B’reshit 25 – ברשית כה

t.o.c.

1And Avraham took another wife, and her name was Keturah. 2And she bore him Zimran, and Yokshan, and Medan, and MidYan, and Ishbak, and Shu’ah. 3And Yokshan begot Sheba, and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Ashurim, and Letushim, and Leummim. 4And the sons of MidYan: Efah, and Efer, and Khanokh, and Avida, and Elda’ah. All these were the children of Keturah. 5And Avraham gave all that he had unto Yitz’khak. 6But unto the sons of the concubines that Avraham had, Avraham gave gifts; and he sent them away from Yitz’khak his son, while he yet lived, eastward, unto the east country. 7And these are the days of the years of Avraham’s life which he lived, a hundred and seventy-five years. 8And Avraham expired, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people. 9And Yitz’khak and Yishma’el his sons buried him in the cave of Makhpelah, in the field of Efron Ben Tzokhar the Khiti, which is before Mamre; 10the field which Avraham purchased of the children of Khet; there was Avraham buried, and Sarah his wife. 11And it came to pass after the death of Avraham, that Elohim blessed Yitz’khak his son; and Yitz’khak dwelt by Be’er-lakhai-ro’i.

12Now these are the generations of Yishma’el, Avraham’s son, whom Hagar the Mitzrit, Sarah’s handmaid, bore unto Avraham. 13And these are the names of the sons of Yishma’el, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Yishma’el, Nevayot; and Kedar, and Adbe’el, and Mivsam, 14and Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa; 15Khadad, and Tema, Yetur, Nafish, and Kedem; 16these are the sons of Yishma’el, and these are their names, by their villages, and by their encampments; twelve princes according to their nations. 17And these are the years of the life of Yishma’el, a hundred and thirty-seven years; and he expired and died; and was gathered unto his people. 18And they dwelt from Khavilah unto Shur that is before Mitzrayim, as you go toward Ashur: over against all his brethren he did settle.

Parashat Toldot

19And these are the generations of Yitz’khak, Avraham’s son: Avraham begot Yitz’khak. 20And Yitz’khak was forty years old when he took Rivkah, the daughter of Betu’el the Arami, of Padan Aram, the sister of Lavan the Arami, to be his wife. 21And Yitz’khak entreated  יהוה  for his wife, because she was barren; and  יהוה  let Himself be entreated of him, and Rivkah his wife conceived. 22And the children struggled together within her; and she said, “If it is so, why do I live?” And she went to inquire of  יהוה . And23  יהוה  said unto her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples shall be separated from your bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.” 24And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb. 25And the first came forth ruddy, all over like a hairy mantle; and they called his name Esav. 26And after that came forth his brother, and his hand had hold on Esav’s heel; and his name was called Ya’akov. And Yitz’khak was sixty years old when she bore them. 27And the boys grew; and Esav was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Ya’akov was a quiet man, dwelling in tents. 28Now Yitz’khak loved Esav, because he did eat of his venison; and Rivkah loved Ya’akov. 29And Ya’akov boiled pottage; and Esav came in from the field, and he was faint. 30And Esav said to Ya’akov, “Let me eat, I pray, some of this red, red pottage; for I am faint.” Therefore was his name called Edom. 31And Ya’akov said, “Sell me first your birthright.” 32And Esav said, “Behold, I am at the point to die; and what profit shall the birthright do to me?” 33And Ya’akov said, “Swear to me first;” and he swore unto him; and he sold his birthright unto Ya’akov. 34And Ya’akov gave Esav bread and pottage of lentils; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way. So Esav despised his birthright.
