1And there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David sought the face of יהוה . And יהוה said, “It is for Sha’ul, and for his bloody house, because he put to death the Givonim.”
2And HaMelekh called the Givonim, and said unto them–now the Givonim were not of B’nei Yisra’el, but of the remnant of the Amori; and B’nei Yisra’el had sworn unto them; and Sha’ul sought to slay them in his zeal for B’nei Yisra’el and Yehudah– 3and David said unto the Givonim, “What shall I do for you? And how shall I make atonement, that you may bless the inheritance of יהוה ?” And4 the Givonim said unto him, “It is no matter of silver or gold between us and Sha’ul, or his house; neither is it for us to put any man to death in Yisra’el.” And he said, “What say you that I should do for you?” 5And they said unto HaMelekh, “The man that consumed us, and that devised against us, so that we have been destroyed from remaining in any of the borders of Yisra’el, 6let seven men of his sons be delivered unto us, and we will hang them up unto יהוה in Givat Sha’ul, the chosen of יהוה .”
And HaMelekh said, “I will deliver them.” 7But HaMelekh spared Mefivoshet, Ben Yehonatan Ben Sha’ul, because of the oath of יהוה that was between them, between David and Yehonatan Ben Sha’ul. 8But HaMelekh took the two sons of Ritzpah Bat Aiyah, whom she bore unto Sha’ul, Armoni and Mefivoshet; and the five sons of Mikhal Bat Sha’ul, whom she bore to Adri’el Ben Barzilai the Mekholati; 9and he delivered them into the hands of the Givonim, and they hanged them in the mountain before יהוה , and they fell all seven together; and they were put to death in the days of harvest, in the first days, at the beginning of barley harvest.
10And Ritzpah Bat Aiyah took sackcloth, and spread it for her upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water was poured upon them from heaven; and she suffered neither the birds of the air to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night. 11And it was told David what Ritzpah Bat Aiyah, the concubine of Sha’ul, had done. 12And David went and took the bones of Sha’ul and the bones of Yehonatan his son from the men of Yavesh Gilad, who had stolen them from the broad place of Beit She’an, where the P’lishtim had hanged them, in the day that the P’lishtim slew Sha’ul in Gilbo’a; 13and he brought up from there the bones of Sha’ul and the bones of Yehonatan his son; and they gathered the bones of them that were hanged. 14And they buried the bones of Sha’ul and Yehonatan his son in the country of Binyamin in Tzelah, in the tomb of Kish his father; and they performed all that HaMelekh commanded. And after that Elohim was entreated for the land.
15And the P’lishtim had war again with Yisra’el; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the P’lishtim; and David waxed faint. 16And Ishbi Benov, who was of the sons of the Rafah, the weight of whose spear was three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being girded with new armor, thought to have slain David. 17But Avishai Ben Tzru’Yah succored him, and smote the P’lishtim, and killed him. Then the men of David swore unto him, saying, “You shall go no more out with us to battle, that you quench not the lamp of Yisra’el.”
18And it came to pass after this, that there was again war with the P’lishtim at Gov; then Sibekhai the Khushati slew Saf, who was of the sons of the Rafah. 19And there was again war with the P’lishtim at Gov; and Elkhanan Ben Yarei Or’gim the Beit HaLakhmi slew Golyat the Giti, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.
20And there was again war at Gat, where was a champion, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the Rafah. 21And when he taunted Yisra’el, Yehonatan Ben Shima David’s brother slew him. 22These four were born to the Rafah in Gat; and they fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.
אוַיְהִי רָעָב בִּימֵי דָוִד שָׁלֹשׁ שָׁנִים שָׁנָה אַחֲרֵי שָׁנָה וַיְבַקֵּשׁ דָּוִד אֶת פְּנֵי יהוה ; וַיֹּאמֶר יהוה אֶל שָׁאוּל וְאֶל בֵּית הַדָּמִים עַל אֲשֶׁר הֵמִית אֶת הַגִּבְעֹנִים.
בוַיִּקְרָא הַמֶּלֶךְ לַגִּבְעֹנִים וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם: וְהַגִּבְעֹנִים לֹא מִבְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל הֵמָּה כִּי אִם מִיֶּתֶר הָאֱמֹרִי וּבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל נִשְׁבְּעוּ לָהֶם וַיְבַקֵּשׁ שָׁאוּל לְהַכֹּתָם בְּקַנֹּאתוֹ לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וִיהוּדָה. גוַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִד אֶל הַגִּבְעֹנִים מָה אֶעֱשֶׂה לָכֶם; וּבַמָּה אֲכַפֵּר וּבָרְכוּ אֶת נַחֲלַת יהוה . דוַיֹּאמְרוּ לוֹ הַגִּבְעֹנִים אֵין לי (לָנוּ) כֶּסֶף וְזָהָב עִם שָׁאוּל וְעִם בֵּיתוֹ וְאֵין לָנוּ אִישׁ לְהָמִית בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיֹּאמֶר מָה אַתֶּם אֹמְרִים אֶעֱשֶׂה לָכֶם. הוַיֹּאמְרוּ אֶל הַמֶּלֶךְ הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר כִּלָּנוּ וַאֲשֶׁר דִּמָּה לָנוּ; נִשְׁמַדְנוּ מֵהִתְיַצֵּב בְּכָל גְּבֻל יִשְׂרָאֵל. וינתן (יֻתַּן) לָנוּ שִׁבְעָה אֲנָשִׁים מִבָּנָיו וְהוֹקַעֲנוּם לַיהוה בְּגִבְעַת שָׁאוּל בְּחִיר יהוה .
וַיֹּאמֶר הַמֶּלֶךְ אֲנִי אֶתֵּן. זוַיַּחְמֹל הַמֶּלֶךְ עַל מְפִיבֹשֶׁת בֶּן יְהוֹנָתָן בֶּן שָׁאוּל; עַל שְׁבֻעַת יהוה אֲשֶׁר בֵּינֹתָם בֵּין דָּוִד וּבֵין יְהוֹנָתָן בֶּן שָׁאוּל. חוַיִּקַּח הַמֶּלֶךְ אֶת שְׁנֵי בְּנֵי רִצְפָּה בַת אַיָּה אֲשֶׁר יָלְדָה לְשָׁאוּל אֶת אַרְמֹנִי וְאֶת מְפִבֹשֶׁת; וְאֶת חֲמֵשֶׁת בְּנֵי מִיכַל בַּת שָׁאוּל אֲשֶׁר יָלְדָה לְעַדְרִיאֵל בֶּן בַּרְזִלַּי הַמְּחֹלָתִי. טוַיִּתְּנֵם בְּיַד הַגִּבְעֹנִים וַיֹּקִיעֻם בָּהָר לִפְנֵי יהוה וַיִּפְּלוּ שבעתים (שְׁבַעְתָּם) יָחַד; והם (וְהֵמָּה) הֻמְתוּ בִּימֵי קָצִיר בָּרִאשֹׁנִים תחלת (בִּתְחִלַּת) קְצִיר שְׂעֹרִים.
יוַתִּקַּח רִצְפָּה בַת אַיָּה אֶת הַשַּׂק וַתַּטֵּהוּ לָהּ אֶל הַצּוּר מִתְּחִלַּת קָצִיר עַד נִתַּךְ מַיִם עֲלֵיהֶם מִן הַשָּׁמָיִם; וְלֹא נָתְנָה עוֹף הַשָּׁמַיִם לָנוּחַ עֲלֵיהֶם יוֹמָם וְאֶת חַיַּת הַשָּׂדֶה לָיְלָה. יאוַיֻּגַּד לְדָוִד אֵת אֲשֶׁר עָשְׂתָה רִצְפָּה בַת אַיָּה פִּלֶגֶשׁ שָׁאוּל. יבוַיֵּלֶךְ דָּוִד וַיִּקַּח אֶת עַצְמוֹת שָׁאוּל וְאֶת עַצְמוֹת יְהוֹנָתָן בְּנוֹ מֵאֵת בַּעֲלֵי יָבֵישׁ גִּלְעָד אֲשֶׁר גָּנְבוּ אֹתָם מֵרְחֹב בֵּית שַׁן אֲשֶׁר תלום (תְּלָאוּם) שם הפלשתים (שָׁמָּה פְּלִשְׁתִּים) בְּיוֹם הַכּוֹת פְּלִשְׁתִּים אֶת שָׁאוּל בַּגִּלְבֹּעַ. יגוַיַּעַל מִשָּׁם אֶת עַצְמוֹת שָׁאוּל וְאֶת עַצְמוֹת יְהוֹנָתָן בְּנוֹ; וַיַּאַסְפוּ אֶת עַצְמוֹת הַמּוּקָעִים. ידוַיִּקְבְּרוּ אֶת עַצְמוֹת שָׁאוּל וִיהוֹנָתָן בְּנוֹ בְּאֶרֶץ בִּנְיָמִן בְּצֵלָע בְּקֶבֶר קִישׁ אָבִיו וַיַּעֲשׂוּ כֹּל אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה הַמֶּלֶךְ; וַיֵּעָתֵר אֱלֹהִים לָאָרֶץ אַחֲרֵי כֵן.
טווַתְּהִי עוֹד מִלְחָמָה לַפְּלִשְׁתִּים אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיֵּרֶד דָּוִד וַעֲבָדָיו עִמּוֹ וַיִּלָּחֲמוּ אֶת פְּלִשְׁתִּים וַיָּעַף דָּוִד. טזוישבו (וְיִשְׁבִּי) בְּנֹב אֲשֶׁר בִּילִידֵי הָרָפָה וּמִשְׁקַל קֵינוֹ שְׁלֹשׁ מֵאוֹת מִשְׁקַל נְחֹשֶׁת וְהוּא חָגוּר חֲדָשָׁה; וַיֹּאמֶר לְהַכּוֹת אֶת דָּוִד. יזוַיַּעֲזָר לוֹ אֲבִישַׁי בֶּן צְרוּיָה וַיַּךְ אֶת הַפְּלִשְׁתִּי וַיְמִתֵהוּ; אָז נִשְׁבְּעוּ אַנְשֵׁי דָוִד לוֹ לֵאמֹר, לֹא תֵצֵא עוֹד אִתָּנוּ לַמִּלְחָמָה וְלֹא תְכַבֶּה אֶת נֵר יִשְׂרָאֵל.
יחוַיְהִי אַחֲרֵי כֵן וַתְּהִי עוֹד הַמִּלְחָמָה בְּגוֹב עִם פְּלִשְׁתִּים; אָז הִכָּה סִבְּכַי הַחֻשָׁתִי אֶת סַף אֲשֶׁר בִּילִדֵי הָרָפָה. יטוַתְּהִי עוֹד הַמִּלְחָמָה בְּגוֹב עִם פְּלִשְׁתִּים; וַיַּךְ אֶלְחָנָן בֶּן יַעְרֵי אֹרְגִים בֵּית הַלַּחְמִי אֵת גָּלְיָת הַגִּתִּי וְעֵץ חֲנִיתוֹ כִּמְנוֹר אֹרְגִים.
כוַתְּהִי עוֹד מִלְחָמָה בְּגַת; וַיְהִי אִישׁ מדין (מָדוֹן) וְאֶצְבְּעֹת יָדָיו וְאֶצְבְּעֹת רַגְלָיו שֵׁשׁ וָשֵׁשׁ עֶשְׂרִים וְאַרְבַּע מִסְפָּר וְגַם הוּא יֻלַּד לְהָרָפָה. כאוַיְחָרֵף אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיַּכֵּהוּ יְהוֹנָתָן בֶּן שמעי (שִׁמְעָה) אֲחִי דָוִד. כבאֶת אַרְבַּעַת אֵלֶּה יֻלְּדוּ לְהָרָפָה בְּגַת; וַיִּפְּלוּ בְיַד דָּוִד וּבְיַד עֲבָדָיו.
