Mishlim 1 – משלים א

¹Mishlei Shlomo Ben David, Melekh Yisra’el;

²To know wisdom and instruction; to comprehend the words of understanding;

³To receive the discipline of wisdom, justice, and righteousness, and equity;

⁴To give prudence to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion;

⁵That the wise man may hear, and increase in learning, and the man of understanding may attain unto wise counsels;

⁶To understand a mashal, and a figure; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

⁷The fear of  יהוה  is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and discipline.

⁸Hear, my son, the instruction of your father, and forsake not the teaching of your mother;

⁹For they shall be an ornament of grace unto your head, and chains about your neck.

¹⁰B’ni, if sinners entice you, consent not.

¹¹If they say, “Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood, let us lurk for the innocent without cause;

¹²Let us swallow them up alive as the grave, and whole, as those that go down into the pit;

¹³We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil;

¹⁴Cast in your lot among us; let us all have one purse.”

¹⁵B’ni, walk not in the way with them, restrain your foot from their path;

¹⁶For their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.

¹⁷For in vain the net is spread in the eyes of any bird;

¹⁸And these lie in wait for their own blood, they lurk for their own lives.

¹⁹So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; it takes away the life of the owners thereof.

²⁰Wisdom cries aloud in the streets, she utters her voice in the broad places;

²¹She calls at the head of the noisy streets, at the entrances of the gates, in the city, she utters her words:

²²“How long, you thoughtless, will you love thoughtlessness? And how long will scorners delight them in scorning, and fools hate knowledge?’

²³Turn at my reproof; behold, I will pour out my Ru’akh unto you, I will make known my D’varim unto you.

²⁴Because I have called, and you refused, I have stretched out my hand, and no man attended,

²⁵But you have set at nought all my counsel, and would have none of my reproof;

²⁶I also, in your calamity, will laugh, I will mock when your dread comes;

²⁷When your dread comes as a storm, and your calamity comes on as a whirlwind; when trouble and distress come upon you.

²⁸Then will they call me, but I will not answer, they will seek me earnestly, but they shall not find me.

²⁹For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of  יהוה ;

³⁰They would have none of my counsel, they despised all my reproof.

³¹Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.

³²For the waywardness of the thoughtless shall slay them, and the confidence of fools shall destroy them.

³³But whoever hearkens unto me shall dwell securely, and shall be quiet, without fear of evil.”

^אמִשְׁלֵי שְׁלֹמֹה בֶן דָּוִד מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל.

^בלָדַעַת חָכְמָה וּמוּסָר; לְהָבִין אִמְרֵי בִינָה.

^גלָקַחַת מוּסַר הַשְׂכֵּל; צֶדֶק וּמִשְׁפָּט וּמֵשָׁרִים.

^דלָתֵת לִפְתָאיִם עָרְמָה; לְנַעַר דַּעַת וּמְזִמָּה.

^היִשְׁמַע חָכָם וְיוֹסֶף לֶקַח; וְנָבוֹן תַּחְבֻּלוֹת יִקְנֶה.

^ולְהָבִין מָשָׁל וּמְלִיצָה; דִּבְרֵי חֲכָמִים וְחִידֹתָם.

^זיִרְאַת יהוה רֵאשִׁית דָּעַת; חָכְמָה וּמוּסָר אֱוִילִים בָּזוּ.

^חשְׁמַע בְּנִי מוּסַר אָבִיךָ; וְאַל תִּטֹּשׁ תּוֹרַת אִמֶּךָ.

^טכִּי לִוְיַת חֵן הֵם לְרֹאשֶׁךָ; וַעֲנָקִים לְגַרְגְּרֹתֶךָ.

^יבְּנִי אִם יְפַתּוּךָ חַטָּאִים אַל תֹּבֵא.

^יאאִם יֹאמְרוּ לְכָה אִתָּנוּ: נֶאֶרְבָה לְדָם; נִצְפְּנָה לְנָקִי חִנָּם.

^יבנִבְלָעֵם כִּשְׁאוֹל חַיִּים; וּתְמִימִים כְּיוֹרְדֵי בוֹר.

^יגכָּל הוֹן יָקָר נִמְצָא; נְמַלֵּא בָתֵּינוּ שָׁלָל.

^ידגּוֹרָלְךָ תַּפִּיל בְּתוֹכֵנוּ; כִּיס אֶחָד יִהְיֶה לְכֻלָּנוּ.

^טובְּנִי אַל תֵּלֵךְ בְּדֶרֶךְ אִתָּם; מְנַע רַגְלְךָ מִנְּתִיבָתָם.

^טזכִּי רַגְלֵיהֶם לָרַע יָרוּצוּ; וִימַהֲרוּ לִשְׁפָּךְ דָּם.

^יזכִּי חִנָּם מְזֹרָה הָרָשֶׁת בְּעֵינֵי כָּל בַּעַל כָּנָף.

^יחוְהֵם לְדָמָם יֶאֱרֹבוּ; יִצְפְּנוּ לְנַפְשֹׁתָם.

^יטכֵּן אָרְחוֹת כָּל בֹּצֵעַ בָּצַע; אֶת נֶפֶשׁ בְּעָלָיו יִקָּח.

^כחָכְמוֹת בַּחוּץ תָּרֹנָּה; בָּרְחֹבוֹת תִּתֵּן קוֹלָהּ.

^כאבְּרֹאשׁ הֹמִיּוֹת תִּקְרָא: בְּפִתְחֵי שְׁעָרִים בָּעִיר אֲמָרֶיהָ תֹאמֵר.

^כבעַד מָתַי פְּתָיִם תְּאֵהֲבוּ פֶתִי: וְלֵצִים לָצוֹן חָמְדוּ לָהֶם; וּכְסִילִים יִשְׂנְאוּ דָעַת.

^כגתָּשׁוּבוּ לְתוֹכַחְתִּי: הִנֵּה אַבִּיעָה לָכֶם רוּחִי; אוֹדִיעָה דְבָרַי אֶתְכֶם.

^כדיַעַן קָרָאתִי וַתְּמָאֵנוּ; נָטִיתִי יָדִי וְאֵין מַקְשִׁיב.

^כהוַתִּפְרְעוּ כָל עֲצָתִי; וְתוֹכַחְתִּי לֹא אֲבִיתֶם.

^כוגַּם אֲנִי בְּאֵידְכֶם אֶשְׂחָק; אֶלְעַג בְּבֹא פַחְדְּכֶם.

^כזבְּבֹא כשאוה (כְשׁוֹאָה) פַּחְדְּכֶם וְאֵידְכֶם כְּסוּפָה יֶאֱתֶה; בְּבֹא עֲלֵיכֶם צָרָה וְצוּקָה.

^כחאָז יִקְרָאֻנְנִי וְלֹא אֶעֱנֶה; יְשַׁחֲרֻנְנִי וְלֹא יִמְצָאֻנְנִי.

^כטתַּחַת כִּי שָׂנְאוּ דָעַת; וְיִרְאַת יהוה לֹא בָחָרוּ.

^ללֹא אָבוּ לַעֲצָתִי; נָאֲצוּ כָּל תּוֹכַחְתִּי.

^לאוְיֹאכְלוּ מִפְּרִי דַרְכָּם; וּמִמֹּעֲצֹתֵיהֶם יִשְׂבָּעוּ.

^לבכִּי מְשׁוּבַת פְּתָיִם תַּהַרְגֵם; וְשַׁלְוַת כְּסִילִים תְּאַבְּדֵם.

^לגוְשֹׁמֵעַ לִי יִשְׁכָּן בֶּטַח; וְשַׁאֲנַן מִפַּחַד רָעָה.
