“All power in Heaven and on earth has been given to me. Just as Avi has sent me, I am also sending you. Go, therefore, and make talmidim of all nations, and immerse them in the Name of HaAv, and HaBen and Ru’akh HaKodesh, and teach them to obey everything that I have commanded you; and behold, I am with you every day, to the end of the age.”
Years ago, on my second ‘post-Navy’ job, I was working with a bunch of former military guys, and doing my best to live the life of Messiah before them, and to declare His Good News when I was given the opportunity, or told to. One time I was really ‘told’ to, commanded to, and I did so reluctantly, as I was not very fond of the person; he was a miserable cuss, and I was certain he would just reject everything I said. But, I managed to obey somehow.
On that job, three or four of us started meeting during our brief lunch hour to read scriptures together and pray. An older man joined us, who were all in our twenties. He was a former missionary. After just a few days of meeting with us, he began to function as a recruiter, trying to convince all of us to become missionaries. He used the verse cited above to justify his logic that we needed to go to third-world countries and declare the good news to them. I kept insisting that this was not applicable to everyone who hears these verses! “Make disciples of ALL NATIONS, it says; is America NOT in that roll of nations?” Most of the young men agreed with me, as our desire was to declare his truth to the thirty or so men we worked with. I wish I had time to tell of all the things Yeshua did in our midst in the short time I worked there!
A few years later, after marrying the girl I was dating at the time, and after having lived in Kirbyville and then moving to Houston, I was frustrated more and more with the realm of christians and their thought processes and behaviors. I had been called Satan simply for observing the Sabbath privately in our home, by ‘christians’ with whom I assembled on sun-day, as there was no Sabbath-keeping congregation with sound doctrine near us. Their duplicity and apparent inability to read the plain meaning of scripture frustrated me. Their lack of real character caused my wife and I to ‘bow out gracefully’ from places of leadership, and begin a time of prayer to ask Abba to create in our lives HIS Congregation as HE would have it.
During that time, a friend from Kirbyville called. I was relating to him my frustrations, and he asked me, “what are you going to do, Daniel?” “I’m going to MAKE BROTHERS to fellowship with.” “Now you’re talking like your Father,” he said. In spite of his lack of knowledge of truth and rejection of it, he prophesied nonetheless.
Shortly thereafter, three lost men asked me to teach them scripture, and ten years later, ten years ago now, our Congregation was ‘birthed’, or budded forth from the root that Messiah planted twenty years ago.
So many romanticize about ‘becoming a missionary’, thinking that they must travel abroad at the expense of the ‘church’ in order to bring His Good News to lost people. They do not realize how lost Americans are! How HUNGRY all the world is for truth.
Yeshua told us to MAKE Talmidim. A Talmid is a TORAH STUDENT! And He proves it by further saying, “teach them to obey everything that I have commanded you.” This is one of the places where today’s bad logic is betrayed. Theologians and bible teachers/preachers SAY that Yeshua is divine, AS DO WE, [though they elevate him into the very same physical ‘essence’ of His Father, taking away His flesh and bone status as a man, forever], yet AT THE SAME TIME they DENY that the He taught the Mitzvot of His Father: the Torah. In Matti 5-7, he clearly took many of the mitzvot and MADE THEM MORE STRONG than what we [Jews] formerly understood. He said very plainly, “Do not expect that I have come to weaken the Torah or the Nevi’im; I have not come to weaken it, but to expound it. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not even one yod, nor a stroke shall pass away from the Torah until everything comes to pass. Whoever therefore tries to loosen even one of these smallest mitzvot, and teaches men so, he shall be regarded as small in Malkhut HaShamayim; but anyone who observes and teaches them, he shall be regarded as great in Malkhut HaShamayim.”
Yeshua spoke very plainly here, saying basically he came to confirm/explain/expound the words of Torah. Starting in the very next verse, and for two more chapters, He does EXACTLY THAT. Yet ‘scholars’ and teachers today tell us NOT to teach the commandments of Torah. And they tell us NOT to preach to those around us, but go to foreign nations and take up a career in being paid to ‘preach’ to far-distant lost souls. What about our families, neighbors, friends, coworkers and those we mingle among every day in public? Are THEY not among the nations? Are THEY not lost? Are they not in need of a Savior to deliver them from THEIR sin?
Yeshua said it: “Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields which have turned white, and have long been ready for the harvest.”
That was said in ISRAEL, 2,000 years ago!
There is PLENTY to do RIGHT WHERE WE SIT.
And there are PLENTY who may know who Messiah is, but they do not know HOW to walk His walk. And they are hungry for meat, and being fed nothing but sugar, becoming malnourished and desperate for attention, and hence following EVERY wind of doctrine, and seeking out someone to scratch their itching ears and tell them they are okay ‘in christ’.
BE a talmid. MAKE Talmidim. It’s EASY to do overseas, where people are in despair. The HARDEST work of the kingdom is done here, in time of great prosperity, and ease, and amidst all manner of deceit and error.
I was SO pleased to hear a year or so after I left that job where that ‘missionary’ was so bent on sending us away, that the ‘miserable cuss’ to whom I had declared the Good News of Messiah had turned himself. It was revealed to me during our conversation, by the Ru’akh, that he was a homosexual. He came out to our coworkers while we were working in New Orleans, and I still only said ‘hi’ to him every day. And the believers prayed. I called one of those coworkers a year later, and the first thing he told me was that this ‘cuss’ had put his trust in Messiah Yeshua, and had been delivered of his lifestyle, and was a completely different, and HAPPY man. You NEVER KNOW what your presence is doing, and your meager declaration, WHERE YOU ARE! Trust in the SIMPLE declaration of HIS TRUTH. He IS with you. If you trust.
