1And B’nei Yisra’el, even the whole assembly, came into the wilderness of Tzin in the first khodesh; and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miryam died there, and was buried there. 2And there was no water for the assembly; and they assembled themselves together against Moshe and against Aharon. 3And the people strove with Moshe, and spoke, saying, “Would that we had perished when our brethren perished before יהוה ! And4 why have you brought the congregation of יהוה into this wilderness, to die there, we and our cattle? 5And why have you made us to come up out of Mitzrayim, to bring us in unto this evil place? It is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.” 6And Moshe and Aharon went from the presence of the congregation unto the door of the Ohel Mo’ed, and fell upon their faces; and the K’vod יהוה appeared unto them.
7And יהוה spoke unto Moshe, saying, 8“Take the rod, and congregate the assembly, you, and Aharon your brother, and speak unto the rock before their eyes, that it give forth its water; and you shall bring forth to them water out of the rock; so you shall give the assembly and their cattle drink.”
9And Moshe took the rod from before יהוה , as He commanded him. 10And Moshe and Aharon gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said unto them, “Hear now, you rebels; are we to bring you forth water out of this rock?” 11And Moshe lifted up his hand, and smote the rock with his rod, twice; and water came forth abundantly, and the assembly drank, and their cattle.
12And יהוה said unto Moshe and Aharon, “Because you did not trust in Me, to consecrate Me in the eyes of B’nei Yisra’el, therefore you shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.”
13These are the waters of Meribah, where B’nei Yisra’el strove with יהוה , and He was consecrated in them.
14And Moshe sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom, “Thus said your brother Yisra’el, ‘You know all the travail that has befallen us; 15how our fathers went down into Mitzrayim, and we dwelt in Mitzrayim a long time; and Mitzrayim dealt ill with us, and our fathers; 16and when we cried unto יהוה , He heard our voice, and sent a Malakh, and brought us forth out of Mitzrayim; and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of your border. 17Let us pass, I pray, through your land; we will not pass through field or through vineyard, neither will we drink of the water of the wells; we will go along the highway of HaMelekh, we will not turn aside to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed your border.”
18And Edom said unto him, “You shall not pass through me, lest I come out with the sword against you.” 19And B’nei Yisra’el said unto him, “We will go up by the highway; and if we drink of your water, I and my cattle, then will I give the price thereof; let me only pass through on my feet; there is no hurt.” 20And he said, “You shall not pass through.” And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand. 21Thus Edom refused to give Yisra’el passage through his border; therefore Yisra’el turned away from him.
22And they journeyed from Kadesh; and B’nei Yisra’el, even the whole assembly, came unto Hor HaHar. 23And יהוה spoke unto Moshe and Aharon in Hor HaHar, by the border of the land of Edom, saying, 24“Aharon shall be gathered unto his people; for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto B’nei Yisra’el, because you rebelled against My word at the waters of Meribah. 25Take Aharon and El-Azar his son, and bring them up unto Hor HaHar. 26And strip Aharon of his garments, and put them upon El-Azar his son; and Aharon shall be gathered unto his people, and shall die there.” 27And Moshe did as יהוה commanded; and they went up into Hor HaHar in the sight of all the assembly. 28And Moshe stripped Aharon of his garments, and put them upon El-Azar his son; and Aharon died there in the top of the mount; and Moshe and El-Azar came down from the mount. 29And when all the assembly saw that Aharon was dead, they wept for Aharon thirty days, even all the house of Yisra’el.
אוַיָּבֹאוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל כָּל הָעֵדָה מִדְבַּר צִן בַּחֹדֶשׁ הָרִאשׁוֹן וַיֵּשֶׁב הָעָם בְּקָדֵשׁ וַתָּמָת שָׁם מִרְיָם וַתִּקָּבֵר שָׁם. בוְלֹא הָיָה מַיִם לָעֵדָה וַיִּקָּהֲלוּ עַל מֹשֶׁה וְעַל אַהֲרֹן. גוַיָּרֶב הָעָם עִם מֹשֶׁה וַיֹּאמְרוּ לֵאמֹר וְלוּ גָוַעְנוּ בִּגְוַע אַחֵינוּ לִפְנֵי יהוה . דוְלָמָה הֲבֵאתֶם אֶת קְהַל יהוה אֶל הַמִּדְבָּר הַזֶּה לָמוּת שָׁם אֲנַחְנוּ וּבְעִירֵנוּ. הוְלָמָה הֶעֱלִיתֻנוּ מִמִּצְרַיִם לְהָבִיא אֹתָנוּ אֶל הַמָּקוֹם הָרָע הַזֶּה לֹא מְקוֹם זֶרַע וּתְאֵנָה וְגֶפֶן וְרִמּוֹן וּמַיִם אַיִן לִשְׁתּוֹת. ווַיָּבֹא מֹשֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן מִפְּנֵי הַקָּהָל אֶל פֶּתַח אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד וַיִּפְּלוּ עַל פְּנֵיהֶם וַיֵּרָא כְבוֹד יהוה אֲלֵיהֶם.
זוַיְדַבֵּר יהוה אֶל מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר, חקַח אֶת הַמַּטֶּה וְהַקְהֵל אֶת הָעֵדָה אַתָּה וְאַהֲרֹן אָחִיךָ וְדִבַּרְתֶּם אֶל הַסֶּלַע לְעֵינֵיהֶם וְנָתַן מֵימָיו וְהוֹצֵאתָ לָהֶם מַיִם מִן הַסֶּלַע וְהִשְׁקִיתָ אֶת הָעֵדָה וְאֶת בְּעִירָם.6
טוַיִּקַּח מֹשֶׁה אֶת הַמַּטֶּה מִלִּפְנֵי יהוה כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּהוּ. יוַיַּקְהִלוּ מֹשֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן אֶת הַקָּהָל אֶל פְּנֵי הַסָּלַע וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם שִׁמְעוּ נָא הַמֹּרִים הֲמִן הַסֶּלַע הַזֶּה נוֹצִיא לָכֶם מָיִם. יאוַיָּרֶם מֹשֶׁה אֶת יָדוֹ וַיַּךְ אֶת הַסֶּלַע בְּמַטֵּהוּ פַּעֲמָיִם וַיֵּצְאוּ מַיִם רַבִּים וַתֵּשְׁתְּ הָעֵדָה וּבְעִירָם.
יבוַיֹּאמֶר יהוה אֶל מֹשֶׁה וְאֶל אַהֲרֹן יַעַן לֹא הֶאֱמַנְתֶּם בִּי לְהַקְדִּישֵׁנִי לְעֵינֵי בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לָכֵן לֹא תָבִיאוּ אֶת הַקָּהָל הַזֶּה אֶל הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר נָתַתִּי לָהֶם.
יגהֵמָּה מֵי מְרִיבָה אֲשֶׁר רָבוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת יהוה וַיִּקָּדֵשׁ בָּם.
ידוַיִּשְׁלַח מֹשֶׁה מַלְאָכִים מִקָּדֵשׁ אֶל מֶלֶךְ אֱדוֹם כֹּה אָמַר אָחִיךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל אַתָּה יָדַעְתָּ אֵת כָּל הַתְּלָאָה אֲשֶׁר מְצָאָתְנוּ. טווַיֵּרְדוּ אֲבֹתֵינוּ מִצְרַיְמָה וַנֵּשֶׁב בְּמִצְרַיִם יָמִים רַבִּים וַיָּרֵעוּ לָנוּ מִצְרַיִם וְלַאֲבֹתֵינוּ. טזוַנִּצְעַק אֶל יהוה וַיִּשְׁמַע קֹלֵנוּ וַיִּשְׁלַח מַלְאָךְ וַיֹּצִאֵנוּ מִמִּצְרָיִם וְהִנֵּה אֲנַחְנוּ בְקָדֵשׁ עִיר קְצֵה גְבוּלֶךָ. יזנַעְבְּרָה נָּא בְאַרְצֶךָ לֹא נַעֲבֹר בְּשָׂדֶה וּבְכֶרֶם וְלֹא נִשְׁתֶּה מֵי בְאֵר דֶּרֶךְ הַמֶּלֶךְ נֵלֵךְ לֹא נִטֶּה יָמִין וּשְׂמֹאול עַד אֲשֶׁר נַעֲבֹר גְּבֻלֶךָ.
יחוַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו אֱדוֹם לֹא תַעֲבֹר בִּי פֶּן בַּחֶרֶב אֵצֵא לִקְרָאתֶךָ. יטוַיֹּאמְרוּ אֵלָיו בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בַּמְסִלָּה נַעֲלֶה וְאִם מֵימֶיךָ נִשְׁתֶּה אֲנִי וּמִקְנַי וְנָתַתִּי מִכְרָם רַק אֵין דָּבָר בְּרַגְלַי אֶעֱבֹרָה. כוַיֹּאמֶר לֹא תַעֲבֹר וַיֵּצֵא אֱדוֹם לִקְרָאתוֹ בְּעַם כָּבֵד וּבְיָד חֲזָקָה. כאוַיְמָאֵן אֱדוֹם נְתֹן אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל עֲבֹר בִּגְבֻלוֹ וַיֵּט יִשְׂרָאֵל מֵעָלָיו.
כבוַיִּסְעוּ מִקָּדֵשׁ וַיָּבֹאוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל כָּל הָעֵדָה הֹר הָהָר. כגוַיֹּאמֶר יהוה אֶל מֹשֶׁה וְאֶל אַהֲרֹן בְּהֹר הָהָר עַל גְּבוּל אֶרֶץ אֱדוֹם לֵאמֹר, כדיֵאָסֵף אַהֲרֹן אֶל עַמָּיו כִּי לֹא יָבֹא אֶל הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר נָתַתִּי לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל עַל אֲשֶׁר מְרִיתֶם אֶת פִּי לְמֵי מְרִיבָה. כהקַח אֶת אַהֲרֹן וְאֶת אֶלְעָזָר בְּנוֹ וְהַעַל אֹתָם הֹר הָהָר. כווְהַפְשֵׁט אֶת אַהֲרֹן אֶת בְּגָדָיו וְהִלְבַּשְׁתָּם אֶת אֶלְעָזָר בְּנוֹ וְאַהֲרֹן יֵאָסֵף וּמֵת שָׁם. כזוַיַּעַשׂ מֹשֶׁה כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יהוה וַיַּעֲלוּ אֶל הֹר הָהָר לְעֵינֵי כָּל הָעֵדָה. כחוַיַּפְשֵׁט מֹשֶׁה אֶת אַהֲרֹן אֶת בְּגָדָיו וַיַּלְבֵּשׁ אֹתָם אֶת אֶלְעָזָר בְּנוֹ וַיָּמָת אַהֲרֹן שָׁם בְּרֹאשׁ הָהָר וַיֵּרֶד מֹשֶׁה וְאֶלְעָזָר מִן הָהָר. כטוַיִּרְאוּ כָּל הָעֵדָה כִּי גָוַע אַהֲרֹן וַיִּבְכּוּ אֶת אַהֲרֹן שְׁלֹשִׁים יוֹם כֹּל בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל.
