1“Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way to Yam Suf, as יהוה spoke unto me; and we encompassed mount Se’ir many days.
2And יהוה spoke unto me, saying, 3‘You have encompassed this mountain long enough; turn northward, 4and command the people, saying, ‘You are to pass through the border of your brethren, the children of Esav that dwell in Se’ir, and they will be afraid of you. Take good heed unto yourselves, therefore. 5Contend not with them, for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on, because I have given mount Se’ir unto Esav for a possession. 6You shall purchase food of them for money, that you may eat; and you shall also buy water of them for money, that you may drink. 7For יהוה your Elohim has blessed you in all the work of your hand; He has known your walking through this great wilderness; these forty years יהוה your Elohim has been with you; you have lacked nothing.” 8So we passed by from our brethren the children of Esav, that dwell in Se’ir, from the way of the Aravah, from Elat and from Etzion Gever.
And we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Mo’av. 9And יהוה said unto me, ‘Be not at enmity with Mo’av, neither contend with them in battle; for I will not give you of his land for a possession; because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession.’ 10The Emim dwelt therein aforetime, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakim; 11these also are accounted Refayim, as the Anakim; but the Moavi call them Emim. 12And in Se’ir dwelt the Khorim aforetime, but the children of Esav succeeded them; and they destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Yisra’el did unto the land of his possession, which יהוה gave unto them. 13‘Now rise up, and get over the brook Zered.’ And we went over the brook Zered. 14And the days in which we came from Kadesh Barne’ah, until we were come over the brook Zered, were thirty-eight years; until all the generation, even the men of war, were consumed from the midst of the camp, as יהוה swore unto them. 15Moreover the hand of יהוה was against them, to discomfit them from the midst of the camp, until they were consumed. 16So it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people, 17that יהוה spoke unto me saying, 18‘You are this day to pass over the border of Mo’av, even Ar; 19and when you come nigh over against the children of Amon, harass them not, nor contend with them; for I will not give you of the land of the children of Amon for a possession; because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession.’ 20That also is accounted a land of Refayim: Refayim dwelt therein aforetime; but the Amoni call them Zamzumim, 21a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakim; but יהוה destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead; 22as He did for the children of Esav, that dwell in Se’ir, when He destroyed the Khorim from before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead even unto this day; 23and the Avim, that dwelt in villages as far as Azatah, the Kaftorim, that came forth out of Kaftor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead. 24‘Rise up, take your journey, and pass over the valley of Arnon; behold, I have given into your hand Sikhon the Amori, king of Kheshbon, and his land; begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle. 25This day will I begin to put the dread of you and the fear of you upon the peoples that are under the whole heaven, who, when they hear the report of you, shall tremble, and be in anguish because of you.’ 26And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemot unto Sikhon king of Kheshbon with words of shalom, saying, 27‘Let me pass through your land; I will go along by the highway, I will neither turn unto the right hand nor to the left. 28You shall sell me food for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink; only let me pass through on my feet; 29as the children of Esav that dwell in Se’ir, and the Moavi that dwell in Ar, did unto me; until I shall pass over the Yarden into the land which יהוה our Elohim gives us.’ 30But Sikhon king of Kheshbon would not let us pass by him; for יהוה your Elohim hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that He might deliver him into your hand, as appears this day. 31And יהוה said unto me, ‘Behold, I have begun to deliver up Sikhon and his land before you; begin to possess his land.’ 32Then Sikhon came out against us, he and all his people, unto battle at Yahaz. 33And יהוה our Elohim delivered him up before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people. 34And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed every city, the men, and the women, and the little ones; we left none remaining; 35only the cattle we took for a prey unto ourselves, with the spoil of the cities which we had taken. 36From Aro’er, which is on the edge of the valley of Arnon, and from the city that is in the valley, even unto Gilad, there was not a city too high for us: יהוה our Elohim delivered up all before us. 37Only to the land of the children of Amon you came not near; all the side of the river Yabok, and the cities of the hill country, and wherever יהוה our Elohim forbade us.”
אוַנֵּפֶן וַנִּסַּע הַמִּדְבָּרָה דֶּרֶךְ יַם סוּף כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר יהוה אֵלָי וַנָּסָב אֶת הַר שֵׂעִיר יָמִים רַבִּים.
בוַיֹּאמֶר יהוה אֵלַי לֵאמֹר, גרַב לָכֶם סֹב אֶת הָהָר הַזֶּה פְּנוּ לָכֶם צָפֹנָה. דוְאֶת הָעָם צַו לֵאמֹר אַתֶּם עֹבְרִים בִּגְבוּל אֲחֵיכֶם בְּנֵי עֵשָׂו הַיֹּשְׁבִים בְּשֵׂעִיר וְיִירְאוּ מִכֶּם וְנִשְׁמַרְתֶּם מְאֹד. האַל תִּתְגָּרוּ בָם כִּי לֹא אֶתֵּן לָכֶם מֵאַרְצָם עַד מִדְרַךְ כַּף רָגֶל כִּי יְרֻשָּׁה לְעֵשָׂו נָתַתִּי אֶת הַר שֵׂעִיר. ואֹכֶל תִּשְׁבְּרוּ מֵאִתָּם בַּכֶּסֶף וַאֲכַלְתֶּם וְגַם מַיִם תִּכְרוּ מֵאִתָּם בַּכֶּסֶף וּשְׁתִיתֶם. זכִּי יהוה אֱלֹהֶיךָ בֵּרַכְךָ בְּכֹל מַעֲשֵׂה יָדֶךָ יָדַע לֶכְתְּךָ אֶת הַמִּדְבָּר הַגָּדֹל הַזֶּה זֶה אַרְבָּעִים שָׁנָה יהוה אֱלֹהֶיךָ עִמָּךְ לֹא חָסַרְתָּ דָּבָר. חוַנַּעֲבֹר מֵאֵת אַחֵינוּ בְנֵי עֵשָׂו הַיֹּשְׁבִים בְּשֵׂעִיר מִדֶּרֶךְ הָעֲרָבָה מֵאֵילַת וּמֵעֶצְיֹן גָּבֶר.
וַנֵּפֶן וַנַּעֲבֹר דֶּרֶךְ מִדְבַּר מוֹאָב. טוַיֹּאמֶר יהוה אֵלַי אַל תָּצַר אֶת מוֹאָב וְאַל תִּתְגָּר בָּם מִלְחָמָה כִּי לֹא אֶתֵּן לְךָ מֵאַרְצוֹ יְרֻשָּׁה כִּי לִבְנֵי לוֹט נָתַתִּי אֶת עָר יְרֻשָּׁה. יהָאֵמִים לְפָנִים יָשְׁבוּ בָהּ עַם גָּדוֹל וְרַב וָרָם כָּעֲנָקִים. יארְפָאִים יֵחָשְׁבוּ אַף הֵם כָּעֲנָקִים וְהַמֹּאָבִים יִקְרְאוּ לָהֶם אֵמִים. יבוּבְשֵׂעִיר יָשְׁבוּ הַחֹרִים לְפָנִים וּבְנֵי עֵשָׂו יִירָשׁוּם וַיַּשְׁמִידוּם מִפְּנֵיהֶם וַיֵּשְׁבוּ תַּחְתָּם כַּאֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה יִשְׂרָאֵל לְאֶרֶץ יְרֻשָּׁתוֹ אֲשֶׁר נָתַן יהוה לָהֶם. יגעַתָּה קֻמוּ וְעִבְרוּ לָכֶם אֶת נַחַל זָרֶד וַנַּעֲבֹר אֶת נַחַל זָרֶד. ידוְהַיָּמִים אֲשֶׁר הָלַכְנוּ מִקָּדֵשׁ בַּרְנֵעַ עַד אֲשֶׁר עָבַרְנוּ אֶת נַחַל זֶרֶד שְׁלֹשִׁים וּשְׁמֹנֶה שָׁנָה עַד תֹּם כָּל הַדּוֹר אַנְשֵׁי הַמִּלְחָמָה מִקֶּרֶב הַמַּחֲנֶה כַּאֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע יהוה לָהֶם. טווְגַם יַד יהוה הָיְתָה בָּם לְהֻמָּם מִקֶּרֶב הַמַּחֲנֶה עַד תֻּמָּם. טזוַיְהִי כַאֲשֶׁר תַּמּוּ כָּל אַנְשֵׁי הַמִּלְחָמָה לָמוּת מִקֶּרֶב הָעָם. יזוַיְדַבֵּר יהוה אֵלַי לֵאמֹר, יחאַתָּה עֹבֵר הַיּוֹם אֶת גְּבוּל מוֹאָב אֶת עָר. יטוְקָרַבְתָּ מוּל בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן אַל תְּצֻרֵם וְאַל תִּתְגָּר בָּם כִּי לֹא אֶתֵּן מֵאֶרֶץ בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן לְךָ יְרֻשָּׁה כִּי לִבְנֵי לוֹט נְתַתִּיהָ יְרֻשָּׁה. כאֶרֶץ רְפָאִים תֵּחָשֵׁב אַף הִוא רְפָאִים יָשְׁבוּ בָהּ לְפָנִים וְהָעַמֹּנִים יִקְרְאוּ לָהֶם זַמְזֻמִּים. כאעַם גָּדוֹל וְרַב וָרָם כָּעֲנָקִים וַיַּשְׁמִידֵם יהוה מִפְּנֵיהֶם וַיִּירָשֻׁם וַיֵּשְׁבוּ תַחְתָּם. כבכַּאֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה לִבְנֵי עֵשָׂו הַיֹּשְׁבִים בְּשֵׂעִיר אֲשֶׁר הִשְׁמִיד אֶת הַחֹרִי מִפְּנֵיהֶם וַיִּירָשֻׁם וַיֵּשְׁבוּ תַחְתָּם עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה. כגוְהָעַוִּים הַיֹּשְׁבִים בַּחֲצֵרִים עַד עַזָּה כַּפְתֹּרִים הַיֹּצְאִים מִכַּפְתֹּר הִשְׁמִידֻם וַיֵּשְׁבוּ תַחְתָּם. כדקוּמוּ סְּעוּ וְעִבְרוּ אֶת נַחַל אַרְנֹן רְאֵה נָתַתִּי בְיָדְךָ אֶת סִיחֹן מֶלֶךְ חֶשְׁבּוֹן הָאֱמֹרִי וְאֶת אַרְצוֹ הָחֵל רָשׁ וְהִתְגָּר בּוֹ מִלְחָמָה. כההַיּוֹם הַזֶּה אָחֵל תֵּת פַּחְדְּךָ וְיִרְאָתְךָ עַל פְּנֵי הָעַמִּים תַּחַת כָּל הַשָּׁמָיִם אֲשֶׁר יִשְׁמְעוּן שִׁמְעֲךָ וְרָגְזוּ וְחָלוּ מִפָּנֶיךָ. כווָאֶשְׁלַח מַלְאָכִים מִמִּדְבַּר קְדֵמוֹת אֶל סִיחוֹן מֶלֶךְ חֶשְׁבּוֹן דִּבְרֵי שָׁלוֹם לֵאמֹר, כזאֶעְבְּרָה בְאַרְצֶךָ בַּדֶּרֶךְ בַּדֶּרֶךְ אֵלֵךְ לֹא אָסוּר יָמִין וּשְׂמֹאול. כחאֹכֶל בַּכֶּסֶף תַּשְׁבִּרֵנִי וְאָכַלְתִּי וּמַיִם בַּכֶּסֶף תִּתֶּן לִי וְשָׁתִיתִי רַק אֶעְבְּרָה בְרַגְלָי. כטכַּאֲשֶׁר עָשׂוּ לִי בְּנֵי עֵשָׂו הַיֹּשְׁבִים בְּשֵׂעִיר וְהַמּוֹאָבִים הַיֹּשְׁבִים בְּעָר עַד אֲשֶׁר אֶעֱבֹר אֶת הַיַּרְדֵּן אֶל הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר יהוה אֱלֹהֵינוּ נֹתֵן לָנוּ. לוְלֹא אָבָה סִיחֹן מֶלֶךְ חֶשְׁבּוֹן הַעֲבִרֵנוּ בּוֹ כִּי הִקְשָׁה יהוה אֱלֹהֶיךָ אֶת רוּחוֹ וְאִמֵּץ אֶת לְבָבוֹ לְמַעַן תִּתּוֹ בְיָדְךָ כַּיּוֹם הַזֶּה. לאוַיֹּאמֶר יהוה אֵלַי רְאֵה הַחִלֹּתִי תֵּת לְפָנֶיךָ אֶת סִיחֹן וְאֶת אַרְצוֹ הָחֵל רָשׁ לָרֶשֶׁת אֶת אַרְצוֹ. לבוַיֵּצֵא סִיחֹן לִקְרָאתֵנוּ הוּא וְכָל עַמּוֹ לַמִּלְחָמָה יָהְצָה. לגוַיִּתְּנֵהוּ יהוה אֱלֹהֵינוּ לְפָנֵינוּ וַנַּךְ אֹתוֹ וְאֶת בָּנָו וְאֶת כָּל עַמּוֹ. לדוַנִּלְכֹּד אֶת כָּל עָרָיו בָּעֵת הַהִוא וַנַּחֲרֵם אֶת כָּל עִיר מְתִם וְהַנָּשִׁים וְהַטָּף לֹא הִשְׁאַרְנוּ שָׂרִיד. להרַק הַבְּהֵמָה בָּזַזְנוּ לָנוּ וּשְׁלַל הֶעָרִים אֲשֶׁר לָכָדְנוּ. לומֵעֲרֹעֵר אֲשֶׁר עַל שְׂפַת נַחַל אַרְנֹן וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר בַּנַּחַל וְעַד הַגִּלְעָד לֹא הָיְתָה קִרְיָה אֲשֶׁר שָׂגְבָה מִמֶּנּוּ אֶת הַכֹּל נָתַן יהוה אֱלֹהֵינוּ לְפָנֵינוּ. לזרַק אֶל אֶרֶץ בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן לֹא קָרָבְתָּ כָּל יַד נַחַל יַבֹּק וְעָרֵי הָהָר וְכֹל אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יהוה אֱלֹהֵינוּ.
