Ezrah 4 – עזרא ד

1Now when the adversaries of Yehudah and Binyamin heard that the children of the captivity were building a Heikhal unto  יהוה  Elohei Yisra’el; 2then they drew near to Zerubavel, and to the heads of the fathers’ houses, and said unto them, “Let us build with you; for we seek your Elohim, as you do; and we do sacrifice unto Him since the days of Esarhadon king of Ashur, who brought us up here.” 3But Zerubavel, and Yeshua, and the rest of the heads of the fathers’ houses of Yisra’el, said unto them, “You have nothing to do with us to build a house unto our Elohim; but we ourselves together will build unto  יהוה  Elohei Yisra’el, as king Koresh the king of Paras has commanded us.” 4Then the people of the land idled the hands of the people of Yehudah, and harried them while they were building, 5and hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Koresh king of Paras, even until the reign of Daryavesh king of Paras. 6And in the reign of Akhashverosh, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Yehudah and Yerushalayim.  7And in the days of Artakhshastah wrote Bishlam, Mitredat, Tavel, and the rest of his companions, unto Artakhshastah king of Paras; and the writing of the letter was written in the Aramaic character, and set forth in the Aramaic tongue.

8Rekhum the commander and Shimshai the Sofer wrote a letter against Yerushalayim to Artakhshastah the king in this sort, 9then wrote Rekhum the commander, and Shimshai the Sofer, and the rest of their companions; the Dinayeh, and the Afarsatkhayei, the Tarflayei, the Afarsayei, the Arkevayei, the Bavlayei, the Shushankhayei, the Dehayei, the Elmayei, 10and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asenapar brought over, and set in the city of Shomron, and the rest that are in the country beyond the River: “And now, 11this is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, even unto Artakhshastah the king, your servants the men beyond the River, and now”

12“Be it known unto the king, that the Yehudim that came up from you are come to us unto Yerushalayim; they are building the rebellious and the bad city, and have finished the walls, and are digging out the foundations. 13Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city is built, and the walls finished, they will not pay tribute, impost, or toll, and so you will damage the revenue of the kings. 14Now because we eat the salt of the palace, and it is not suitable for us to see the king’s dishonor, therefore have we sent and announced to the king, 15that search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers; so shall you find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time; for which cause was this city laid waste. 16We announce to the king that, if this city is built, and the walls finished, by this means you shall have no portion beyond the River.”

17Then the king sent an answer unto Rekhum the commander, and to Shimshai the Sofer, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Shomron, and unto the rest beyond the River, “Shalom, and now 18the letter which you sent unto us has been plainly read before me. 19And I decreed, and search has been made, and it is found that this city of old time has made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein. 20There have been mighty kings also over Yerushalayim, who have ruled over all the country beyond the River; and tribute, impost, and toll, was paid unto them. 21Make now a decree to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not built, until a decree shall be made by me. 22And take heed that you are not slack herein; why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?”  23Then when the copy of king Artakhshastah’s letter was read before Rekhum, and Shimshai the Sofer, and their companions, they went in haste to Yerushalayim unto the Yehudim, and made them to cease by force and power.  24Then the work of Beit HaElohim ceased which is at Yerushalayim; and it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Daryavesh king of Paras.
