Nekhem-Yah 8 – נחמיה ח

1All the people gathered themselves together as one man into the broad place that was before the water gate; and they spoke unto Ezrah the Sofer to bring the Sefer of the Torah of Moshe, which  יהוה  had commanded to Yisra’el. 2And Ezrah the Kohen brought the Torah before the congregation, both men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh khodesh. 3And he read therein before the broad place that was before the water gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women, and of those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the Sefer HaTorah. 4And Ezrah the Sofer stood upon a platform of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Matit-Yah, and Shema, and Ana-Yah, and Uri-Yah, and Khilki-Yah, and Ma’asei-Yah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Peda-Yah, and Misha’el, and Malkhi-Yah, and Khashum, and Hashbadanah, Zekhar-Yah, and Meshulam.

5And Ezrah opened the Sefer in the sight of all the people, for he was above all the people,  and when he opened it,  all the people stood up.  6And Ezrah blessed  יהוה ,  the  great Elohim. And all the people answered, “Amein, Amein”, with the lifting up of their hands; and they bowed their heads, and fell down before  יהוה  with their faces to the ground. 7Also Yeshua, and Bani, and Sherev-Yah, Yamin, Akuv, Shabetai, Hodi-Yah, Ma’asei-Yah, Kelita, Azar-Yah, Yozavad, Khanan, Pela-Yah, even the Levi’im, caused the people to understand the Torah; and the people stood in their place. 8And they read in the book, in the Torah of Elohim, distinctly; and they gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.  9And Nekhem-Yah, who was the Tirshatah, and Ezrah the Kohen, the Sofer, and the Levi’im that taught the people, said unto all the people, “This day is Kadosh unto  יהוה  your Elohim; mourn not, nor weep.” For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the Torah. 10Then he said unto them, “Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto him for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is Kadosh unto Adoneinu; neither be grieved; for the joy of  יהוה  is your strength.” 11So the Levi’im stilled all the people, saying, “Hold your peace, for the day is kadosh; neither be grieved.” 12And all the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared unto them.  13And on the second day were gathered together the heads of fathers’ houses of all the people, the Kohanim, and the Levi’im, unto Ezrah the Sofer, even to give attention to the words of the Torah. 14And they found written in the Torah, how that  יהוה  had commanded by Moshe, that B’nei Yisra’el should dwell in sukkot in the feast of the seventh khodesh; 15and that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Yerushalayim, saying, “Go forth unto the mount, and fetch olive branches, and branches of wild olive, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make sukkot, as it is written.”

16So the people went forth, and brought them, and made themselves sukkot, every one upon the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of Beit HaElohim, and in the broad place of the water gate, and in the broad place of the gate of Efrayim. 17And all the congregation of them that were come back out of the captivity made sukkot, and dwelt in the sukkot; for since the days of Yeshua Bin Nun unto that day had not B’nei Yisra’el done so. And there was very great gladness. 18Also day by day, from the first day unto the last day, he read in the book of the Torah of Elohim. And they kept the Khag seven days; and on the eighth day [Sh’mini] Atzeret, according unto the ordinance.
