Divrei HaYamim Alef 19 – דברי הימים א פרק יט

t.o.c.

1And it came to pass after this, that Nakhash the king of the children of Amon died, and his son reigned in his stead. 2And David said, “l will show kindness unto Khanun Ben Nakhash, because his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the children of Amon to Khanun, to comfort him. 3But the princes of the children of Amon said to Khanun, “Do you think that David does honor your father, that he has sent comforters unto you? Are not his servants come unto you to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?” 4So Khanun took David’s servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their hips, and sent them away. 5Then there went certain persons, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them; for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, “Tarry at Yerekho until your beards are grown, and then return.”  6And when the children of Amon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Khanun and the children of Amon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Aram Naharayim, and out of Aram Ma’akhah, and out of Tzovah. 7So they hired them thirty-two thousand chariots, and the king of Ma’akhah and his people, who came and encamped before Medeva.  And the children of Amon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.  8And when David heard of it, he sent Yo’av, and all the host of the mighty men. 9And the children of Amon came out and put the battle in array at the gate of the city; and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field. 10Now when Yo’av saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Yisra’el, and put them in array against Aram. 11And the rest of the people he committed into the hand of Avishai his brother, and they put themselves in array against the children of Amon. 12And he said, “If Aram is too strong for me, then you shall help me;  but if the children of Amon are too strong for you, then I will help you. 13Be of good courage, and let us prove strong for our people,  and for the cities of our Elohim;  and may  יהוה  do  that  which seems good to  Him.” 14So Yo’av and the people that were with him drew nigh unto the battle to meet Aram; and they fled before him. 15And when the children of Amon saw that Aram had fled, they likewise fled before Avishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Yo’av came to Yerushalayim.  16And when Aram saw that they were put to the worse before Yisra’el, they sent messengers, and brought out Aram that was beyond the River, with Shofakh the captain of the host of Hadadezer at their head. 17And it was told David; and he gathered all Yisra’el together, and passed over the Yarden, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against Aram, they fought with him. 18And Aram fled before Yisra’el; and David slew of Aram the men of seven thousand chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shofakh the captain of the host. 19And when the servants of Hadadezer saw that they were put to the worse before Yisra’el, they made peace with David, and served him; neither would Aram help the children of Amon any more.
