Shmu’el Bet 17 – שמואל ב פרק יז

1Moreover, Akhitofel said unto Avshalom, “Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night; 2and I will come upon him while he is weary and weak-handed, and will make him afraid; and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will smite HaMelekh only; 3and I will bring back all the people unto you; when all shall have returned, [save] the man whom you seek, all the people will be in shalom.”  4And the saying pleased Avshalom well, and all the elders of Yisra’el.

5Then said Avshalom, “Call now Khushai HaArki also, and let us hear likewise what he says.” 6And when Khushai came to Avshalom, Avshalom spoke unto him, saying, “Akhitofel has spoken after this manner; shall we do after his saying? If not, you speak.”

7And Khushai said unto Avshalom, “The counsel that Akhitofel has given this time is not good.” 8Khushai said moreover, “You know your father and his men, that they are mighty men, and they are embittered in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field; and your father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people. 9Behold, he is hid now in some pit, or in some place; and it will come to pass, when they fall upon them at the first, and whoever hears it shall say, ‘There is a slaughter among the people that follow Avshalom’; 10then even he that is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, will utterly melt; for all Yisra’el knows that your father is a mighty man, and they that are with him are valiant men. 11But I counsel that all Yisra’el be gathered together unto you, from Dan even to Be’er Sheva, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that you go to battle in your own person. 12So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falls on the ground; and of him and of all the men that are with him we will not leave so much as one. 13Moreover, if he withdraws himself into a city, then shall all Yisra’el bring up ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the valley until there is not one small stone found there.”

14And Avshalom and all the men of Yisra’el said, “The counsel of Khushai HaArki is better than the counsel of Akhitofel.”  For  יהוה  had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Akhitofel, to the intent that  יהוה  might bring evil upon Avshalom.

15Then said Khushai unto Tzadok and to Evyatar the kohanim, “Thus and thus did Akhitofel counsel Avshalom and the elders of Yisra’el; and thus and thus have I counselled. 16Now therefore, send quickly, and tell David, saying, ‘Lodge not this night in the plains of the wilderness, but in any wise pass over; lest HaMelekh be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him’.” 17Now Yehonatan and Akhima’atz stayed by Ein Rogel; and a maid-servant used to go and tell them; and they went and told Melekh David; for they might not be seen to come into the city. 18But a lad saw them, and told Avshalom; and they went both of them away quickly, and came to the house of a man in Bakhurim, who had a well in his court; and they went down into it. 19And the woman took and spread the covering over the well’s mouth, and strewed groats thereon; and nothing was known. 20And Avshalom’s servants came to the woman to the house; and they said, “Where are Akhima’atz and Yehonatan?” And the woman said unto them, “They are gone over the brook of water.” And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Yerushalayim.

21And it came to pass, after they were departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told Melekh David; and they said unto David, “Arise, and pass quickly over the water; for thus has Akhitofel counselled against you.” 22Then David arose, and all the people that were with him, and they passed over the Yarden; by the morning light there lacked not one of them that was not gone over the Yarden. 23And when Akhitofel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his donkey, and arose, and went home unto his city, and set his house in order, and strangled himself; and he died, and was buried in the tomb of his father.

24When David was come to Makhanaimah, Avshalom passed over the Yarden, he and all the men of Yisra’el with him. 25And Avshalom had set Amasa over the host instead of Yo’av. Now Amasa was the son of a man, whose name was Itra HaYisreli, that went in to Avigal Bat Nakhash, sister to Tzru-Yah, Yo’av’s mother. 26And Yisra’el and Avshalom pitched in the land of Gilad.

27And it came to pass, when David was come to Makhanaimah, that Shovi Ben Nakhash of Rabah, of the children of Amon, and Makhir Ben Ami’el of Lo D’var, and Barzilai HaGiladi of Rogelim, 28brought beds, and basins, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and meal, and parched grain, and beans, and lentils, and parched pulse, 29and honey, and curd, and sheep, and cheese of kine, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat; for they said, “The people are hungry, and faint, and thirsty, in the wilderness.”
