Melakhim Bet 19 – מלכים ב פרק יט

1And it came to pass, when Melekh Khizki-Yahu heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into Beit  יהוה . And2 he sent El Yakim, who was over the household, and Shevna the scribe, and the elders of the Kohanim, covered with sackcloth, unto Yesha-Yahu HaNavi, Ben Amotz. 3And they said unto him, “Thus says Khizki-Yahu, ‘This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of blasphemy; for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth. 4It may be  יהוה  your Elohim will hear all the words of Rav Shakeh, whom the king of Ashur his master has sent to taunt the living Elohim, and will rebuke the words which  יהוה  your Elohim has heard; therefore make prayer for the remnant that is left’.” 5So the servants of Melekh Khizki-Yahu came to Yesha-Yahu. 6And Yesha-Yahu said unto them, “Thus shall you say to your master, ‘Thus says  יהוה , ‘Be not afraid of the words that you have heard, wherewith the servants of the king of Ashur have blasphemed Me. 7Behold, I will put a spirit in him, and he shall hear a rumor, and shall return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land’.'” 8So Rav Shakeh returned, and found the king of Ashur warring against Livnah; for he had heard that he was departed from Lakhishah. 9And when he heard say of Tirhakah king of Kush, “Behold, he is come out to fight against you”; he sent messengers again unto Khizki-Yah, saying, 10‘Thus shall you speak to Khizki-Yahu Melekh Yehudah, saying, ‘Let not your Elohim, in whom you trust, beguile you, saying, ‘Yerushalayim shall not be given into the hand of the king of Ashur’. 11Behold, you have heard what the kings of Ashur have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly; and shall you be delivered? 12Have the gods of the nations delivered them, which my fathers have destroyed, Gozan, and Kharan, and Retzef, and the children of Eden that were in Telasar? 13Where is the king of Khamat, and the king of Arfad, and the king of the city of Sefarvayim, of Khena, and Ivah?'” 14And Khizki-Yahu received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Khizki-Yahu went up unto Beit  יהוה , and spread it before  יהוה .

15And Khizki-Yahu prayed before  יהוה , and said, “O  יהוה  Elohei Yisra’el, that sits upon the keruvim, You are Elohim, even You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; You have made heaven and earth. 16Incline Your ear, O  יהוה , and hear; open Your eyes, O  יהוה , and see; and hear the words of Sankheriv, wherewith he has sent him to taunt the living Elohim. 17Of a truth,  יהוה , the kings of Ashur have laid waste the nations and their lands, 18and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were not gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone; therefore they have destroyed them. 19Now therefore, O  יהוה  our Elohim, save us, I beseech You, out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You are  יהוה  Elohim, even You only.”

20Then Yesha-Yahu Ben Amotz sent to Khizki-Yahu, saying, “Thus says  יהוה Elohei Yisra’el, ‘Whereas you have prayed to Me against Sankheriv king of Ashur, I have heard you. 21This is HaDavar that  יהוה  has spoken concerning him, ‘The virgin daughter of Tzion has despised you and laughed you to scorn; Bat Yerushalayim has shaken her head at you. 22Whom have you taunted and blasphemed? And against whom have you exalted your voice? Yes, you have lifted up your eyes on high, even against HaKadosh Yisra’el! 23By your messengers you have taunted Adonai, and have said, ‘With the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the innermost parts of Levanon; and I have cut down the tall cedars thereof, and the choice cypresses thereof; and I have entered into his farthest lodge, the forest of his fruitful field. 24I have digged and drunk strange waters, and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of Mitzrayim’. 25Have you not heard? Long ago I made it, in ancient times I fashioned it; now have I brought it to pass, yes, it is done; that fortified cities should be laid waste into ruinous heaps. 26Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as grain blasted before it is grown up. 27But I know your sitting down, and your going out, and your coming in, and your raging against Me. 28Because of your raging against Me, and for that your tumult is come up into My ears, therefore will I put My hook in your nose, and My bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way by which you came. 29And this shall be the sign unto you: you shall eat this year that which grows of itself, and in the second year that which springs of the same; and in the third year sow, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruit thereof. 30And the remnant that is escaped of Beit Yehudah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward. 31For out of Yerushalayim shall go forth a remnant, and out of Har Tzion they that shall escape; the Zeal of  יהוה  Tzeva’ot shall perform this’.  32Therefore thus says  יהוה  concerning the king of Ashur, ‘He shall not come unto this city, nor shoot an arrow there, neither shall he come before it with shield, nor cast a mound against it. 33By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and he shall not come unto this city’, says  יהוה . ‘For34 I will defend this city to save it, for My own sake, and for My servant David’s sake’.”

35And it came to pass that night, that the Malakh  יהוה  went forth, and smote in the camp of Ashur a hundred and eighty five thousand; and when men arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses. 36So Sankheriv king of Ashur departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh. 37And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisrokh his god, that Adramelekh and Sarezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. And Esarhadon his son reigned in his stead.
