1On that day they read in the book of Moshe in the hearing of the people; and therein was found written, that an Amoni and a Mo’avi should not enter into the assembly of Elohim forever; 2because they met not B’nei Yisra’el with bread and with water, but hired Bilam against them, to curse them; however our Elohim turned the curse into a blessing. 3And it came to pass, when they had heard the Torah, that they separated from Yisra’el all the alien mixture. 4Now before this, Elyashiv the Kohen, who was appointed over the chambers of Beit Eloheinu, being allied unto Tov-Yah, 5had prepared for him a great chamber, where before they laid the minkhah offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tenth-parts of the grain, the wine, and the oil, which were given by Mitzvah to the Levi’im, and the singers, and the porters; and the Terumah offerings for the Kohanim. 6But in all this time I was not at Yerushalayim; for in the thirty-second year of Artakhshastah king of Bavel I went unto the king, and after certain days asked I leave of the king; 7and I came to Yerushalayim, and understood the evil that Elyashiv had done for Tov-Yah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of Beit HaElohim. 8And it grieved me sore; therefore I cast forth all the household stuff of Tov-Yah out of the chamber. 9Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers; and there I brought again the vessels of Beit HaElohim, with the minkhah offerings and the frankincense.
10And I perceived that the portions of the Levi’im had not been given them; so that the Levi’im and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field. 11Then I contended with the rulers, and said, “Why is Beit HaElohim forsaken?” And I gathered them together, and set them in their place. 12Then all Yehudah brought the tenth-part of the grain and the wine and the oil unto the treasuries. 13And I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelem-Yah the kohen, and Tzadok the Sofer, and of the Levi’im, Peda-Yah; and next to them was Khanan Ben Zakur, Ben Matan-Yah; for they were counted faithful, and their office was to distribute unto their brethren.
14Remember me, O my Elohim, concerning this, and wipe not out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my Elohim, and for the wards thereof. 15In those days I saw in Yehudah some treading winepresses on Shabbat, and bringing in heaps of grain, and lading donkeys therewith; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Yerushalayim on Yom HaShabbat; and I forewarned them in the day wherein they sold victuals. 16There dwelt men of Tzor also therein, who brought in fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on Shabbat unto the children of Yehudah, and in Yerushalayim. 17Then I contended with the nobles of Yehudah, and said unto them, “What evil thing is this that you do, and profane Yom HaShabbat? 18Did not your fathers do this, and did not our Elohim bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? Yet you bring more wrath upon Yisra’el by profaning Shabbat!”
19And it came to pass that, when the gates of Yerushalayim began to be dark before Shabbat, I commanded that the doors should be shut, and commanded that they should not be opened till after Shabbat; and some of my servants I set over the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on Yom HaShabbat. 20So the merchants and sellers of all kind of ware lodged without Yerushalayim once or twice. 21Then I forewarned them, and said unto them, “Why do you lodge about the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time forth they came no more on Shabbat. 22And I commanded the Levi’im that they should purify themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to consecrate Yom HaShabbat. Remember unto me, O my Elohim, this also, and spare me according to the greatness of your mercy.
23In those days also I saw the Yehudim that had married women of Ashdod, of Amon, and of Mo’av; 24and their children spoke half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the language of the Yehudim, but according to the language of each people. 25And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by Elohim, “You shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons, or for yourselves. 26Did not Shlomo Melekh Yisra’el sin by these things? Yet among many nations was there no king like him, and he was beloved of his Elohim, and Elohim made him king over all Yisra’el; nevertheless even him did the foreign women cause to sin. 27Shall we then hearken unto you to do all this great evil, to break faithfulness with our Elohim in marrying foreign women?” 28And one of the sons of Yoyada, Ben Elyashiv the Kohen HaGadol, was son-in-law to Sanvalat the Khoroni; therefore I chased him from me. 29Remember them, O my Elohim, because they have defiled the kehunah, and the Brit HaKehunah, and of the Levi’im. 30Thus I cleansed them from everything foreign, and appointed wards for the Kohanim and for the Levi’im, every one in his work; 31and for the wood-offering, at times appointed, and for the Bikkurim. Remember me, O my Elohim, for good.
אבַּיּוֹם הַהוּא נִקְרָא בְּסֵפֶר מֹשֶׁה בְּאָזְנֵי הָעָם; וְנִמְצָא כָּתוּב בּוֹ אֲשֶׁר לֹא יָבוֹא עַמֹּנִי וּמוֹאָבִי בִּקְהַל הָאֱלֹהִים עַד עוֹלָם. בכִּי לֹא קִדְּמוּ אֶת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בַּלֶּחֶם וּבַמָּיִם; וַיִּשְׂכֹּר עָלָיו אֶת בִּלְעָם לְקַלְלוֹ וַיַּהֲפֹךְ אֱלֹהֵינוּ הַקְּלָלָה לִבְרָכָה. גוַיְהִי כְּשָׁמְעָם אֶת הַתּוֹרָה; וַיַּבְדִּילוּ כָל עֵרֶב מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל. דוְלִפְנֵי מִזֶּה אֶלְיָשִׁיב הַכֹּהֵן נָתוּן בְּלִשְׁכַּת בֵּית אֱלֹהֵינוּ: קָרוֹב לְטוֹבִיָּה. הוַיַּעַשׂ לוֹ לִשְׁכָּה גְדוֹלָה וְשָׁם הָיוּ לְפָנִים נֹתְנִים אֶת הַמִּנְחָה הַלְּבוֹנָה וְהַכֵּלִים וּמַעְשַׂר הַדָּגָן הַתִּירוֹשׁ וְהַיִּצְהָר מִצְוַת הַלְוִיִּם וְהַמְשֹׁרְרִים וְהַשּׁוֹעֲרִים; וּתְרוּמַת הַכֹּהֲנִים. ווּבְכָל זֶה לֹא הָיִיתִי בִּירוּשָׁלִָם: כִּי בִּשְׁנַת שְׁלֹשִׁים וּשְׁתַּיִם לְאַרְתַּחְשַׁסְתְּא מֶלֶךְ בָּבֶל בָּאתִי אֶל הַמֶּלֶךְ וּלְקֵץ יָמִים נִשְׁאַלְתִּי מִן הַמֶּלֶךְ. זוָאָבוֹא לִירוּשָׁלִָם; וָאָבִינָה בָרָעָה אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה אֶלְיָשִׁיב לְטוֹבִיָּה לַעֲשׂוֹת לוֹ נִשְׁכָּה בְּחַצְרֵי בֵּית הָאֱלֹהִים. חוַיֵּרַע לִי מְאֹד; וָאַשְׁלִיכָה אֶת כָּל כְּלֵי בֵית טוֹבִיָּה הַחוּץ מִן הַלִּשְׁכָּה. טוָאֹמְרָה וַיְטַהֲרוּ הַלְּשָׁכוֹת; וָאָשִׁיבָה שָּׁם כְּלֵי בֵּית הָאֱלֹהִים אֶת הַמִּנְחָה וְהַלְּבוֹנָה.
יוָאֵדְעָה כִּי מְנָיוֹת הַלְוִיִּם לֹא נִתָּנָה ; וַיִּבְרְחוּ אִישׁ לְשָׂדֵהוּ הַלְוִיִּם וְהַמְשֹׁרְרִים עֹשֵׂי
הַמְּלָאכָה. יאוָאָרִיבָה אֶת הַסְּגָנִים וָאֹמְרָה מַדּוּעַ נֶעֱזַב בֵּית הָאֱלֹהִים; וָאֶקְבְּצֵם וָאַעֲמִדֵם עַל עָמְדָם. יבוְכָל יְהוּדָה הֵבִיאוּ מַעְשַׂר הַדָּגָן וְהַתִּירוֹשׁ וְהַיִּצְהָר לָאוֹצָרוֹת. יגוָאוֹצְרָה עַל אוֹצָרוֹת שֶׁלֶמְיָה הַכֹּהֵן וְצָדוֹק הַסּוֹפֵר וּפְדָיָה מִן הַלְוִיִּם וְעַל יָדָם חָנָן בֶּן זַכּוּר בֶּן מַתַּנְיָה: כִּי נֶאֱמָנִים נֶחְשָׁבוּ וַעֲלֵיהֶם לַחֲלֹק לַאֲחֵיהֶם.
ידזָכְרָה לִּי אֱלֹהַי עַל זֹאת; וְאַל תֶּמַח חֲסָדַי אֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתִי בְּבֵית אֱלֹהַי וּבְמִשְׁמָרָיו. טובַּיָּמִים הָהֵמָּה רָאִיתִי בִיהוּדָה דֹּרְכִים גִּתּוֹת בַּשַּׁבָּת וּמְבִיאִים הָעֲרֵמוֹת וְעֹמְסִים עַל הַחֲמֹרִים וְאַף יַיִן עֲנָבִים וּתְאֵנִים וְכָל מַשָּׂא וּמְבִיאִים יְרוּשָׁלִַם בְּיוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת; וָאָעִיד בְּיוֹם מִכְרָם צָיִד. טזוְהַצֹּרִים יָשְׁבוּ בָהּ מְבִיאִים דָּאג וְכָל מֶכֶר; וּמוֹכְרִים בַּשַּׁבָּת לִבְנֵי יְהוּדָה וּבִירוּשָׁלִָם. יזוָאָרִיבָה אֵת חֹרֵי יְהוּדָה; וָאֹמְרָה לָהֶם מָה הַדָּבָר הָרָע הַזֶּה אֲשֶׁר אַתֶּם עֹשִׂים וּמְחַלְּלִים אֶת יוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת. יחהֲלוֹא כֹה עָשׂוּ אֲבֹתֵיכֶם וַיָּבֵא אֱלֹהֵינוּ עָלֵינוּ אֵת כָּל הָרָעָה הַזֹּאת וְעַל הָעִיר הַזֹּאת; וְאַתֶּם מוֹסִיפִים חָרוֹן עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל לְחַלֵּל אֶת הַשַּׁבָּת.
יטוַיְהִי כַּאֲשֶׁר צָלְלוּ שַׁעֲרֵי יְרוּשָׁלִַם לִפְנֵי הַשַּׁבָּת וָאֹמְרָה וַיִּסָּגְרוּ הַדְּלָתוֹת וָאֹמְרָה אֲשֶׁר לֹא יִפְתָּחוּם עַד אַחַר הַשַּׁבָּת; וּמִנְּעָרַי הֶעֱמַדְתִּי עַל הַשְּׁעָרִים לֹא יָבוֹא מַשָּׂא בְּיוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת. כוַיָּלִינוּ הָרֹכְלִים וּמֹכְרֵי כָל מִמְכָּר מִחוּץ לִירוּשָׁלִָם פַּעַם וּשְׁתָּיִם. כאוָאָעִידָה בָהֶם וָאֹמְרָה אֲלֵיהֶם מַדּוּעַ אַתֶּם לֵנִים נֶגֶד הַחוֹמָה אִם תִּשְׁנוּ יָד אֶשְׁלַח בָּכֶם; מִן הָעֵת הַהִיא לֹא בָאוּ בַּשַּׁבָּת. כבוָאֹמְרָה לַלְוִיִּם אֲשֶׁר יִהְיוּ מִטַּהֲרִים וּבָאִים שֹׁמְרִים הַשְּׁעָרִים לְקַדֵּשׁ אֶת יוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת; גַּם זֹאת זָכְרָה לִּי אֱלֹהַי וְחוּסָה עָלַי כְּרֹב חַסְדֶּךָ.
כגגַּם בַּיָּמִים הָהֵם רָאִיתִי אֶת הַיְּהוּדִים הֹשִׁיבוּ נָשִׁים אשדודיות (אַשְׁדֳּדִיּוֹת) עמוניות (עַמֳּנִיּוֹת) מוֹאֲבִיּוֹת. כדוּבְנֵיהֶם חֲצִי מְדַבֵּר אַשְׁדּוֹדִית וְאֵינָם מַכִּירִים לְדַבֵּר יְהוּדִית וְכִלְשׁוֹן עַם וָעָם. כהוָאָרִיב עִמָּם וָאֲקַלְלֵם וָאַכֶּה מֵהֶם אֲנָשִׁים וָאֶמְרְטֵם; וָאַשְׁבִּיעֵם בֵּאלֹהִים אִם תִּתְּנוּ בְנֹתֵיכֶם לִבְנֵיהֶם וְאִם תִּשְׂאוּ מִבְּנֹתֵיהֶם לִבְנֵיכֶם וְלָכֶם. כוהֲלוֹא עַל אֵלֶּה חָטָא שְׁלֹמֹה מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל וּבַגּוֹיִם הָרַבִּים לֹא הָיָה מֶלֶךְ כָּמֹהוּ וְאָהוּב לֵאלֹהָיו הָיָה וַיִּתְּנֵהוּ אֱלֹהִים מֶלֶךְ עַל כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל: גַּם אוֹתוֹ הֶחֱטִיאוּ הַנָּשִׁים הַנָּכְרִיּוֹת. כזוְלָכֶם הֲנִשְׁמַע לַעֲשֹׂת אֵת כָּל הָרָעָה הַגְּדוֹלָה הַזֹּאת לִמְעֹל בֵּאלֹהֵינוּ: לְהֹשִׁיב נָשִׁים נָכְרִיּוֹת. כחוּמִבְּנֵי יוֹיָדָע בֶּן אֶלְיָשִׁיב הַכֹּהֵן הַגָּדוֹל חָתָן לְסַנְבַלַּט הַחֹרֹנִי; וָאַבְרִיחֵהוּ מֵעָלָי. כטזָכְרָה לָהֶם אֱלֹהָי: עַל גָּאֳלֵי הַכְּהֻנָּה וּבְרִית הַכְּהֻנָּה וְהַלְוִיִּם. לוְטִהַרְתִּים מִכָּל נֵכָר; וָאַעֲמִידָה מִשְׁמָרוֹת לַכֹּהֲנִים וְלַלְוִיִּם אִישׁ בִּמְלַאכְתּוֹ. לאוּלְקֻרְבַּן הָעֵצִים בְּעִתִּים מְזֻמָּנוֹת וְלַבִּכּוּרִים; זָכְרָה לִּי אֱלֹהַי לְטוֹבָה.
