1After these things the D’var יהוה came unto Avram in a vision, saying, “Fear not, Avram, I am your shield, your very great reward.” 2And Avram said, “O Adonai יהוה , what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and he that shall be possessor of my house is Eli’ezer of Damesek?” 3And Avram said, “Behold, to me You have given no seed, and, lo, one born in my house is to be my heir.” 4And, behold, the D’var יהוה came unto him, saying, “This man shall not be your heir; but he that shall come forth out of your own bowels shall be your heir.” 5And He brought him forth abroad, and said, “Look now toward heaven, and count the stars, if you are able to count them”; and He said unto him, “So shall your seed be.” 6And he trusted firmly in יהוה ; and He counted it to him for tzedaka. 7And He said unto him, “I am יהוה that brought you out of Ur of the Kasdim, to give you this land to inherit it.” 8And he said, “O Adonai יהוה , how shall I know that I shall inherit it?” 9And He said unto him, “Take Me a heifer of three years old, and a she-goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtle-dove, and a young pigeon.” 10And he took him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each half over against the other; but the birds he did not divide. 11And the birds of prey came down upon the carcasses, and Avram drove them away. 12And it came to pass, that, when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Avram; and, lo, a dread, even a great darkness, fell upon him. 13And He said unto Avram, “Know of a surety that your seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years; 14and also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge; and afterward shall they come out with great substance. 15But you shall go to your fathers in shalom; you shall be buried in a good old age. 16And in the fourth generation they shall come back here; for the iniquity of the Amori is not yet full.” 17And it came to pass that, when the sun went down, and there was thick darkness, behold, a smoking furnace, and a flaming torch that passed between these pieces. 18In that day יהוה made a Brit with Avram, saying, “Unto Your seed have I given this land, from the river of Mitzrayim unto the great river, the river Perat; 19the Keni, and the Kenizi, and the Kadmoni, 20and the Khiti, and the Perizi, and the Refayim, 21and the Amori, and the Kena’ani, and the Girgashi, and the Yevusi.”
אאַחַר הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה הָיָה דְבַר יהוה אֶל אַבְרָם בַּמַּחֲזֶה לֵאמֹר אַל תִּירָא אַבְרָם אָנֹכִי מָגֵן לָךְ שְׂכָרְךָ הַרְבֵּה מְאֹד. בוַיֹּאמֶר אַבְרָם אֲדֹנָי יהוה מַה תִּתֶּן לִי וְאָנֹכִי הוֹלֵךְ עֲרִירִי וּבֶן מֶשֶׁק בֵּיתִי הוּא דַּמֶּשֶׂק אֱלִיעֶזֶר. גוַיֹּאמֶר אַבְרָם הֵן לִי לֹא נָתַתָּה זָרַע וְהִנֵּה בֶן בֵּיתִי יוֹרֵשׁ אֹתִי. דוְהִנֵּה דְבַר יהוה אֵלָיו לֵאמֹר לֹא יִירָשְׁךָ זֶה כִּי אִם אֲשֶׁר יֵצֵא מִמֵּעֶיךָ הוּא יִירָשֶׁךָ. הוַיּוֹצֵא אֹתוֹ הַחוּצָה וַיֹּאמֶר הַבֶּט נָא הַשָּׁמַיְמָה וּסְפֹר הַכּוֹכָבִים אִם תּוּכַל לִסְפֹּר אֹתָם וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ כֹּה יִהְיֶה זַרְעֶךָ. ווְהֶאֱמִן בַּיהוה וַיַּחְשְׁבֶהָ לּוֹ צְדָקָה. זוַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו אֲנִי יהוה אֲשֶׁר הוֹצֵאתִיךָ מֵאוּר כַּשְׂדִּים לָתֶת לְךָ אֶת הָאָרֶץ הַזֹּאת לְרִשְׁתָּהּ. חוַיֹּאמַר אֲדֹנָי יהוה בַּמָּה אֵדַע כִּי אִירָשֶׁנָּה. טוַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו קְחָה לִי עֶגְלָה מְשֻׁלֶּשֶׁת וְעֵז מְשֻׁלֶּשֶׁת וְאַיִל מְשֻׁלָּשׁ וְתֹר וְגוֹזָל. יוַיִּקַּח לוֹ אֶת כָּל אֵלֶּה וַיְבַתֵּר אֹתָם בַּתָּוֶךְ וַיִּתֵּן אִישׁ בִּתְרוֹ לִקְרַאת רֵעֵהוּ וְאֶת הַצִּפֹּר לֹא בָתָר. יאוַיֵּרֶד הָעַיִט עַל הַפְּגָרִים וַיַּשֵּׁב אֹתָם אַבְרָם. יבוַיְהִי הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ לָבוֹא וְתַרְדֵּמָה נָפְלָה עַל אַבְרָם וְהִנֵּה אֵימָה חֲשֵׁכָה גְדֹלָה נֹפֶלֶת עָלָיו. יגוַיֹּאמֶר לְאַבְרָם יָדֹעַ תֵּדַע כִּי גֵר יִהְיֶה זַרְעֲךָ בְּאֶרֶץ לֹא לָהֶם וַעֲבָדוּם וְעִנּוּ אֹתָם אַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת שָׁנָה. ידוְגַם אֶת הַגּוֹי אֲשֶׁר יַעֲבֹדוּ דָּן אָנֹכִי וְאַחֲרֵי כֵן יֵצְאוּ בִּרְכֻשׁ גָּדוֹל. טווְאַתָּה תָּבוֹא אֶל אֲבֹתֶיךָ בְּשָׁלוֹם תִּקָּבֵר בְּשֵׂיבָה טוֹבָה. טזוְדוֹר רְבִיעִי יָשׁוּבוּ הֵנָּה כִּי לֹא שָׁלֵם עֲוֹן הָאֱמֹרִי עַד הֵנָּה. יזוַיְהִי הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ בָּאָה וַעֲלָטָה הָיָה וְהִנֵּה תַנּוּר עָשָׁן וְלַפִּיד אֵשׁ אֲשֶׁר עָבַר בֵּין הַגְּזָרִים הָאֵלֶּה. יחבַּיּוֹם הַהוּא כָּרַת יהוה אֶת אַבְרָם בְּרִית לֵאמֹר לְזַרְעֲךָ נָתַתִּי אֶת הָאָרֶץ הַזֹּאת מִנְּהַר מִצְרַיִם עַד הַנָּהָר הַגָּדֹל נְהַר פְּרָת. יטאֶת הַקֵּינִי וְאֶת הַקְּנִזִּי וְאֵת הַקַּדְמֹנִי. כוְאֶת הַחִתִּי וְאֶת הַפְּרִזִּי וְאֶת הָרְפָאִים. כאוְאֶת הָאֱמֹרִי וְאֶת הַכְּנַעֲנִי וְאֶת הַגִּרְגָּשִׁי וְאֶת הַיְבוּסִי.
