1And HaMelekh was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept; and as he went, thus he said, “O my son Avshalom, my son, my son Avshalom! Would that I had died for you, O Avshalom, my son, my son!” 2And it was told Yo’av, “Behold, HaMelekh weeps and mourns for Avshalom.” 3And the victory that day was turned into mourning unto all the people; for the people heard it said that day, “HaMelekh grieves for his son.” 4And the people got them by stealth that day into the city, as people that are ashamed steal away when they flee in battle. 5And HaMelekh covered his face, and HaMelekh cried with a loud voice, “O my son Avshalom, O Avshalom, my son, my son!”
6And Yo’av came into the house to HaMelekh, and said, “You have shamed this day the faces of all your servants, who this day have saved your life, and the lives of your sons and of your daughters, and the lives of your wives, and the lives of your concubines; 7in that you love them that hate you, and hate them that love you. For you have declared this day that princes and servants are nought unto you; for this day I perceive, that if Avshalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it would have pleased you well. 8Now therefore arise, go forth, and speak to the heart of your servants; for I swear by יהוה , if you do not go forth, there will not tarry a man with you this night; and that will be worse unto you than all the evil that has befallen you from your youth until now.”
9Then HaMelekh arose, and sat in the gate. And they told unto all the people, saying, “Behold, HaMelekh sits in the gate”; and all the people came before HaMelekh. Now Yisra’el had fled every man to his tent.
10And all the people were at strife throughout all the tribes of Yisra’el, saying, “HaMelekh delivered us out of the hand of our enemies, and he saved us out of the hand of the P’lishtim; and now he is fled out of the land from Avshalom. 11And Avshalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now, therefore, why do you speak not a word of bringing HaMelekh back?”
12And Melekh David sent to Tzadok and to Evyatar the kohanim, saying, “Speak unto the Z’kenim of Yehudah, saying, ‘Why are you the last to bring HaMelekh back to his house?’ –For the speech of all Yisra’el was come to HaMelekh, to bring him to his house.– 13‘You are my brethren, You are my bone and my flesh; why, then, should you be the last to bring back HaMelekh?’ 14And say you to Amasa, ‘Are you not my bone and my flesh? Elohim do so to me, and more also, if you are not captain of the host before me continually in the room of Yo’av’.” 15And he bowed the heart of all the men of Yehudah, even as the heart of one man; so that they sent unto HaMelekh, “Return, you and all your servants.” 16So HaMelekh returned, and came to the Yarden. And Yehudah came to Gilgal, to go to meet HaMelekh, to bring HaMelekh over the Yarden.
17And Shimi Ben Gera, the Ben Hayemini, who was of Bakhurim, made haste and came down with the men of Yehudah to meet Melekh David. 18And there were a thousand men of Binyamin with him, and Tzivah the servant of Beit Sha’ul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him. And they rushed into the Yarden before HaMelekh.
19And the ferryboat passed to and fro to bring over the king’s household, and to do what he thought good. And Shimi Ben Gera fell down before HaMelekh, when he would go over the Yarden. 20And he said unto HaMelekh, “Let not my Adon impute iniquity unto me, neither remember that which your servant did iniquitously the day that my Adon HaMelekh went out of Yerushalayim, that HaMelekh should take it to his heart. 21For your servant knows that I have sinned; therefore, behold, I am come this day the first of all Beit Yosef to go down to meet my Adon HaMelekh.”
22But Avishai Ben Tz’ru-Yah answered and said, “Shall not Shimi be put to death for this, because he cursed the anointed of יהוה ?”
23And David said, “What have I to do with you, you sons of Tz’ru-Yah, that you should this day be adversaries unto me? Shall there any man be put to death this day in Yisra’el? For do not I know that I am this day Melekh over Yisra’el?” 24And HaMelekh said unto Shimi, “You shall not die.” And HaMelekh swore unto him.
25And Mefivoshet Ben Sha’ul came down to meet HaMelekh; and he had neither dressed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day HaMelekh departed until the day he came home in shalom. 26And it came to pass, when he was come to Yerushalayim to meet HaMelekh, that HaMelekh said unto him, “Why did you not go with me, Mefivoshet?” 27And he answered, “My Adon, O Melekh, my servant deceived me; for your servant said, ‘I will saddle me a donkey, that I may ride thereon, and go with HaMelekh’; because your servant is lame. 28And he has slandered your servant unto my Adon HaMelekh; but my Adon HaMelekh is as a messenger of Elohim; do therefore what is good in your eyes. 29For all my father’s house were deserving of death at the hand of my Adon HaMelekh; yet did you set your servant among them that did eat at your own table. What right therefore have I yet? Or why should I cry any more unto HaMelekh?”
30And HaMelekh said unto him, “Why do you speak any more of your matters? I say, you and Tzivah divide the land.” 31And Mefivoshet said unto HaMelekh, “Yes, let him take all, forasmuch as my Adon HaMelekh is come in shalom unto his own house.”
32And Barzilai the Giladi came down from Rog’lim; and he passed on to the Yarden with HaMelekh, to bring him on the way over the Yarden. 33Now Barzilai was a very aged man, even eighty years old; and he had provided HaMelekh with sustenance while he lay at Makhanayim; for he was a very great man. 34And HaMelekh said unto Barzilai, “Come over with me, and I will sustain you with me in Yerushalayim.” 35And Barzillai said unto HaMelekh, “How many are the days of the years of my life, that I should go up with HaMelekh unto Yerushalayim? 36I am this day eighty years old; can I discern between good and bad? Can your servant taste what I eat or what I drink? Can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? Why, then, should your servant be yet a burden unto my Adon HaMelekh? 37Your servant would but just go over the Yarden with HaMelekh; and why should HaMelekh recompense it me with such a reward? 38Let your servant, I pray, turn back, that I may die in my own city, by the grave of my father and my mother. But behold your servant Khimham; let him go over with my Adon HaMelekh; and do to him what shall seem good unto you.” 39And HaMelekh answered, “Khimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall seem good unto you; and whatever you shall require of me, that will I do for you.” 40And all the people went over the Yarden, and HaMelekh went over; and HaMelekh kissed Barzilai, and blessed him; and he returned unto his own place.
41So HaMelekh went over to Gilgal, and Khimham went over with him; and all the people of Yehudah brought HaMelekh over, and also half the people of Yisra’el.
42And, behold, all the men of Yisra’el came to HaMelekh, and said unto HaMelekh, “Why have our brethren the men of Yehudah stolen you away, and brought HaMelekh, and his household, over the Yarden, and all David’s men with him?” 43And all the men of Yehudah answered the men of Yisra’el, “Because HaMelekh is near of kin to us; why then are you angry for this matter? Have we eaten at all at the cost of HaMelekh? Or has any gift been given us?” 44And the men of Yisra’el answered the men of Yehudah, and said, “We have ten parts in HaMelekh, and we have also more right in David than you; why then did you despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our Melekh?” And the words of the men of Yehudah were fiercer than the words of the men of Yisra’el.
אוַיִּרְגַּז הַמֶּלֶךְ וַיַּעַל עַל עֲלִיַּת הַשַּׁעַר וַיֵּבְךְּ; וְכֹה אָמַר בְּלֶכְתּוֹ בְּנִי אַבְשָׁלוֹם בְּנִי בְנִי אַבְשָׁלוֹם מִי יִתֵּן מוּתִי אֲנִי תַחְתֶּיךָ אַבְשָׁלוֹם בְּנִי בְנִי. בוַיֻּגַּד לְיוֹאָב: הִנֵּה הַמֶּלֶךְ בֹּכֶה וַיִּתְאַבֵּל עַל אַבְשָׁלוֹם. גוַתְּהִי הַתְּשֻׁעָה בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא לְאֵבֶל לְכָל הָעָם: כִּי שָׁמַע הָעָם בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא לֵאמֹר נֶעֱצַב הַמֶּלֶךְ עַל בְּנוֹ. דוַיִּתְגַּנֵּב הָעָם בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא לָבוֹא הָעִיר: כַּאֲשֶׁר יִתְגַּנֵּב הָעָם הַנִּכְלָמִים בְּנוּסָם בַּמִּלְחָמָה. הוְהַמֶּלֶךְ לָאַט אֶת פָּנָיו וַיִּזְעַק הַמֶּלֶךְ קוֹל גָּדוֹל: בְּנִי אַבְשָׁלוֹם אַבְשָׁלוֹם בְּנִי בְנִי.
ווַיָּבֹא יוֹאָב אֶל הַמֶּלֶךְ הַבָּיִת; וַיֹּאמֶר הֹבַשְׁתָּ הַיּוֹם אֶת פְּנֵי כָל עֲבָדֶיךָ הַמְמַלְּטִים אֶת נַפְשְׁךָ הַיּוֹם וְאֵת נֶפֶשׁ בָּנֶיךָ וּבְנֹתֶיךָ וְנֶפֶשׁ נָשֶׁיךָ וְנֶפֶשׁ פִּלַגְשֶׁיךָ. זלְאַהֲבָה אֶת שֹׂנְאֶיךָ וְלִשְׂנֹא אֶת אֹהֲבֶיךָ: כִּי הִגַּדְתָּ הַיּוֹם כִּי אֵין לְךָ שָׂרִים וַעֲבָדִים כִּי יָדַעְתִּי הַיּוֹם כִּי לא (לוּא) אַבְשָׁלוֹם חַי וְכֻלָּנוּ הַיּוֹם מֵתִים כִּי אָז יָשָׁר בְּעֵינֶיךָ. חוְעַתָּה קוּם צֵא וְדַבֵּר עַל לֵב עֲבָדֶיךָ: כִּי בַיהוה נִשְׁבַּעְתִּי כִּי אֵינְךָ יוֹצֵא אִם יָלִין אִישׁ אִתְּךָ הַלַּיְלָה וְרָעָה לְךָ זֹאת מִכָּל הָרָעָה אֲשֶׁר בָּאָה עָלֶיךָ מִנְּעֻרֶיךָ עַד עָתָּה.
טוַיָּקָם הַמֶּלֶךְ וַיֵּשֶׁב בַּשָּׁעַר; וּלְכָל הָעָם הִגִּידוּ לֵאמֹר הִנֵּה הַמֶּלֶךְ יוֹשֵׁב בַּשַּׁעַר וַיָּבֹא כָל הָעָם לִפְנֵי הַמֶּלֶךְ וְיִשְׂרָאֵל נָס אִישׁ לְאֹהָלָיו.
יוַיְהִי כָל הָעָם נָדוֹן בְּכָל שִׁבְטֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לֵאמֹר: הַמֶּלֶךְ הִצִּילָנוּ מִכַּף אֹיְבֵינוּ וְהוּא מִלְּטָנוּ מִכַּף פְּלִשְׁתִּים וְעַתָּה בָּרַח מִן הָאָרֶץ מֵעַל אַבְשָׁלוֹם. יאוְאַבְשָׁלוֹם אֲשֶׁר מָשַׁחְנוּ עָלֵינוּ מֵת בַּמִּלְחָמָה; וְעַתָּה לָמָה אַתֶּם מַחֲרִשִׁים לְהָשִׁיב אֶת הַמֶּלֶךְ.
יבוְהַמֶּלֶךְ דָּוִד שָׁלַח אֶל צָדוֹק וְאֶל אֶבְיָתָר הַכֹּהֲנִים לֵאמֹר דַּבְּרוּ אֶל זִקְנֵי יְהוּדָה לֵאמֹר לָמָּה תִהְיוּ אַחֲרֹנִים לְהָשִׁיב אֶת הַמֶּלֶךְ אֶל בֵּיתוֹ; וּדְבַר כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל בָּא אֶל הַמֶּלֶךְ אֶל בֵּיתוֹ. יגאַחַי אַתֶּם עַצְמִי וּבְשָׂרִי אַתֶּם; וְלָמָּה תִהְיוּ אַחֲרֹנִים לְהָשִׁיב אֶת הַמֶּלֶךְ. ידוְלַעֲמָשָׂא תֹּמְרוּ הֲלוֹא עַצְמִי וּבְשָׂרִי אָתָּה; כֹּהיַעֲשֶׂה לִּי אֱלֹהִים וְכֹה יוֹסִיף אִם לֹא שַׂר צָבָא תִּהְיֶה לְפָנַי כָּל הַיָּמִים תַּחַת יוֹאָב. טווַיַּט אֶת לְבַב כָּל אִישׁ יְהוּדָה כְּאִישׁ אֶחָד; וַיִּשְׁלְחוּ אֶל הַמֶּלֶךְ שׁוּב אַתָּה וְכָל עֲבָדֶיךָ. טזוַיָּשָׁב הַמֶּלֶךְ וַיָּבֹא עַד הַיַּרְדֵּן; וִיהוּדָה בָּא הַגִּלְגָּלָה לָלֶכֶת לִקְרַאת הַמֶּלֶךְ לְהַעֲבִיר אֶת הַמֶּלֶךְ אֶת הַיַּרְדֵּן.
יזוַיְמַהֵר שִׁמְעִי בֶן גֵּרָא בֶּן הַיְמִינִי אֲשֶׁר מִבַּחוּרִים; וַיֵּרֶד עִם אִישׁ יְהוּדָה לִקְרַאת הַמֶּלֶךְ דָּוִד. יחוְאֶלֶף אִישׁ עִמּוֹ מִבִּנְיָמִן וְצִיבָא נַעַר בֵּית שָׁאוּל וַחֲמֵשֶׁת עָשָׂר בָּנָיו וְעֶשְׂרִים עֲבָדָיו אִתּוֹ; וְצָלְחוּ הַיַּרְדֵּן לִפְנֵי הַמֶּלֶךְ.
יטוְעָבְרָה הָעֲבָרָה לַעֲבִיר אֶת בֵּית הַמֶּלֶךְ וְלַעֲשׂוֹת הַטּוֹב בְּעֵינָו; וְשִׁמְעִי בֶן גֵּרָא נָפַל לִפְנֵי הַמֶּלֶךְ בְּעָבְרוֹ בַּיַּרְדֵּן. כוַיֹּאמֶר אֶל הַמֶּלֶךְ אַל יַחֲשָׁב לִי אֲדֹנִי עָוֹן וְאַל תִּזְכֹּר אֵת אֲשֶׁר הֶעֱוָה עַבְדְּךָ בַּיּוֹם אֲשֶׁר יָצָא אֲדֹנִי הַמֶּלֶךְ מִירוּשָׁלִָם לָשׂוּם הַמֶּלֶךְ אֶל לִבּוֹ. כאכִּי יָדַע עַבְדְּךָ כִּי אֲנִי חָטָאתִי; וְהִנֵּה בָאתִי הַיּוֹם רִאשׁוֹן לְכָל בֵּית יוֹסֵף לָרֶדֶת לִקְרַאת אֲדֹנִי הַמֶּלֶךְ.
כבוַיַּעַן אֲבִישַׁי בֶּן צְרוּיָה וַיֹּאמֶר הֲתַחַת זֹאת לֹא יוּמַת שִׁמְעִי: כִּי קִלֵּל אֶת מְשִׁיחַ יהוה .
כגוַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִד מַה לִּי וְלָכֶם בְּנֵי צְרוּיָה כִּי תִהְיוּ לִי הַיּוֹם לְשָׂטָן; הַיּוֹם יוּמַת אִישׁ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל כִּי הֲלוֹא יָדַעְתִּי כִּי הַיּוֹם אֲנִי מֶלֶךְ עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל. כדוַיֹּאמֶר הַמֶּלֶךְ אֶל שִׁמְעִי לֹא תָמוּת; וַיִּשָּׁבַע לוֹ הַמֶּלֶךְ.
כהוּמְפִבֹשֶׁת בֶּן שָׁאוּל יָרַד לִקְרַאת הַמֶּלֶךְ; וְלֹא עָשָׂה רַגְלָיו וְלֹא עָשָׂה שְׂפָמוֹ וְאֶת בְּגָדָיו לֹא כִבֵּס לְמִן הַיּוֹם לֶכֶת הַמֶּלֶךְ עַד הַיּוֹם אֲשֶׁר בָּא בְשָׁלוֹם. כווַיְהִי כִּי בָא יְרוּשָׁלִַם לִקְרַאת הַמֶּלֶךְ; וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ הַמֶּלֶךְ לָמָּה לֹא הָלַכְתָּ עִמִּי מְפִיבֹשֶׁת. כזוַיֹּאמַר אֲדֹנִי הַמֶּלֶךְ עַבְדִּי רִמָּנִי: כִּי אָמַר עַבְדְּךָ אֶחְבְּשָׁה לִּי הַחֲמוֹר וְאֶרְכַּב עָלֶיהָ וְאֵלֵךְ אֶת הַמֶּלֶךְ כִּי פִסֵּחַ עַבְדֶּךָ. כחוַיְרַגֵּל בְּעַבְדְּךָ אֶל אֲדֹנִי הַמֶּלֶךְ; וַאדֹנִי הַמֶּלֶךְ כְּמַלְאַךְ הָאֱלֹהִים וַעֲשֵׂה הַטּוֹב בְּעֵינֶיךָ. כטכִּי לֹא הָיָה כָּל בֵּית אָבִי כִּי אִם אַנְשֵׁי מָוֶת לַאדֹנִי הַמֶּלֶךְ וַתָּשֶׁת אֶת עַבְדְּךָ בְּאֹכְלֵי שֻׁלְחָנֶךָ; וּמַה יֶּשׁ לִי עוֹד צְדָקָה וְלִזְעֹק עוֹד אֶל הַמֶּלֶךְ.
לוַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ הַמֶּלֶךְ לָמָּה תְּדַבֵּר עוֹד דְּבָרֶיךָ; אָמַרְתִּי אַתָּה וְצִיבָא תַּחְלְקוּ אֶת הַשָּׂדֶה. לאוַיֹּאמֶר מְפִיבֹשֶׁת אֶל הַמֶּלֶךְ גַּם אֶת הַכֹּל יִקָּח: אַחֲרֵי אֲשֶׁר בָּא אֲדֹנִי הַמֶּלֶךְ בְּשָׁלוֹם אֶל בֵּיתוֹ.
לבוּבַרְזִלַּי הַגִּלְעָדִי יָרַד מֵרֹגְלִים; וַיַּעֲבֹר אֶת הַמֶּלֶךְ הַיַּרְדֵּן לְשַׁלְּחוֹ אֶת בירדן (הַיַּרְדֵּן). לגוּבַרְזִלַּי זָקֵן מְאֹד בֶּן שְׁמֹנִים שָׁנָה; וְהוּא כִלְכַּל אֶת הַמֶּלֶךְ בְשִׁיבָתוֹ בְמַחֲנַיִם כִּי אִישׁ גָּדוֹל הוּא מְאֹד. לדוַיֹּאמֶר הַמֶּלֶךְ אֶל בַּרְזִלָּי: אַתָּה עֲבֹר אִתִּי וְכִלְכַּלְתִּי אֹתְךָ עִמָּדִי בִּירוּשָׁלִָם. להוַיֹּאמֶר בַּרְזִלַּי אֶל הַמֶּלֶךְ: כַּמָּה יְמֵי שְׁנֵי חַיַּי כִּי אֶעֱלֶה אֶת הַמֶּלֶךְ יְרוּשָׁלִָם. לובֶּן שְׁמֹנִים שָׁנָה אָנֹכִי הַיּוֹם הַאֵדַע בֵּין טוֹב לְרָע אִם יִטְעַם עַבְדְּךָ אֶת אֲשֶׁר אֹכַל וְאֶת אֲשֶׁר אֶשְׁתֶּה אִם אֶשְׁמַע עוֹד בְּקוֹל שָׁרִים וְשָׁרוֹת; וְלָמָּה יִהְיֶה עַבְדְּךָ עוֹד לְמַשָּׂא אֶל אֲדֹנִי הַמֶּלֶךְ. לזכִּמְעַט יַעֲבֹר עַבְדְּךָ אֶת הַיַּרְדֵּן אֶת הַמֶּלֶךְ; וְלָמָּה יִגְמְלֵנִי הַמֶּלֶךְ הַגְּמוּלָה הַזֹּאת. לחיָשָׁב נָא עַבְדְּךָ וְאָמֻת בְּעִירִי עִם קֶבֶר אָבִי וְאִמִּי; וְהִנֵּה עַבְדְּךָ כִמְהָם יַעֲבֹר עִם אֲדֹנִי הַמֶּלֶךְ וַעֲשֵׂה לוֹ אֵת אֲשֶׁר טוֹב בְּעֵינֶיךָ. לטוַיֹּאמֶר הַמֶּלֶךְ אִתִּי יַעֲבֹר כִּמְהָם וַאֲנִי אֶעֱשֶׂה לּוֹ אֶת הַטּוֹב בְּעֵינֶיךָ; וְכֹל אֲשֶׁר תִּבְחַר עָלַי אֶעֱשֶׂה לָּךְ. מוַיַּעֲבֹר כָּל הָעָם אֶת הַיַּרְדֵּן וְהַמֶּלֶךְ עָבָר; וַיִּשַּׁק הַמֶּלֶךְ לְבַרְזִלַּי וַיְבָרְכֵהוּ וַיָּשָׁב לִמְקֹמוֹ.
מאוַיַּעֲבֹר הַמֶּלֶךְ הַגִּלְגָּלָה וְכִמְהָן עָבַר עִמּוֹ; וְכָל עַם יְהוּדָה ויעברו (הֶעֱבִרוּ) אֶת הַמֶּלֶךְ וְגַם חֲצִי עַם יִשְׂרָאֵל.
מבוְהִנֵּה כָּל אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל בָּאִים אֶל הַמֶּלֶךְ; וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֶל הַמֶּלֶךְ מַדּוּעַ גְּנָבוּךָ אַחֵינוּ אִישׁ יְהוּדָה וַיַּעֲבִרוּ אֶת הַמֶּלֶךְ וְאֶת בֵּיתוֹ אֶת הַיַּרְדֵּן וְכָל אַנְשֵׁי דָוִד עִמּוֹ. מגוַיַּעַן כָּל אִישׁ יְהוּדָה עַל אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל כִּי קָרוֹב הַמֶּלֶךְ אֵלַי וְלָמָּה זֶּה חָרָה לְךָ עַל הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה: הֶאָכוֹל אָכַלְנוּ מִן הַמֶּלֶךְ אִם נִשֵּׂאת נִשָּׂא לָנוּ. מדוַיַּעַן אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת אִישׁ יְהוּדָה וַיֹּאמֶר עֶשֶׂר יָדוֹת לִי בַמֶּלֶךְ וְגַם בְּדָוִד אֲנִי מִמְּךָ וּמַדּוּעַ הֱקִלֹּתַנִי וְלֹא הָיָה דְבָרִי רִאשׁוֹן לִי לְהָשִׁיב אֶת מַלְכִּי; וַיִּקֶשׁ דְּבַר אִישׁ יְהוּדָה מִדְּבַר אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל.
