Have you ever been to a Passover Seder? If you are in or could plan to be in our area this year, we would LOVE to invite you to our Seder. Here is why:
Yeshua is the WHOLE REASON we do this. We so desperately want to share our Savior with the whole world. And, for those who already know Him as “Jesus,” since we live in America, we want you to know Him better by understanding more deeply what He did on the night of Pesakh, or “Passover”, almost 2,000 years ago.
We just finished reading about Passover in our annual reading cycle called “Parashot”. Every year at this time we re-read the Passover story from the Torah in our Synagogues. This always gets our hearts to thinking about the fact that Pesakh is coming up, and that we need to begin to prepare for our Seder.
Our preparation begins with SPIRITUAL preparation. This is not just a ‘feast’, not just a meal, and not just a celebration. This is what most institutional religions replaced with ‘communion’ or the ‘eucharist’, depending on one’s denomination.
This event should NEVER have been replaced!
This NIGHT is different from ALL OTHER NIGHTS, because our Master, Yeshua, the SON OF GOD, took a cup of wine, and He instituted the “Brit “Khadashah”. He RENEWED the Covenant of God with the JEWISH PEOPLE that night. Those TWELVE MEN with Him, who took that cup from Him and drank from it with Him, were all JEWS. He Himself is a Jew. He was fulfilling the prophecy of Jeremiah 31:30-33 :
30Behold, the days come, says יהוה , that I will make a Brit Khadashah [Renewed Covenant] with The House of Yisra’el, and with The House of Yehudah; 31not according to the Covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; forasmuch as they broke My Covenant, although I was a husband to them, says יהוה . But32 this is the Covenant that I will make with The House of Yisra’el after those days, says יהוה , I will put My Torah in their inward parts, and in their heart will I write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people; 33and they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know יהוה ‘; for they shall all know Me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, says יהוה ; for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin will I remember no more‘.
He would shed His physical blood the next day; but His WORDS that night gave us the format for partaking of His blood TOGETHER, as ONE BODY.
It is AMAZING how very similar the “Order” of the Passover in Jewish homes is to the “order”, or “Seder”, that Yeshua followed. In every Jewish home, the ‘third cup’ is the “cup after supper”. The attendants already drank together from their cups twice, ceremonially. But, after they have eaten the Passover meal, the cup is filled again, and the ‘third cup’, called in ancient and modern Judaism the “Cup of Redemption”, is taken AFTER supper:
19And He took bread and gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them and said, “This is my body, which is given for your sake; this do in remembrance of me.” 20And likewise also He took the cup, after they had eaten supper, and He said, “This is the cup of the Brit Khadashah in my blood, which is shed for you.”
“This do” is in direct reference to the THIRD CUP OF THE PASSOVER SEDER. We commemorate this every week on Erev Shabbat, Sabbath evening on Friday evening, when we have a “mini Passover”, having the same elements of the Seder with our Sabbath meal. And we in the Messianic Peshitta community take it very seriously, as the commemoration of the cup of His blood that was shed for each of us, so that we could be FREE from our sins, free from every major or minor violation of His Torah, utterly.
We do this meal together each year, as a REMINDER of the whole Body of Messiah. And it is time to begin to pray in preparation for that. Sha’ul was preparing the Corinthian congregation for just such a mindset for the Passover. In 1st Corinthians 5 he indicates he is discussing Passover:
7Clean out, therefore, the old leaven, so that you may be a new lump, so that you can be matzot [unleavened bread] . For our Pesakh [Passover Lamb] is Messiah, who was sacrificed for our sake. 8Therefore let us celebrate the Khag, not with old leavening, neither with the leavening of evil and bitterness, but with the leavening of purity and k’dushah.
A “Khag” is a pilgrim feast. Sha’ul was speaking particularly about the Passover feast. He explained that Messiah IS our Lamb. He explained that we need to check ourselves in preparation for it. He returns to this theme in the 11th chapter:
23For I myself received from Adoneinu [Our Master] that which I also delivered to you, that Adoneinu Yeshua on that very night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My Body, which is broken for you; this do in remembrance of Me.” 25Likewise after supper, He gave also the cup and said, “This cup is the Brit Khadashah in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” 26For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you commemorate Adoneinu’s death until His coming. 27Therefore whoever shall eat of the bread of יהוה and drink of His cup unworthily shall be guilty of the blood and body of יהוה . For28 this reason, let a man examine himself and eat of this bread and drink of this cup. 29For he who eats and drinks unworthily eats and drinks to his condemnation; for he does not discern the Body of יהוה . This30 is the reason many are sick and weak among you, and many are dying. 31For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged. 32But when we are judged by Adoneinu, we are surely chastened, so that we may not be condemned with the world.
The ‘unworthy manner’ is explained in the previous AND following verses, and can be summed up by saying that people were making light of the sanctity of the MEAL, treating it merely as a meal, and not as a commemoration of Yeshua’s death that we participate in TOGETHER. The were not discerning that His Body is the PEOPLE who partake of that bread and that wine! NOT the elements themselves: THE PEOPLE. His LIVING BODY.
If you have never ‘seen’ an authentic, Hebrew, Jewish Passover Seder, I happily invite you to consider joining us during ours. We offer this for people who are looking into the Son of God, to ‘see’ whether He is someone they want to consider following. And for people who simply what to experience how Yeshua would have conducted His Seder. We REJOICE that several people have received SALVATION at our Passover Seders. Several have been healed, physically and emotionally. And MANY have been RESTORED to a closeness to Yeshua their Savior. Our little congregation is already praying mightily that this year be different, only in having an even greater intimacy with HIM, and in the number of eternal miracles that He does through our being obedient to him. We have begun to pray for every attendee, and hope you reap the benefit of that blessing, which we humbly offer.
Seating will be limited. Our possible dates are: EITHER 03/16, or 04/15. We will know more at the beginning of March, and will post with more certainty then. Put us on your radar! If you are interested, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
