Shoftim 1 – שופטים א

1And it came to pass after the death of Yehoshua, that B’nei Yisra’el asked  יהוה , saying, “Who shall go up for us first against the Kena’ani, to fight against them?” 2And  יהוה  said, “Yehudah shall go up; behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.” 3And Yehudah said unto Shimon his brother, “Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Kena’ani; and I likewise will go with you into your lot.” So Shimon went with him. 4And Yehudah went up; and  יהוה  delivered the Kena’ani and the Perizi into their hand; and they smote of them in Bezek ten thousand men. 5And they found My Adon-bezek in Bezek; and they fought against him, and they smote the Kena’ani and the Perizi. 6But My Adon-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes. 7And My Adon-bezek said, “Seventy kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered food under my table; as I have done, so Elohim has requited me.” And they brought him to Yerushalayim, and he died there.

8And the children of Yehudah fought against Yerushalayim, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire. 9And afterward the children of Yehudah went down to fight against the Kena’ani that dwelt in the hill country, and in the South, and in the Lowland. 10And Yehudah went against the Kena’ani that dwelt in Khevron (now the name of Khevron beforetime was Kiriyat-arba) and they smote Sheshai, and Akhiman, and Talmai. 11And from there he went against the inhabitants of Devir (now the name of Devir beforetime was Kiriyat-sefer). 12And Kalev said, “He that smites Kiriyat-sefer, and takes it, to him will I give Akhsah my daughter as a wife.” 13And Otni’el Ben Kenaz, Kalev’s younger brother, took it; and he gave him Akhsah his daughter as a wife. 14And it came to pass, when she came unto him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field; and she alighted from off her donkey; and Kalev said unto her, “What do you want?” 15And she said unto him, “Give me a blessing; for that you have set me in the Southland, give me therefore springs of water.” And Kalev gave her the Upper Springs and the Lower Springs.

16And the children of the Keni, Moshe’s father-in-law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Yehudah into the wilderness of Yehudah, which is in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt with the people. 17And Yehudah went with Shimon his brother, and they smote the Kena’ani that inhabited Zefat, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Khormah. 18Also Yehudah took Aza with the border thereof, and Ashkelon with the border thereof, and Ekron with the border thereof. 19And  יהוה  was with Yehudah; and he drove out the inhabitants of the hill country; for he could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron. 20And they gave Khevron unto Kalev, as Moshe had spoken; and he drove out from there the three sons of Anak. 21And the children of Binyamin did not drive out the Yevusi that inhabited Yerushalayim; but the Yevusi dwelt with the children of Binyamin in Yerushalayim, unto this day.

22And the house of Yosef, they also went up against Beit El; and  יהוה  was with them. 23And the house of Yosef sent to spy out Beit El (now the name of the city beforetime was Luz). 24And the watchers saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, “Show us, we pray, the entrance into the city, and we will deal kindly with you.” 25And he showed them the entrance into the city, and they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man go and all his family. 26And the man went into the land of the Khiti, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz, which is the name thereof unto this day.

27And Menasheh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beit-She’an and its towns, nor of Tanakh and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Yivlam and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; but the Kena’ani were resolved to dwell in that land.

28And it came to pass, when Yisra’el was waxed strong, that they put the Kena’ani to task-work, but did in no wise drive them out. 29And Efrayim drove not out the Kena’ani that dwelt in Gazer; but the Kena’ani dwelt in Gazer among them. 30Zevulun drove not out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Kena’ani dwelt among them, and became tributary. 31Asher drove not out the inhabitants of Ako, nor the inhabitants of Tzidon, nor of Akhlav, nor of Akhziv, nor of Khelbah, nor of Afik, nor of Rekhov; 32but the Asheri dwelt among the Kena’ani, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out. 33Naftali drove not out the inhabitants of Beit-Shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beit-Anat; but he dwelt among the Kena’ani, the inhabitants of the land; nevertheless the inhabitants of Beit-Shemesh and of Beit-Anat became tributary unto them. 34And the Amori forced the children of Dan into the hill country; for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley. 35But the Amori were resolved to dwell in Har Kheres, in Ayalon, and in Sha’alvim; yet the hand of the house of Yosef prevailed, so that they became tributary. 36And the border of the Amori was from the ascent of Akrabim, from Sela, and upward.
