Khukat 1Now Yiftakh the Giladi was a mighty man of valor, and he was the son of a harlot; and Gilad begot Yiftakh. 2And Gilad’s wife bore him sons; and when his wife’s sons grew up, they drove out Yiftakh, and said unto him, “You shall not inherit in our father’s house; for you are the son of another woman.” 3Then Yiftakh fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tov; and there were gathered base fellows to Yiftakh, and they went out with him.
4And it came to pass after a while, that the children of Amon made war against Yisra’el. 5And it was so, that when the children of Amon made war against Yisra’el, the elders of Gilad went to fetch Yiftakh out of the land of Tov. 6And they said unto Yiftakh, “Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Amon.” 7And Yiftakh said unto the elders of Gilad, “Did you not hate me, and drive me out of my father’s house? And why are you come unto me now when you are in distress?” 8And the elders of Gilad said unto Yiftakh, “It is so, we have returned to you now, that you may go with us, and fight with the children of Amon, and you shall be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilad.” 9And Yiftakh said unto the elders of Gilad, “If you bring me back home to fight with the children of Amon, and יהוה delivers them before me, I will be your head.” 10And the elders of Gilad said unto Yiftakh, ” יהוה shall be witness between us; surely according to your word, so will we do.” 11Then Yiftakh went with the elders of Gilad, and the people made him head and chief over them; and Yiftakh spoke all his words before יהוה in Mitzpah.
12And Yiftakh sent messengers unto the king of the children of Amon, saying, “What have you to do with me, that you are come unto me to fight against my land?” 13And the king of the children of Amon answered unto the messengers of Yiftakh, “Because Yisra’el took away my land, when he came up out of Mitzrayim, from the Arnon even unto the Yabok, and unto the Yarden; now therefore restore those cities peaceably.” 14And Yiftakh sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Amon; 15and he said unto him, “Thus says Yiftakh, ‘Yisra’el took not away the land of Mo’av, nor the land of the children of Amon. 16But when they came up from Mitzrayim, and Yisra’el walked through the wilderness unto Yam Suf, and came to Kadesh; 17then Yisra’el sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, ‘Let me, I pray, pass through your land;’ but the king of Edom hearkened not. And in like manner he sent unto the king of Mo’av; but he would not; and Yisra’el abode in Kadesh. 18Then he walked through the wilderness, and encompassed the land of Edom, and the land of Mo’av, and came by the east side of the land of Mo’av, and they pitched on the other side of the Arnon; but they came not within the border of Mo’av, for the Arnon was the border of Mo’av. 19And Yisra’el sent messengers unto Sikhon king of the Amori, the king of Kheshbon; and Yisra’el said unto him, ‘Let us pass, we pray, through your land unto my place.’ 20But Sikhon trusted not Yisra’el to pass through his border; but Sikhon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Yatzah, and fought against Yisra’el. 21And יהוה Elohei Yisra’el delivered Sikhon and all his people into the hand of Yisra’el, and they smote them; so Yisra’el possessed all the land of the Amori, the inhabitants of that country. 22And they possessed all the border of the Amori, from the Arnon even unto the Yabok, and from the wilderness even unto the Yarden. 23So now יהוה Elohei Yisra’el has dispossessed the Amori from before His people Yisra’el, and should you possess them? 24Will you not possess that which Kemosh your god gives you to possess? So whoever יהוה our Elohim has dispossessed from before us, them will we possess. 25And now are you any thing better than Balak the son of Tzipor, king of Mo’av? Did he ever strive against Yisra’el, or did he ever fight against them? 26While Yisra’el dwelt in Kheshbon and its towns, and in Aro’er and its towns, and in all the cities that are along by the side of the Arnon, three hundred years; why did you not recover them within that time? 27I therefore have not sinned against you, but you do me wrong to war against me; יהוה HaShofet be judge this day between B’nei Yisra’el and the children of Amon’.” 28But the king of the children of Amon hearkened not unto the words of Yiftakh which he sent him.
29Then the Ru’akh of יהוה came upon Yiftakh, and he passed over Gilad and Menasheh, and passed over Mitzpah of Gilad, and from Mitzpah of Gilad he passed over unto the children of Amon. 30And Yiftakh vowed a vow unto יהוה , and said, “If You will indeed deliver the children of Amon into my hand, 31then it shall be, that whatsoever comes forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in shalom from the children of Amon, it shall be for יהוה , and I will offer it up for a burnt-offering.”
32So Yiftakh passed over unto the children of Amon to fight against them; and יהוה delivered them into his hand. 33And he smote them from Aro’er until you come to Minit, even twenty cities, and unto Avel-Keramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Amon were subdued before B’nei Yisra’el. end Khukat
34And Yiftakh came to Mitzpah unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances; and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter. 35And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low, and you are become my troubler; for I have opened my mouth unto יהוה , and I cannot go back.” 36And she said unto him, “My father, you have opened your mouth unto יהוה ; do unto me according to that which has proceeded out of your mouth; forasmuch as יהוה has taken vengeance for you of your enemies, even of the children of Amon.” 37And she said unto her father, “Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may depart and go down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.” 38And he said, “Go.” And he sent her away for two months; and she departed, she and her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains. 39And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed; and she had not known man. And it was a custom in Yisra’el, 40that the daughters of Yisra’el went yearly to lament the daughter of Yiftakh the Giladi four days in a year.
אוְיִפְתָּח הַגִּלְעָדִי הָיָה גִּבּוֹר חַיִל וְהוּא בֶּן אִשָּׁה זוֹנָה; וַיּוֹלֶד גִּלְעָד אֶת יִפְתָּח. בוַתֵּלֶד אֵשֶׁת גִּלְעָד לוֹ בָּנִים; וַיִּגְדְּלוּ בְנֵי הָאִשָּׁה וַיְגָרְשׁוּ אֶת יִפְתָּח וַיֹּאמְרוּ לוֹ לֹא תִנְחַל בְּבֵית אָבִינוּ כִּי בֶּן אִשָּׁה אַחֶרֶת אָתָּה. גוַיִּבְרַח יִפְתָּח מִפְּנֵי אֶחָיו וַיֵּשֶׁב בְּאֶרֶץ טוֹב; וַיִּתְלַקְּטוּ אֶל יִפְתָּח אֲנָשִׁים רֵיקִים וַיֵּצְאוּ עִמּוֹ.
דוַיְהִי מִיָּמִים; וַיִּלָּחֲמוּ בְנֵי עַמּוֹן עִם יִשְׂרָאֵל. הוַיְהִי כַּאֲשֶׁר נִלְחֲמוּ בְנֵי עַמּוֹן עִם יִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיֵּלְכוּ זִקְנֵי גִלְעָד לָקַחַת אֶת יִפְתָּח מֵאֶרֶץ טוֹב. ווַיֹּאמְרוּ לְיִפְתָּח לְכָה וְהָיִיתָה לָּנוּ לְקָצִין; וְנִלָּחֲמָה בִּבְנֵי עַמּוֹן. זוַיֹּאמֶר יִפְתָּח לְזִקְנֵי גִלְעָד הֲלֹא אַתֶּם שְׂנֵאתֶם אוֹתִי וַתְּגָרְשׁוּנִי מִבֵּית אָבִי; וּמַדּוּעַ בָּאתֶם אֵלַי עַתָּה כַּאֲשֶׁר צַר לָכֶם. חוַיֹּאמְרוּ זִקְנֵי גִלְעָד אֶל יִפְתָּח לָכֵן עַתָּה שַׁבְנוּ אֵלֶיךָ וְהָלַכְתָּ עִמָּנוּ וְנִלְחַמְתָּ בִּבְנֵי עַמּוֹן; וְהָיִיתָ לָּנוּ לְרֹאשׁ לְכֹל יֹשְׁבֵי גִלְעָד. טוַיֹּאמֶר יִפְתָּח אֶל זִקְנֵי גִלְעָד אִם מְשִׁיבִים אַתֶּם אוֹתִי לְהִלָּחֵם בִּבְנֵי עַמּוֹן וְנָתַן יהוה אוֹתָם לְפָנָי אָנֹכִי אֶהְיֶה לָכֶם לְרֹאשׁ. יוַיֹּאמְרוּ זִקְנֵי גִלְעָד אֶל יִפְתָּח: יהוה יִהְיֶה שֹׁמֵעַ בֵּינוֹתֵינוּ אִם לֹא כִדְבָרְךָ כֵּן נַעֲשֶׂה. יאוַיֵּלֶךְ יִפְתָּח עִם זִקְנֵי גִלְעָד וַיָּשִׂימוּ הָעָם אוֹתוֹ עֲלֵיהֶם לְרֹאשׁ וּלְקָצִין; וַיְדַבֵּר יִפְתָּח אֶת כָּל דְּבָרָיו לִפְנֵי יהוה בַּמִּצְפָּה.
יבוַיִּשְׁלַח יִפְתָּח מַלְאָכִים אֶל מֶלֶךְ בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן לֵאמֹר: מַה לִּי וָלָךְ כִּי בָאתָ אֵלַי לְהִלָּחֵם בְּאַרְצִי. יגוַיֹּאמֶר מֶלֶךְ בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן אֶל מַלְאֲכֵי יִפְתָּח כִּי לָקַח יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת אַרְצִי בַּעֲלוֹתוֹ מִמִּצְרַיִם מֵאַרְנוֹן וְעַד הַיַּבֹּק וְעַד הַיַּרְדֵּן; וְעַתָּה הָשִׁיבָה אֶתְהֶן בְּשָׁלוֹם. ידוַיּוֹסֶף עוֹד יִפְתָּח; וַיִּשְׁלַח מַלְאָכִים אֶל מֶלֶךְ בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן. טווַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ כֹּה אָמַר יִפְתָּח: לֹא לָקַח יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת אֶרֶץ מוֹאָב וְאֶת אֶרֶץ בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן. טזכִּי בַּעֲלוֹתָם מִמִּצְרָיִם; וַיֵּלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל בַּמִּדְבָּר עַד יַם סוּף וַיָּבֹא קָדֵשָׁה. יזוַיִּשְׁלַח יִשְׂרָאֵל מַלְאָכִים אֶל מֶלֶךְ אֱדוֹם לֵאמֹר אֶעְבְּרָה נָּא בְאַרְצֶךָ וְלֹא שָׁמַע מֶלֶךְ אֱדוֹם וְגַם אֶל מֶלֶךְ מוֹאָב שָׁלַח וְלֹא אָבָה; וַיֵּשֶׁב יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּקָדֵשׁ. יחוַיֵּלֶךְ בַּמִּדְבָּר וַיָּסָב אֶת אֶרֶץ אֱדוֹם וְאֶת אֶרֶץ מוֹאָב וַיָּבֹא מִמִּזְרַח שֶׁמֶשׁ לְאֶרֶץ מוֹאָב וַיַּחֲנוּן בְּעֵבֶר אַרְנוֹן; וְלֹא בָאוּ בִּגְבוּל מוֹאָב כִּי אַרְנוֹן גְּבוּל מוֹאָב. יטוַיִּשְׁלַח יִשְׂרָאֵל מַלְאָכִים אֶל סִיחוֹן מֶלֶךְ הָאֱמֹרִי מֶלֶךְ חֶשְׁבּוֹן; וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ יִשְׂרָאֵל נַעְבְּרָה נָּא בְאַרְצְךָ עַד מְקוֹמִי. כוְלֹא הֶאֱמִין סִיחוֹן אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל עֲבֹר בִּגְבֻלוֹ וַיֶּאֱסֹף סִיחוֹן אֶת כָּל עַמּוֹ וַיַּחֲנוּ בְּיָהְצָה; וַיִּלָּחֶם עִם יִשְׂרָאֵל. כאוַיִּתֵּן יהוה אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת סִיחוֹן וְאֶת כָּל עַמּוֹ בְּיַד יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיַּכּוּם; וַיִּירַשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל אֵת כָּל אֶרֶץ הָאֱמֹרִי יוֹשֵׁב הָאָרֶץ הַהִיא. כבוַיִּירְשׁוּ אֵת כָּל גְּבוּל הָאֱמֹרִי מֵאַרְנוֹן וְעַד הַיַּבֹּק וּמִן הַמִּדְבָּר וְעַד הַיַּרְדֵּן. כגוְעַתָּה יהוה אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל הוֹרִישׁ אֶת הָאֱמֹרִי מִפְּנֵי עַמּוֹ יִשְׂרָאֵל; וְאַתָּה תִּירָשֶׁנּוּ. כדהֲלֹא אֵת אֲשֶׁר יוֹרִישְׁךָ כְּמוֹשׁ אֱלֹהֶיךָ אוֹתוֹ תִירָשׁ; וְאֵת כָּל אֲשֶׁר הוֹרִישׁ יהוה אֱלֹהֵינוּ מִפָּנֵינוּ אוֹתוֹ נִירָשׁ. כהוְעַתָּה הֲטוֹב טוֹב אַתָּה מִבָּלָק בֶּן צִפּוֹר מֶלֶךְ מוֹאָב: הֲרוֹב רָב עִם יִשְׂרָאֵל אִם נִלְחֹם נִלְחַם בָּם. כובְּשֶׁבֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּחֶשְׁבּוֹן וּבִבְנוֹתֶיהָ וּבְעַרְעוֹר וּבִבְנוֹתֶיהָ וּבְכָל הֶעָרִים אֲשֶׁר עַל יְדֵי אַרְנוֹן שְׁלֹשׁ מֵאוֹת שָׁנָה וּמַדּוּעַ לֹא הִצַּלְתֶּם בָּעֵת הַהִיא. כזוְאָנֹכִי לֹא חָטָאתִי לָךְ וְאַתָּה עֹשֶׂה אִתִּי רָעָה לְהִלָּחֶם בִּי: יִשְׁפֹּט יהוה הַשֹּׁפֵט הַיּוֹם בֵּין בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וּבֵין בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן. כחוְלֹא שָׁמַע מֶלֶךְ בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן אֶל דִּבְרֵי יִפְתָּח אֲשֶׁר שָׁלַח אֵלָיו.
כטוַתְּהִי עַל יִפְתָּח רוּחַ יהוה וַיַּעֲבֹר אֶת הַגִּלְעָד וְאֶת מְנַשֶּׁה; וַיַּעֲבֹר אֶת מִצְפֵּה גִלְעָד וּמִמִּצְפֵּה גִלְעָד עָבַר בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן. לוַיִּדַּר יִפְתָּח נֶדֶר לַיהוה וַיֹּאמַר: אִם נָתוֹן תִּתֵּן אֶת בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן בְּיָדִי. לאוְהָיָה הַיּוֹצֵא אֲשֶׁר יֵצֵא מִדַּלְתֵי בֵיתִי לִקְרָאתִי בְּשׁוּבִי בְשָׁלוֹם מִבְּנֵי עַמּוֹן וְהָיָה לַיהוה וְהַעֲלִיתִיהוּ עֹלָה.
לבוַיַּעֲבֹר יִפְתָּח אֶל בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן לְהִלָּחֶם בָּם; וַיִּתְּנֵם יהוה בְּיָדוֹ. לגוַיַּכֵּם מֵעֲרוֹעֵר וְעַד בֹּאֲךָ מִנִּית עֶשְׂרִים עִיר וְעַד אָבֵל כְּרָמִים מַכָּה גְּדוֹלָה מְאֹד; וַיִּכָּנְעוּ בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן מִפְּנֵי בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל.
לדוַיָּבֹא יִפְתָּח הַמִּצְפָּה אֶל בֵּיתוֹ וְהִנֵּה בִתּוֹ יֹצֵאת לִקְרָאתוֹ בְּתֻפִּים וּבִמְחֹלוֹת: וְרַק הִיא יְחִידָה אֵין לוֹ מִמֶּנּוּ בֵּן אוֹ בַת. להוַיְהִי כִרְאוֹתוֹ אוֹתָהּ וַיִּקְרַע אֶת בְּגָדָיו וַיֹּאמֶר אֲהָהּ בִּתִּי הַכְרֵעַ הִכְרַעְתִּנִי וְאַתְּ הָיִית בְּעֹכְרָי; וְאָנֹכִי פָּצִיתִי פִי אֶל יהוה וְלֹא אוּכַל לָשׁוּב. לווַתֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו אָבִי פָּצִיתָה אֶת פִּיךָ אֶל יהוה עֲשֵׂה לִי כַּאֲשֶׁר יָצָא מִפִּיךָ: אַחֲרֵי אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה לְךָ יהוה נְקָמוֹת מֵאֹיְבֶיךָ מִבְּנֵי עַמּוֹן. לזוַתֹּאמֶר אֶל אָבִיהָ יֵעָשֶׂה לִּי הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה: הַרְפֵּה מִמֶּנִּי שְׁנַיִם חֳדָשִׁים וְאֵלְכָה וְיָרַדְתִּי עַל הֶהָרִים וְאֶבְכֶּה עַל בְּתוּלַי אָנֹכִי ורעיתי (וְרֵעוֹתָי). לחוַיֹּאמֶר לֵכִי וַיִּשְׁלַח אוֹתָהּ שְׁנֵי חֳדָשִׁים; וַתֵּלֶךְ הִיא וְרֵעוֹתֶיהָ וַתֵּבְךְּ עַל בְּתוּלֶיהָ עַל הֶהָרִים. לטוַיְהִי מִקֵּץ שְׁנַיִם חֳדָשִׁים וַתָּשָׁב אֶל אָבִיהָ וַיַּעַשׂ לָהּ אֶת נִדְרוֹ אֲשֶׁר נָדָר; וְהִיא לֹא יָדְעָה אִישׁ וַתְּהִי חֹק בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל. ממִיָּמִים יָמִימָה תֵּלַכְנָה בְּנוֹת יִשְׂרָאֵל לְתַנּוֹת לְבַת יִפְתָּח הַגִּלְעָדִי אַרְבַּעַת יָמִים בַּשָּׁנָה.
