1Now there was long war between Beit Sha’ul and Beit David; and David waxed stronger and stronger, but Beit Sha’ul waxed weaker and weaker.
2And unto David sons were born in Khevron; and his firstborn was Amnon, of Akhino’am the Yizreilit; 3and his second, Khilav, of Aviga’il the wife of Naval the Karmeli; and the third, Avshalom the son of Ma’akhah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur; 4and the fourth, Adoni-Yah the son of Hagit; and the fifth, Shefat-Yah the son of Avital; 5and the sixth, Yitram, of Eglah David’s wife. These were born to David in Khevron.
6And it came to pass, while there was war between Beit Sha’ul and Beit David, that Avner showed himself strong in Beit Sha’ul. 7Now Sha’ul had a concubine, whose name was Ritzpah, the daughter of Ayah; and [Ish Boshet] said to Avner, “Why have you gone in unto my father’s concubine?” 8Then was Avner very wroth for the words of Ish Boshet, and said, “Am I a dog’s head that belongs to Yehudah? This day do I show kindness unto Beit Sha’ul your father, to his brethren, and to his friends, and have not delivered you into the hand of David, and yet you charge me this day with a fault concerning this woman. 9Elohim do so to Avner, and more also, if, as יהוה has sworn to David, I do not do also to him, 10to transfer the kingdom from Beit Sha’ul, and to set up the throne of David over Yisra’el and over Yehudah, from Dan even to Be’er Sheva.” 11And he could not answer Avner another word, because he feared him.
12And Avner sent messengers to David right away, saying, “Whose is the land?” saying also, “Make your league with me, and, behold, my hand shall be with you, to bring over all Yisra’el unto you.” 13And he said, “Well; I will make a league with you; but one thing I require of you, that is, you shall not see my face, except you first bring Mikhal, Sha’ul’s daughter, when you come to see my face.”
14And David sent messengers to Ish Boshet Ben Sha’ul, saying, “Deliver me my wife Mikhal, whom I betrothed to me for a hundred foreskins of the P’lishtim.” 15And Ish Boshet sent, and took her from her husband, even from Palti’el Ben Lush. 16And her husband went with her, weeping as he went, and followed her to Bakhurim. Then said Avner unto him, “Go, return”; and he returned. 17And Avner had communication with the elders of Yisra’el, saying, “In times past you sought for David to be Melekh over you; 18now then, do it; for יהוה has spoken of David, saying, ‘By the hand of My servant David I will save My people Yisra’el out of the hand of the P’lishtim, and out of the hand of all their enemies’.”
19And Avner also spoke in the ears of Binyamin; and Avner went also to speak in the ears of David in Khevron all that seemed good to Yisra’el, and to the whole house of Binyamin. 20So Avner came to David to Khevron, and twenty men with him. And David made Avner and the men that were with him a feast. 21And Avner said unto David, “I will arise and go, and will gather all Yisra’el unto my Adon HaMelekh, that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may reign over all that your soul desires.” And David sent Avner away; and he went in shalom. 22And, behold, the servants of David and Yo’av came from a foray, and brought in a great spoil with them; but Avner was not with David in Khevron; for he had sent him away, and he was gone in shalom. 23When Yo’av and all the host that was with him were come, they told Yo’av, saying, “Avner Ben Ner came to HaMelekh, and he has sent him away, and he is gone in shalom.” 24Then Yo’av came to HaMelekh, and said, “What have you done? Behold, Avner came unto you; why is it that you have sent him away, and he is quite gone? 25You know Avner Ben Ner, that he came to deceive you, and to know your going out and your coming in, and to know all that you do.”
26And when Yo’av was come out from David, he sent messengers after Avner, and they brought him back from Bor HaSirah; but David knew it not. 27And when Avner was returned to Khevron, Yo’av took him aside into the midst of the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there in the groin, that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother. 28And afterward, when David heard it, he said, “I and my kingdom are guiltless before יהוה forever from the blood of Avner Ben Ner; 29let it fall upon the head of Yo’av, and upon all his father’s house; and let there not fail from Beit Yo’av one that has an issue, or that is a leper, or that leans on a staff, or that falls by the sword, or that lacks bread.” 30So Yo’av and Abishai his brother slew Avner, because he had killed their brother Asahel at Givon in the battle.
31And David said to Yo’av, and to all the people that were with him, “Rend your clothes, and gird yourselves with sackcloth, and wail before Avner.” And Melekh David followed the bier. 32And they buried Avner in Khevron; and HaMelekh lifted up his voice, and wept at the grave of Avner; and all the people wept.
33And HaMelekh lamented for Avner, and said, “Should Avner die as a fool dies? 34Your hands were not bound, nor your feet put into fetters; as a man falls before the children of iniquity, so did you fall.” And all the people wept again over him. 35And all the people came to cause David to eat bread while it was yet day; but David swore, saying, “Elohim do so to me, and more also, if I taste bread, or anything else, until the sun is down.” 36And all the people took notice of it, and it pleased them; whatever HaMelekh did pleased all the people. 37So all the people and all Yisra’el understood that day that it was not of HaMelekh to slay Avner Ben Ner. 38And HaMelekh said unto his servants, “Do you not know that there is a prince and a great man fallen this day in Yisra’el? 39And I am this day weak, and just anointed Melekh; and these men the sons of Tzeru-Yah are too hard for me; may יהוה reward the evildoer according to his wickedness.”
אוַתְּהִי הַמִּלְחָמָה אֲרֻכָּה בֵּין בֵּית שָׁאוּל וּבֵין בֵּית דָּוִד; וְדָוִד הֹלֵךְ וְחָזֵק וּבֵית שָׁאוּל הֹלְכִים וְדַלִּים.
בוילדו (וַיִּוָּלְדוּ) לְדָוִד בָּנִים בְּחֶבְרוֹן; וַיְהִי בְכוֹרוֹ אַמְנוֹן לַאֲחִינֹעַם הַיִּזְרְעֵאלִת. גוּמִשְׁנֵהוּ כִלְאָב לאביגל (לַאֲבִיגַיִל) אֵשֶׁת נָבָל הַכַּרְמְלִי; וְהַשְּׁלִשִׁי אַבְשָׁלוֹם בֶּן מַעֲכָה בַּת תַּלְמַי מֶלֶךְ גְּשׁוּר. דוְהָרְבִיעִי אֲדֹנִיָּה בֶן חַגִּית; וְהַחֲמִישִׁי שְׁפַטְיָה בֶן אֲבִיטָל. הוְהַשִּׁשִּׁי יִתְרְעָם לְעֶגְלָה אֵשֶׁת דָּוִד; אֵלֶּה יֻלְּדוּ לְדָוִד בְּחֶבְרוֹן.
ווַיְהִי בִּהְיוֹת הַמִּלְחָמָה בֵּין בֵּית שָׁאוּל וּבֵין בֵּית דָּוִד; וְאַבְנֵר הָיָה מִתְחַזֵּק בְּבֵית שָׁאוּל. זוּלְשָׁאוּל פִּלֶגֶשׁ וּשְׁמָהּ רִצְפָּה בַת אַיָּה; וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל אַבְנֵר מַדּוּעַ בָּאתָה אֶל פִּילֶגֶשׁ אָבִי. חוַיִּחַר לְאַבְנֵר מְאֹד עַל דִּבְרֵי אִישׁ בֹּשֶׁת וַיֹּאמֶר הֲרֹאשׁ כֶּלֶב אָנֹכִי אֲשֶׁר לִיהוּדָה הַיּוֹם אֶעֱשֶׂה חֶסֶד עִם בֵּית שָׁאוּל אָבִיךָ אֶל אֶחָיו וְאֶל מֵרֵעֵהוּ וְלֹא הִמְצִיתִךָ בְּיַד דָּוִד; וַתִּפְקֹד עָלַי עֲוֹן הָאִשָּׁה הַיּוֹם. טכֹּה יַעֲשֶׂה אֱלֹהִים לְאַבְנֵר וְכֹה יֹסִיף לוֹ: כִּי כַּאֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע יהוה לְדָוִד כִּי כֵן אֶעֱשֶׂה לּוֹ. ילְהַעֲבִיר הַמַּמְלָכָה מִבֵּית שָׁאוּל; וּלְהָקִים אֶת כִּסֵּא דָוִד עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל וְעַל יְהוּדָה מִדָּן וְעַד בְּאֵר שָׁבַע. יאוְלֹא יָכֹל עוֹד לְהָשִׁיב אֶת אַבְנֵר דָּבָר מִיִּרְאָתוֹ אֹתוֹ.
יבוַיִּשְׁלַח אַבְנֵר מַלְאָכִים אֶל דָּוִד תַּחְתָּו לֵאמֹר לְמִי אָרֶץ: לֵאמֹר כָּרְתָה בְרִיתְךָ אִתִּי וְהִנֵּה יָדִי עִמָּךְ לְהָסֵב אֵלֶיךָ אֶת כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל. יגוַיֹּאמֶר טוֹב אֲנִי אֶכְרֹת אִתְּךָ בְּרִית: אַךְ דָּבָר אֶחָד אָנֹכִי שֹׁאֵל מֵאִתְּךָ לֵאמֹר לֹא תִרְאֶה אֶת פָּנַי כִּי אִם לִפְנֵי הֱבִיאֲךָ אֵת מִיכַל בַּת שָׁאוּל בְּבֹאֲךָ לִרְאוֹת אֶת פָּנָי.
ידוַיִּשְׁלַח דָּוִד מַלְאָכִים אֶל אִישׁ בֹּשֶׁת בֶּן שָׁאוּל לֵאמֹר: תְּנָה אֶת אִשְׁתִּי אֶת מִיכַל אֲשֶׁר אֵרַשְׂתִּי לִי בְּמֵאָה עָרְלוֹת פְּלִשְׁתִּים. טווַיִּשְׁלַח אִישׁ בֹּשֶׁת וַיִּקָּחֶהָ מֵעִם אִישׁ מֵעִם פַּלְטִיאֵל בֶּן לוש (לָיִשׁ). טזוַיֵּלֶךְ אִתָּהּ אִישָׁהּ הָלוֹךְ וּבָכֹה אַחֲרֶיהָ עַד בַּחֻרִים; וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו אַבְנֵר לֵךְ שׁוּב וַיָּשֹׁב. יזוּדְבַר אַבְנֵר הָיָה עִם זִקְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לֵאמֹר: גַּם תְּמוֹל גַּם שִׁלְשֹׁם הֱיִיתֶם מְבַקְשִׁים אֶת דָּוִד לְמֶלֶךְ עֲלֵיכֶם. יחוְעַתָּה עֲשׂוּ: כִּי יהוה אָמַר אֶל דָּוִד לֵאמֹר בְּיַד דָּוִד עַבְדִּי הוֹשִׁיעַ אֶת עַמִּי יִשְׂרָאֵל מִיַּד פְּלִשְׁתִּים וּמִיַּד כָּל אֹיְבֵיהֶם.
יטוַיְדַבֵּר גַּם אַבְנֵר בְּאָזְנֵי בִנְיָמִין; וַיֵּלֶךְ גַּם אַבְנֵר לְדַבֵּר בְּאָזְנֵי דָוִד בְּחֶבְרוֹן אֵת כָּל אֲשֶׁר טוֹב בְּעֵינֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וּבְעֵינֵי כָּל בֵּית בִּנְיָמִן. כוַיָּבֹא אַבְנֵר אֶל דָּוִד חֶבְרוֹן וְאִתּוֹ עֶשְׂרִים אֲנָשִׁים; וַיַּעַשׂ דָּוִד לְאַבְנֵר וְלַאֲנָשִׁים אֲשֶׁר אִתּוֹ מִשְׁתֶּה. כאוַיֹּאמֶר אַבְנֵר אֶל דָּוִד אָקוּמָה וְאֵלֵכָה וְאֶקְבְּצָה אֶל אֲדֹנִי הַמֶּלֶךְ אֶת כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל וְיִכְרְתוּ אִתְּךָ בְּרִית וּמָלַכְתָּ בְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר תְּאַוֶּה נַפְשֶׁךָ; וַיְשַׁלַּח דָּוִד אֶת אַבְנֵר וַיֵּלֶךְ בְּשָׁלוֹם. כבוְהִנֵּה עַבְדֵי דָוִד וְיוֹאָב בָּא מֵהַגְּדוּד וְשָׁלָל רָב עִמָּם הֵבִיאוּ; וְאַבְנֵר אֵינֶנּוּ עִם דָּוִד בְּחֶבְרוֹן כִּי שִׁלְּחוֹ וַיֵּלֶךְ בְּשָׁלוֹם. כגוְיוֹאָב וְכָל הַצָּבָא אֲשֶׁר אִתּוֹ בָּאוּ; וַיַּגִּדוּ לְיוֹאָב לֵאמֹר בָּא אַבְנֵר בֶּן נֵר אֶל הַמֶּלֶךְ וַיְשַׁלְּחֵהוּ וַיֵּלֶךְ בְּשָׁלוֹם. כדוַיָּבֹא יוֹאָב אֶל הַמֶּלֶךְ וַיֹּאמֶר מֶה עָשִׂיתָה: הִנֵּה בָא אַבְנֵר אֵלֶיךָ לָמָּה זֶּה שִׁלַּחְתּוֹ וַיֵּלֶךְ הָלוֹךְ. כהיָדַעְתָּ אֶת אַבְנֵר בֶּן נֵר כִּי לְפַתֹּתְךָ בָּא; וְלָדַעַת אֶת מוֹצָאֲךָ וְאֶת מבואך (מוֹבָאֶךָ) וְלָדַעַת אֵת כָּל אֲשֶׁר אַתָּה עֹשֶׂה.
כווַיֵּצֵא יוֹאָב מֵעִם דָּוִד וַיִּשְׁלַח מַלְאָכִים אַחֲרֵי אַבְנֵר וַיָּשִׁבוּ אֹתוֹ מִבּוֹר הַסִּרָה; וְדָוִד לֹא יָדָע. כזוַיָּשָׁב אַבְנֵר חֶבְרוֹן וַיַּטֵּהוּ יוֹאָב אֶל תּוֹךְ הַשַּׁעַר לְדַבֵּר אִתּוֹ בַּשֶּׁלִי; וַיַּכֵּהוּ שָׁם הַחֹמֶשׁ וַיָּמָת בְּדַם עֲשָׂהאֵל אָחִיו. כחוַיִּשְׁמַע דָּוִד מֵאַחֲרֵי כֵן וַיֹּאמֶר נָקִי אָנֹכִי וּמַמְלַכְתִּי מֵעִם יהוה עַד עוֹלָם מִדְּמֵי אַבְנֵר בֶּן נֵר. כטיָחֻלוּ עַל רֹאשׁ יוֹאָב וְאֶל כָּל בֵּית אָבִיו; וְאַל יִכָּרֵת מִבֵּית יוֹאָב זָב וּמְצֹרָע וּמַחֲזִיק בַּפֶּלֶךְ וְנֹפֵל בַּחֶרֶב וַחֲסַר לָחֶם. לוְיוֹאָב וַאֲבִישַׁי אָחִיו הָרְגוּ לְאַבְנֵר: עַל אֲשֶׁר הֵמִית אֶת עֲשָׂהאֵל אֲחִיהֶם בְּגִבְעוֹן בַּמִּלְחָמָה.
לאוַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִד אֶל יוֹאָב וְאֶל כָּל הָעָם אֲשֶׁר אִתּוֹ קִרְעוּ בִגְדֵיכֶם וְחִגְרוּ שַׂקִּים וְסִפְדוּ לִפְנֵי אַבְנֵר; וְהַמֶּלֶךְ דָּוִד הֹלֵךְ אַחֲרֵי הַמִּטָּה. לבוַיִּקְבְּרוּ אֶת אַבְנֵר בְּחֶבְרוֹן; וַיִּשָּׂא הַמֶּלֶךְ אֶת קוֹלוֹ וַיֵּבְךְּ אֶל קֶבֶר אַבְנֵר וַיִּבְכּוּ כָּל הָעָם.
לגוַיְקֹנֵן הַמֶּלֶךְ אֶל אַבְנֵר וַיֹּאמַר: הַכְּמוֹת נָבָל יָמוּת אַבְנֵר. לדיָדֶךָ לֹא אֲסֻרוֹת וְרַגְלֶיךָ לֹא לִנְחֻשְׁתַּיִם הֻגָּשׁוּ כִּנְפוֹל לִפְנֵי בְנֵי עַוְלָה נָפָלְתָּ; וַיֹּסִפוּ כָל הָעָם לִבְכּוֹת עָלָיו. להוַיָּבֹא כָל הָעָם לְהַבְרוֹת אֶת דָּוִד לֶחֶם בְּעוֹד הַיּוֹם; וַיִּשָּׁבַע דָּוִד לֵאמֹר כֹּה יַעֲשֶׂה לִּי אֱלֹהִים וְכֹה יֹסִיף כִּי אִם לִפְנֵי בוֹא הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ אֶטְעַם לֶחֶם אוֹ כָל מְאוּמָה. לווְכָל הָעָם הִכִּירוּ וַיִּיטַב בְּעֵינֵיהֶם כְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה הַמֶּלֶךְ בְּעֵינֵי כָל הָעָם טוֹב. לזוַיֵּדְעוּ כָל הָעָם וְכָל יִשְׂרָאֵל בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא: כִּי לֹא הָיְתָה מֵהַמֶּלֶךְ לְהָמִית אֶת אַבְנֵר בֶּן נֵר. לחוַיֹּאמֶר הַמֶּלֶךְ אֶל עֲבָדָיו: הֲלוֹא תֵדְעוּ כִּי שַׂר וְגָדוֹל נָפַל הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל. לטוְאָנֹכִי הַיּוֹם רַךְ וּמָשׁוּחַ מֶלֶךְ וְהָאֲנָשִׁים הָאֵלֶּה בְּנֵי צְרוּיָה קָשִׁים מִמֶּנִּי: יְשַׁלֵּם יהוה לְעֹשֵׂה הָרָעָה כְּרָעָתוֹ.
