָב וּדְבָשׁ. טאַךְ בַּיהוה אַל תִּמְרֹדוּ וְאַתֶּם אַל תִּירְאוּ אֶת עַם הָאָרֶץ כִּי לַחְמֵנוּ הֵם סָר צִלָּם מֵעֲלֵיהֶם וַיהוה אִתָּנוּ אַל תִּירָאֻם. יוַיֹּאמְרוּ כָּל הָעֵדָה לִרְגּוֹם אֹתָם בָּאֲבָנִים וּכְבוֹד יהוה נִרְאָה בְּאֹהֶל מוֹעֵד אֶל כָּל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. יאוַיֹּאמֶר יהוה אֶל מֹשֶׁה עַד אָנָה יְנַאֲצֻנִי הָעָם הַזֶּה וְעַד אָנָה לֹא יַאֲמִינוּ בִי בְּכֹל הָאֹתוֹת אֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתִי בְּקִרְבּוֹ. יבאַכֶּנּוּ בַדֶּבֶר וְאוֹרִשֶׁנּוּ וְאֶעֱשֶׂה אֹתְךָ לְגוֹי גָּדוֹל וְעָצוּם מִמֶּנּוּ. יגוַיֹּאמֶר מֹשֶׁה אֶל יהוה וְשָׁמְעוּ מִצְרַיִםכִּי הֶעֱלִיתָ בְכֹחֲךָ אֶת הָעָם הַזֶּה מִקִּרְבּוֹ. ידוְאָמְרוּ אֶל יוֹשֵׁב הָאָרֶץ הַזֹּאת שָׁמְעוּ כִּי אַתָּה יהוה בְּקֶרֶב הָעָם הַזֶּה אֲשֶׁר עַיִן בְּעַיִן נִרְאָה אַתָּה יהוה וַעֲנָנְךָ עֹמֵד עֲלֵהֶם וּבְעַמֻּד עָנָן אַתָּה הֹלֵךְ לִפְנֵיהֶם יוֹמָם וּבְעַמּוּד אֵשׁ לָיְלָה. טווְהֵמַתָּה אֶת הָעָם הַזֶּה כְּאִישׁ אֶחָד וְאָמְרוּ הַגּוֹיִם אֲשֶׁר שָׁמְעוּ אֶת שִׁמְעֲךָ לֵאמֹר, טזמִבִּלְתִּי יְכֹלֶת יהוה לְהָבִיא אֶת הָעָם הַזֶּה אֶל הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע לָהֶם וַיִּשְׁחָטֵם בַּמִּדְבָּר. יזוְעַתָּה יִגְדַּל נָא כֹּחַ אֲדֹנָי כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבַּרְתָּ לֵאמֹר, יח יהוה אֶרֶךְ אַפַּיִם וְרַב חֶסֶד נֹשֵׂא עָוֹן וָפָשַׁע וְנַקֵּה לֹא יְנַקֶּה פֹּקֵד עֲוֹן אָבוֹת עַל בָּנִים עַל שִׁלֵּשִׁים וְעַל רִבֵּעִים. יטסְלַח נָא לַעֲוֹן הָעָם הַזֶּה כְּגֹדֶל חַסְדֶּךָ וְכַאֲשֶׁר נָשָׂאתָה לָעָם הַזֶּה מִמִּצְרַיִם וְעַד הֵנָּה. כוַיֹּאמֶר יהוה סָלַחְתִּי כִּדְבָרֶךָ. כאוְאוּלָם חַי אָנִי וְיִמָּלֵא כְבוֹד יהוה אֶת כָּל הָאָרֶץ. כבכִּי כָל הָאֲנָשִׁים הָרֹאִים אֶת כְּבֹדִי וְאֶת אֹתֹתַי אֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתִי בְמִצְרַיִם וּבַמִּדְבָּר וַיְנַסּוּ אֹתִי זֶה עֶשֶׂר פְּעָמִים וְלֹא שָׁמְעוּ בְּקוֹלִי. כגאִם יִרְאוּ אֶת הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּעְתִּי לַאֲבֹתָם וְכָל מְנַאֲצַי לֹא יִרְאוּהָ. כדוְעַבְדִּי כָלֵב עֵקֶב הָיְתָה רוּחַ אַחֶרֶת עִמּוֹ וַיְמַלֵּא אַחֲרָי וַהֲבִיאֹתִיו אֶל הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר בָּא שָׁמָּה וְזַרְעוֹ יוֹרִשֶׁנָּה. כהוְהָעֲמָלֵקִי וְהַכְּנַעֲנִי יוֹשֵׁב בָּעֵמֶק מָחָר פְּנוּ וּסְעוּ לָכֶם הַמִּדְבָּר דֶּרֶךְ יַם סוּף.
כווַיְדַבֵּר יהוה אֶל מֹשֶׁה וְאֶל אַהֲרֹן לֵאמֹר, כזעַד מָתַי לָעֵדָה הָרָעָה הַזֹּאת אֲשֶׁר הֵמָּה מַלִּינִים עָלָי אֶת תְּלֻנּוֹת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֲשֶׁר הֵמָּה מַלִּינִים עָלַי שָׁמָעְתִּי. כחאֱמֹר אֲלֵהֶם חַי אָנִי נְאֻם יהוה אִם לֹא כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבַּרְתֶּם בְּאָזְנָי כֵּן אֶעֱשֶׂה לָכֶם. כטבַּמִּדְבָּר הַזֶּה יִפְּלוּ פִגְרֵיכֶם וְכָל פְּקֻדֵיכֶם לְכָל מִסְפַּרְכֶם מִבֶּן עֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה וָמָעְלָה אֲשֶׁר הֲלִינֹתֶם עָלָי. לאִם אַתֶּם תָּבֹאוּ אֶל הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר נָשָׂאתִי אֶת יָדִי לְשַׁכֵּן אֶתְכֶם בָּהּ כִּי אִם כָּלֵב בֶּן יְפֻנֶּה וִיהוֹשֻׁעַ בִּן נוּן. לאוְטַפְּכֶם אֲשֶׁר אֲמַרְתֶּם לָבַז יִהְיֶה וְהֵבֵיאתִי אֹתָם וְיָדְעוּ אֶת הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר מְאַסְתֶּם בָּהּ. לבוּפִגְרֵיכֶם אַתֶּם יִפְּלוּ בַּמִּדְבָּר הַזֶּה. לגוּבְנֵיכֶם יִהְיוּ רֹעִים בַּמִּדְבָּר אַרְבָּעִים שָׁנָה וְנָשְׂאוּ אֶת זְנוּתֵיכֶם עַד תֹּם פִּגְרֵיכֶם בַּמִּדְבָּר. לדבְּמִסְפַּר הַיָּמִים אֲשֶׁר תַּרְתֶּם אֶת הָאָרֶץ אַרְבָּעִים יוֹם יוֹם לַשָּׁנָה יוֹם לַשָּׁנָה תִּשְׂאוּ אֶת עֲוֹנֹתֵיכֶם אַרְבָּעִים שָׁנָה וִידַעְתֶּם אֶת תְּנוּאָתִי. להאֲנִי יהוה דִּבַּרְתִּי אִם לֹא זֹאת אֶעֱשֶׂה לְכָל הָעֵדָה הָרָעָה הַזֹּאת הַנּוֹעָדִים עָלָי בַּמִּדְבָּר הַזֶּה יִתַּמּוּ וְשָׁם יָמֻתוּ.
לווְהָאֲנָשִׁים אֲשֶׁר שָׁלַח מֹשֶׁה לָתוּר אֶת הָאָרֶץ וַיָּשֻׁבוּ וילונו (וַיַּלִּינוּ) עָלָיו אֶת כָּל הָעֵדָה לְהוֹצִיא דִבָּה עַל הָאָרֶץ. לזוַיָּמֻתוּ הָאֲנָשִׁים מוֹצִאֵי דִבַּת הָאָרֶץ רָעָה בַּמַּגֵּפָה לִפְנֵי יהוה . לחוִיהוֹשֻׁעַ בִּן נוּן וְכָלֵב בֶּן יְפֻנֶּה חָיוּ מִן הָאֲנָשִׁים הָהֵם הַהֹלְכִים לָתוּר אֶת הָאָרֶץ. לטוַיְדַבֵּר מֹשֶׁה אֶת הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה אֶל כָּל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיִּתְאַבְּלוּ הָעָם מְאֹד. מוַיַּשְׁכִּמוּ בַבֹּקֶר וַיַּעֲלוּ אֶל רֹאשׁ הָהָר לֵאמֹר הִנֶּנּוּ וְעָלִינוּ אֶל הַמָּקוֹם אֲשֶׁר אָמַר יהוה כִּי חָטָאנוּ. מאוַיֹּאמֶר מֹשֶׁה לָמָּה זֶּה אַתֶּם עֹבְרִים אֶת פִּי יהוה וְהִוא לֹא תִצְלָח. מבאַל תַּעֲלוּ כִּי אֵין יהוה בְּקִרְבְּכֶם וְלֹא תִּנָּגְפוּ לִפְנֵי אֹיְבֵיכֶם. מגכִּי הָעֲמָלֵקִי וְהַכְּנַעֲנִי שָׁם לִפְנֵיכֶם וּנְפַלְתֶּם בֶּחָרֶב כִּי עַל כֵּן שַׁבְתֶּם מֵאַחֲרֵי יהוה וְלֹא יִהְיֶה יהוה עִמָּכֶם. מדוַיַּעְפִּלוּ לַעֲלוֹת אֶל רֹאשׁ הָהָר וַאֲרוֹן בְּרִית יהוה וּמֹשֶׁה לֹא מָשׁוּ מִקֶּרֶב הַמַּחֲנֶה. מהוַיֵּרֶד הָעֲמָלֵקִי וְהַכְּנַעֲנִי הַיֹּשֵׁב בָּהָר הַהוּא וַיַּכּוּם וַיַּכְּתוּם עַד הַחָרְמָה.
