1And Satan stood up against Yisra’el, and moved David to number Yisra’el. 2And David said to Yo’av and to the princes of the people, “Go, number Yisra’el from Be’er Shava even to Dan; and bring me word, that I may know the sum of them.” 3And Yo’av said, ” יהוה make His people a hundred times so many more as they are; but, my Adon HaMelekh, are they not all my Adon’s servants? Why does my Adon require this thing? Why will he be a cause of guilt unto Yisra’el?” 4Nevertheless HaMelekh’s word prevailed against Yo’av. Therefore Yo’av departed and went throughout all Yisra’el, and came to Yerushalayim. 5And Yo’av gave up the sum of the numbering of the people unto David. And all they of Yisra’el were a thousand thousand and a hundred thousand men that drew sword; and Yehudah was four hundred and seventy thousand men that drew sword. 6But Levi and Binyamin he did not number among them; for the Melekh’s word was abominable to Yo’av. 7And Elohim was displeased with this thing; therefore He smote Yisra’el. 8And David said unto Elohim, “I have sinned greatly, in that I have done this thing; but now, put away, I beseech You, the iniquity of Your servant; for I have done very foolishly.”
9And יהוה spoke unto Gad, David’s Khozeh, saying, 10“Go and speak unto David, saying, ‘Thus says יהוה , ‘I offer you three things; choose one of them, that I may do it unto you’.” 11So Gad came to David, and said unto him, “Thus says יהוה , ‘Take which you will, 12either three years of famine; or three months to be swept away before your foes, while the sword of your enemies overtakes you; or else three days the sword of יהוה , even pestilence in the land, and the Malakh יהוה destroying throughout all the borders of Yisra’el.’ Now therefore consider what answer I shall return to Him that sent me.” 13And David said unto Gad, “I am in a great strait; let me fall now into the hand of יהוה , for very great are His mercies; and let me not fall into the hand of man.” 14So יהוה sent a pestilence upon Yisra’el; and there fell of Yisra’el seventy thousand men. 15And Elohim sent a Malakh unto Yerushalayim to destroy it; and as he was about to destroy, יהוה beheld, and He relented Him of the evil, and said to the destroying Malakh, “It is enough; now stay your hand.” And the Malakh יהוה was standing by the threshing-floor of Ornan the Yevusi. 16And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the Malakh יהוה standing between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Yerushalayim. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces. 17And David said unto Elohim, “Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? Even I it is that have sinned and done very wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? Let Your hand, I pray, O יהוה my Elohim, be against me, and against my father’s house; but not against Your people, that they should be plagued.” 18Then the Malakh יהוה commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up and rear a Mizbe’akh unto יהוה in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Yevusi. 19And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spoke in the Name of יהוה . And20 Ornan turned back, and saw the Malakh; and his four sons that were with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat. 21And as David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshing-floor, and bowed down to David with his face to the ground. 22Then David said to Ornan, “Give me the place of this threshing-floor, that I may build thereon a Mizbe’akh unto יהוה ; for the full price shall you give it to me, that the plague may be stayed from the people.” 23And Ornan said unto David, “Take it to you, and let my Adon HaMelekh do that which is good in his eyes; lo, I give you the oxen for Olot, and the threshing-instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meal-offering; I give it all.” 24And Melekh David said to Ornan, “Nay, but I will surely buy it for the full price; for I will not take that which is yours for יהוה , nor offer an Olah without cost.” 25So David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight. 26And David built there a Mizbe’akh unto יהוה , and offered Olot and Sh’lamim, and called upon יהוה ; and He answered him from heaven by fire upon the Mizbe’akh HaOlah. 27And יהוה commanded the Malakh; and he put up his sword back into the sheath thereof. 28At that time, when David saw that יהוה had answered him in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Yevusi, then he sacrificed there. 29For the Mishkan יהוה , which Moshe made in the wilderness, and the Mizbe’akh HaOlah, were at that time in the high place at Givon. 30But David could not go before it to inquire of Elohim; for he was terrified because of the sword of the Malakh יהוה .
אוַיַּעֲמֹד שָׂטָן עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיָּסֶת אֶת דָּוִיד לִמְנוֹת אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל. בוַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִיד אֶל יוֹאָב וְאֶל שָׂרֵי הָעָם לְכוּ סִפְרוּ אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל מִבְּאֵר שֶׁבַע וְעַד דָּן; וְהָבִיאוּ אֵלַי וְאֵדְעָה אֶת מִסְפָּרָם. גוַיֹּאמֶר יוֹאָב יוֹסֵף יהוה עַל עַמּוֹ כָּהֵם מֵאָה פְעָמִים הֲלֹא אֲדֹנִי הַמֶּלֶךְ כֻּלָּם לַאדֹנִי לַעֲבָדִים; לָמָּה יְבַקֵּשׁ זֹאת אֲדֹנִי לָמָּה יִהְיֶה לְאַשְׁמָה לְיִשְׂרָאֵל. דוּדְבַר הַמֶּלֶךְ חָזַק עַל יוֹאָב; וַיֵּצֵא יוֹאָב וַיִּתְהַלֵּךְ בְּכָל יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיָּבֹא יְרוּשָׁלִָם. הוַיִּתֵּן יוֹאָב אֶת מִסְפַּר מִפְקַד הָעָם אֶל דָּוִיד; וַיְהִי כָל יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶלֶף אֲלָפִים וּמֵאָה אֶלֶף אִישׁ שֹׁלֵף חֶרֶב וִיהוּדָה אַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת וְשִׁבְעִים אֶלֶף אִישׁ שֹׁלֵף חָרֶב. ווְלֵוִי וּבִנְיָמִן לֹא פָקַד בְּתוֹכָם: כִּי נִתְעַב דְּבַר הַמֶּלֶךְ אֶת יוֹאָב. זוַיֵּרַע בְּעֵינֵי הָאֱלֹהִים עַל הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה; וַיַּךְ אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל. חוַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִיד אֶל הָאֱלֹהִים חָטָאתִי מְאֹד אֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתִי אֶת הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה; וְעַתָּה הַעֲבֶר נָא אֶת עֲווֹן עַבְדְּךָ כִּי נִסְכַּלְתִּי מְאֹד.
טוַיְדַבֵּר יהוה אֶל גָּד חֹזֵה דָוִיד לֵאמֹר, ילֵךְ וְדִבַּרְתָּ אֶל דָּוִיד לֵאמֹר כֹּה אָמַר יהוה שָׁלוֹשׁ אֲנִי נֹטֶה עָלֶיךָ: בְּחַר לְךָ אַחַת מֵהֵנָּה וְאֶעֱשֶׂה לָּךְ. יאוַיָּבֹא גָד אֶל דָּוִיד; וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ כֹּה אָמַר יהוה קַבֶּל לָךְ. יבאִם שָׁלוֹשׁ שָׁנִים רָעָב וְאִם שְׁלֹשָׁה חֳדָשִׁים נִסְפֶּה מִפְּנֵי צָרֶיךָ וְחֶרֶב אוֹיְבֶיךָ לְמַשֶּׂגֶת וְאִם שְׁלֹשֶׁת יָמִים חֶרֶב יהוה וְדֶבֶר בָּאָרֶץ וּמַלְאַךְ יהוה מַשְׁחִית בְּכָל גְּבוּל יִשְׂרָאֵל: וְעַתָּה רְאֵה מָה אָשִׁיב אֶת שֹׁלְחִי דָּבָר. יגוַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִיד אֶל גָּד צַר לִי מְאֹד; אֶפְּלָה נָּא בְיַד יהוה כִּי רַבִּים רַחֲמָיו מְאֹד וּבְיַד אָדָם אַל אֶפֹּל. ידוַיִּתֵּן יהוה דֶּבֶר בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיִּפֹּל מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל שִׁבְעִים אֶלֶף אִישׁ. טווַיִּשְׁלַח הָאֱלֹהִים מַלְאָךְ לִירוּשָׁלִַם לְהַשְׁחִיתָהּ וּכְהַשְׁחִית רָאָה יהוה וַיִּנָּחֶם עַל הָרָעָה וַיֹּאמֶר לַמַּלְאָךְ הַמַּשְׁחִית רַב עַתָּה הֶרֶף יָדֶךָ; וּמַלְאַךְ יהוה עֹמֵד עִם גֹּרֶן אָרְנָן הַיְבוּסִי. טזוַיִּשָּׂא דָוִיד אֶת עֵינָיו וַיַּרְא אֶת מַלְאַךְ יהוה עֹמֵד בֵּין הָאָרֶץ וּבֵין הַשָּׁמַיִם וְחַרְבּוֹ שְׁלוּפָה בְּיָדוֹ נְטוּיָה עַל יְרוּשָׁלִָם; וַיִּפֹּל דָּוִיד וְהַזְּקֵנִים מְכֻסִּים בַּשַּׂקִּים עַל פְּנֵיהֶם. יזוַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִיד אֶל הָאֱלֹהִים הֲלֹא אֲנִי אָמַרְתִּי לִמְנוֹת בָּעָם וַאֲנִי הוּא אֲשֶׁר חָטָאתִי וְהָרֵעַ הֲרֵעוֹתִי וְאֵלֶּה הַצֹּאן מֶה עָשׂוּ; יהוה אֱלֹהַי תְּהִי נָא יָדְךָ בִּי וּבְבֵית אָבִי וּבְעַמְּךָ לֹא לְמַגֵּפָה. יחוּמַלְאַךְ יהוה אָמַר אֶל גָּד לֵאמֹר לְדָוִיד: כִּי יַעֲלֶה דָוִיד לְהָקִים מִזְבֵּחַ לַיהוה בְּגֹרֶן אָרְנָן הַיְבֻסִי. יטוַיַּעַל דָּוִיד בִּדְבַר גָּד אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר בְּשֵׁם יהוה . כוַיָּשָׁב אָרְנָן וַיַּרְא אֶת הַמַּלְאָךְ וְאַרְבַּעַת בָּנָיו עִמּוֹ מִתְחַבְּאִים; וְאָרְנָן דָּשׁ חִטִּים. כאוַיָּבֹא דָוִיד עַד אָרְנָן; וַיַּבֵּט אָרְנָן וַיַּרְא אֶת דָּוִיד וַיֵּצֵא מִן הַגֹּרֶן וַיִּשְׁתַּחוּ לְדָוִיד אַפַּיִם אָרְצָה. כבוַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִיד אֶל אָרְנָן תְּנָה לִּי מְקוֹם הַגֹּרֶן וְאֶבְנֶה בּוֹ מִזְבֵּחַ לַיהוה ; בְּכֶסֶף מָלֵא תְּנֵהוּ לִי וְתֵעָצַר הַמַּגֵּפָה מֵעַל הָעָם. כגוַיֹּאמֶר אָרְנָן אֶל דָּוִיד קַח לָךְ וְיַעַשׂ אֲדֹנִי הַמֶּלֶךְ הַטּוֹב בְּעֵינָיו; רְאֵה נָתַתִּי הַבָּקָר לָעֹלוֹת וְהַמּוֹרִגִּים לָעֵצִים וְהַחִטִּים לַמִּנְחָה הַכֹּל נָתָתִּי. כדוַיֹּאמֶר הַמֶּלֶךְ דָּוִיד לְאָרְנָן לֹא כִּי קָנֹה אֶקְנֶה בְּכֶסֶף מָלֵא: כִּי לֹא אֶשָּׂא אֲשֶׁר לְךָ לַיהוה וְהַעֲלוֹת עוֹלָה חִנָּם. כהוַיִּתֵּן דָּוִיד לְאָרְנָן בַּמָּקוֹם שִׁקְלֵי זָהָב מִשְׁקָל שֵׁשׁ מֵאוֹת. כווַיִּבֶן שָׁם דָּוִיד מִזְבֵּחַ לַיהוה וַיַּעַל עֹלוֹת וּשְׁלָמִים; וַיִּקְרָא אֶל יהוה וַיַּעֲנֵהוּ בָאֵשׁ מִן הַשָּׁמַיִם עַל מִזְבַּח הָעֹלָה. כזוַיֹּאמֶר יהוה לַמַּלְאָךְ וַיָּשֶׁב חַרְבּוֹ אֶל נְדָנָהּ. כחבָּעֵת הַהִיא בִּרְאוֹת דָּוִיד כִּי עָנָהוּ יהוה בְּגֹרֶן אָרְנָן הַיְבוּסִי; וַיִּזְבַּח שָׁם. כטוּמִשְׁכַּן יהוה אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה מֹשֶׁה בַמִּדְבָּר וּמִזְבַּח הָעוֹלָה בָּעֵת הַהִיא: בַּבָּמָה בְּגִבְעוֹן. לוְלֹא יָכֹל דָּוִיד לָלֶכֶת לְפָנָיו לִדְרֹשׁ אֱלֹהִים: כִּי נִבְעַת מִפְּנֵי חֶרֶב מַלְאַךְ יהוה .
