Shmu’el Bet 10 – שמואל ב פרק י

1And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Amon died, and Khanun his son reigned in his stead. 2And David said, “I will show kindness unto Khanun Ben Nakhash, as his father showed kindness unto me.” So David sent by the hand of his servants to comfort him concerning his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the children of Amon. 3But the princes of the children of Amon said unto Khanun their lord, “Do you think that David honors your father, that he has sent comforters unto you? Has not David sent his servants unto you to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?” 4So Khanun took David’s servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away. 5When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them; for the men were greatly ashamed. And HaMelekh said, “Tarry at Yerekho until your beards are grown, and then return.” 6And when the children of Amon saw that they were become odious to David, the children of Amon sent and hired Aram of Beit Reikhov, and Aram of Tzovah, twenty thousand footmen, and the king of Ma’akhah with a thousand men, and the men of Tov twelve thousand men. 7And when David heard of it, he sent Yo’av, and all the host of the mighty men.

8And the children of Amon came out, and put the battle in array at the entrance of the gate; and Aram of Tzovah, and of Reikhov, and the men of Tov and Ma’akhah, were by themselves in the field. 9Now when Yo’av saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Yisra’el, and put them in array against Aram; 10and the rest of the people he committed into the hand of Avishai his brother, and he put them in array against the children of Amon. 11And he said, “If Aram is too strong for me, then you shall help me, but if the children of Amon are too strong for you, then I will come and help you. 12Be of good courage, and let us prove strong for our people, and for the cities of our Elohim; and  יהוה  do that which seems good to Him.”

13So Yo’av and the people that were with him drew nigh unto the battle against Aram; and they fled before him. 14And when the children of Amon saw that Aram had fled, they likewise fled before Avishai, and entered into the city. Then Yo’av returned from the children of Amon, and came to Yerushalayim. 15And when Aram saw that they were put to the worse before Yisra’el, they gathered themselves together. 16And Hadadezer sent, and brought out Aram that was beyond the River;  and they came to Khelam, with Shovakh the captain of the host of Hadadezer at their head. 17And it was told to David; and he gathered all Yisra’el together, and passed over the Yarden, and came to Khelam. And Aram set themselves in array against David, and fought with him. 18And Aram fled before Yisra’el; and David slew of Aram seven hundred drivers of chariots, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shovakh the captain of their host, so that he died there. 19And when all the kings that were servants to Hadadezer saw that they were put to the worse before Yisra’el, they made shalom with Yisra’el, and served them. So Aram feared to help the children of Amon any more.
