1Then all B’nei Yisra’el went out, and the Kahal was assembled as one man, from Dan even to Be’er Sheva with the land of Gilad, unto יהוה at Mitzpah. 2And the chiefs of all the people, even of all the tribes of Yisra’el, presented themselves in the Kahal of the people of Elohim, four hundred thousand footmen that drew the sword.
3Now the children of Binyamin heard that B’nei Yisra’el were gone up to Mitzpah. And B’nei Yisra’el said, “Tell us, how was this wickedness brought to pass?” 4And the Levite, the husband of the woman that was murdered, answered and said, “I came into Givah that belongs to Binyamin, I and my concubine, to lodge. 5And the men of Givah rose against me, and beset the house round about upon me by night; me they thought to have slain, and my concubine they forced, and she is dead. 6And I took my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Yisra’el; for they have committed lewdness and wantonness in Yisra’el. 7Behold, you are all here, B’nei Yisra’el, give here your advice and council.” 8And all the people arose as one man, saying, “We will not any of us go to his tent, neither will we any of us turn unto his house. 9But now this is the thing which we will do to Givah: we will go up against it by lot; 10and we will take ten men of a hundred throughout all the tribes of Yisra’el, and a hundred of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to fetch provision for the people, that they may do, when they come to Givah of Binyamin, according to all the wantonness that they have wrought in Yisra’el.” 11So all the men of Yisra’el were gathered against the city, knit together as one man.
12And the tribes of Yisra’el sent men through all the tribe of Binyamin, saying, “What wickedness is this that is come to pass among you? 13Now therefore deliver up the men, the base fellows that are in Givah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Yisra’el.” But the children of Binyamin would not hearken to the voice of their brethren B’nei Yisra’el. 14And the children of Binyamin gathered themselves together out of their cities unto Givah, to go out to battle against B’nei Yisra’el. 15And the children of Binyamin numbered on that day out of the cities twenty-six thousand men that drew the sword, besides the inhabitants of Givah, who numbered seven hundred chosen men. 16All this people, even seven hundred chosen men, were left-handed; every one could sling stones at a hair-breadth, and not miss.
17And the men of Yisra’el, beside Binyamin, numbered four hundred thousand men that drew the sword; all these were men of war. 18And B’nei Yisra’el arose, and went up to Beit El, and asked counsel of Elohim; and they said, “Who shall go up for us first to battle against the children of Binyamin?” And יהוה said, “Yehudah first.” 19And B’nei Yisra’el rose up in the morning, and encamped at Givah. 20And B’nei Yisra’el rose up and went out to battle against Binyamin; and the men of Yisra’el set the battle in array against them at Givah. 21And the children of Binyamin came forth out of Givah, and destroyed down to the ground of the Yisra’elites on that day twenty-two thousand men. 22And the people, the men of Yisra’el, encouraged themselves, and set the battle again in array in the place where they set themselves in array the first day. 23And B’nei Yisra’el went up and wept before יהוה until evening; and they asked of יהוה , saying, “Shall I again draw nigh to battle against the children of Binyamin my brother?” And יהוה said, “Go up against him.”
24And B’nei Yisra’el came near against the children of Binyamin the second day. 25And Binyamin went forth against them out of Givah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of B’nei Yisra’el again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword. 26Then all the B’nei Yisra’el, and all the people, went up, and came unto Beit El, and wept, and sat there before יהוה , and fasted that day until evening; and they offered Olot and Sh’lamim offerings before יהוה . And27 B’nei Yisra’el asked of יהוה , for the Aron Brit HaElohim was there in those days, 28(and Pin’khas Ben El Azar Ben Aharon, stood before it in those days) saying, “Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Binyamin my brother, or shall I cease?” And יהוה said, “Go up; for tomorrow I will deliver him into your hand.” 29And Yisra’el set liers-in-wait against Givah round about.
30And B’nei Yisra’el went up against the children of Binyamin on the third day, and set themselves in array against Givah, as at other times. 31And the children of Binyamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to smite and kill of the people, as at other times, in the field, in the highways, of which one goes up to Beit El, and the other to Givah, about thirty men of Yisra’el. 32And the children of Binyamin said, “They are smitten down before us, as at the first.” But B’nei Yisra’el said, “Let us flee, and draw them away from the city unto the highways.” 33And all the men of Yisra’el rose up out of their place, and set themselves in array at Ba’al Tamar; and the liers-in-wait of Yisra’el broke forth out of their place, even out of Ma’areh Gavah. 34And there came over against Givah ten thousand chosen men out of all Yisra’el, and the battle was sore; but they knew not that evil was close upon them.
35And יהוה smote Binyamin before Yisra’el; and B’nei Yisra’el destroyed of Binyamin that day a hundred and twenty-five thousand men; all these drew the sword. 36So the children of Binyamin saw that they were smitten. And the men of Yisra’el gave place to Binyamin, because they trusted unto the liers-in-wait whom they had set against Givah. 37And the liers-in-wait hastened, and rushed upon Givah; and the liers-in-wait drew forth, and smote all the city with the edge of the sword. 38Now there was an appointed sign between the men of Yisra’el and the liers-in-wait, that they should make a great beacon of smoke rise up out of the city. 39And the men of Yisra’el turned in the battle, and Binyamin began to smite and kill of the men of Yisra’el about thirty persons; for they said, “Surely they are smitten down before us, as in the first battle.” 40But when the beacon began to arise up out of the city in a pillar of smoke, Binyamin looked behind them, and, behold, the whole of the city went up in smoke to heaven. 41And the men of Yisra’el turned, and the men of Binyamin were amazed; for they saw that evil was come upon them. 42Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Yisra’el unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle followed hard after them; and they that came out of the city destroyed them in the midst of the men of Yisra’el. 43They inclosed Binyamin round about, and chased them, and overtook them at their resting-place, as far as over against Givah toward the sunrising. 44And there fell of Binyamin eighteen thousand men; all these were men of valor. 45And they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimon; and they gleaned of them in the highways five thousand men, and followed hard after them unto Gidom, and smote of them two thousand men. 46So all who fell that day of Binyamin were twenty-five thousand men that drew the sword; all these were men of valor. 47But six hundred men turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimon, and abode in the rock of Rimon four months. 48And the men of Yisra’el turned back upon the children of Binyamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword, both the entire city, and the cattle, and all that they found; moreover all the cities which they found they set on fire.
אוַיֵּצְאוּ כָּל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַתִּקָּהֵל הָעֵדָה כְּאִישׁ אֶחָד לְמִדָּן וְעַד בְּאֵר שֶׁבַע וְאֶרֶץ הַגִּלְעָד אֶל יהוה הַמִּצְפָּה. בוַיִּתְיַצְּבוּ פִּנּוֹת כָּל הָעָם כֹּל שִׁבְטֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בִּקְהַל עַם הָאֱלֹהִים; אַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת אֶלֶף אִישׁ רַגְלִי שֹׁלֵף חָרֶב.
גוַיִּשְׁמְעוּ בְּנֵי בִנְיָמִן כִּי עָלוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל הַמִּצְפָּה; וַיֹּאמְרוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל דַּבְּרוּ אֵיכָה נִהְיְתָה הָרָעָה הַזֹּאת. דוַיַּעַן הָאִישׁ הַלֵּוִי אִישׁ הָאִשָּׁה הַנִּרְצָחָה וַיֹּאמַר: הַגִּבְעָתָה אֲשֶׁר לְבִנְיָמִן בָּאתִי אֲנִי וּפִילַגְשִׁי לָלוּן. הוַיָּקֻמוּ עָלַי בַּעֲלֵי הַגִּבְעָה וַיָּסֹבּוּ עָלַי אֶת הַבַּיִת לָיְלָה; אוֹתִי דִּמּוּ לַהֲרֹג וְאֶת פִּילַגְשִׁי עִנּוּ וַתָּמֹת. ווָאֹחֵז בְּפִילַגְשִׁי וָאֲנַתְּחֶהָ וָאֲשַׁלְּחֶהָ בְּכָל שְׂדֵה נַחֲלַת יִשְׂרָאֵל: כִּי עָשׂוּ זִמָּה וּנְבָלָה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל. זהִנֵּה כֻלְּכֶם בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל הָבוּ לָכֶם דָּבָר וְעֵצָה הֲלֹם. חוַיָּקָם כָּל הָעָם כְּאִישׁ אֶחָד לֵאמֹר: לֹא נֵלֵךְ אִישׁ לְאָהֳלוֹ וְלֹא נָסוּר אִישׁ לְבֵיתוֹ. טוְעַתָּה זֶה הַדָּבָר אֲשֶׁר נַעֲשֶׂה לַגִּבְעָה: עָלֶיהָ בְּגוֹרָל. יוְלָקַחְנוּ עֲשָׂרָה אֲנָשִׁים לַמֵּאָה לְכֹל שִׁבְטֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וּמֵאָה לָאֶלֶף וְאֶלֶף לָרְבָבָה לָקַחַת צֵדָה לָעָם לַעֲשׂוֹת לְבוֹאָם לְגֶבַע בִּנְיָמִן כְּכָל הַנְּבָלָה אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל. יאוַיֵּאָסֵף כָּל אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל הָעִיר כְּאִישׁ אֶחָד חֲבֵרִים.
יבוַיִּשְׁלְחוּ שִׁבְטֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֲנָשִׁים בְּכָל שִׁבְטֵי בִנְיָמִן לֵאמֹר: מָה הָרָעָה הַזֹּאת אֲשֶׁר נִהְיְתָה בָּכֶם. יגוְעַתָּה תְּנוּ אֶת הָאֲנָשִׁים בְּנֵי בְלִיַּעַל אֲשֶׁר בַּגִּבְעָה וּנְמִיתֵם וּנְבַעֲרָה רָעָה מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל; וְלֹא אָבוּ (בְּנֵי) בִנְיָמִן לִשְׁמֹעַ בְּקוֹל אֲחֵיהֶם בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. ידוַיֵּאָסְפוּ בְנֵי בִנְיָמִן מִן הֶעָרִים הַגִּבְעָתָה לָצֵאת לַמִּלְחָמָה עִם בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. טווַיִּתְפָּקְדוּ בְנֵי בִנְיָמִן בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא מֵהֶעָרִים עֶשְׂרִים וְשִׁשָּׁה אֶלֶף אִישׁ שֹׁלֵף חָרֶב לְבַד מִיֹּשְׁבֵי הַגִּבְעָה הִתְפָּקְדוּ שְׁבַע מֵאוֹת אִישׁ בָּחוּר. טזמִכֹּל הָעָם הַזֶּה שְׁבַע מֵאוֹת אִישׁ בָּחוּר אִטֵּר יַד יְמִינוֹ: כָּל זֶה קֹלֵעַ בָּאֶבֶן אֶל הַשַּׂעֲרָה וְלֹא יַחֲטִא.
יזוְאִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל הִתְפָּקְדוּ לְבַד מִבִּנְיָמִן אַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת אֶלֶף אִישׁ שֹׁלֵף חָרֶב: כָּל זֶה אִישׁ מִלְחָמָה. יחוַיָּקֻמוּ וַיַּעֲלוּ בֵית אֵל וַיִּשְׁאֲלוּ בֵאלֹהִים וַיֹּאמְרוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל מִי יַעֲלֶה לָּנוּ בַתְּחִלָּה לַמִּלְחָמָה עִם בְּנֵי בִנְיָמִן; וַיֹּאמֶר יהוה יְהוּדָה בַתְּחִלָּה. יטוַיָּקוּמוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בַּבֹּקֶר; וַיַּחֲנוּ עַל הַגִּבְעָה. כוַיֵּצֵא אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל לַמִּלְחָמָה עִם בִּנְיָמִן; וַיַּעַרְכוּ אִתָּם אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל מִלְחָמָה אֶל הַגִּבְעָה. כאוַיֵּצְאוּ בְנֵי בִנְיָמִן מִן הַגִּבְעָה; וַיַּשְׁחִיתוּ בְיִשְׂרָאֵל בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא שְׁנַיִם וְעֶשְׂרִים אֶלֶף אִישׁ אָרְצָה. כבוַיִּתְחַזֵּק הָעָם אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיֹּסִפוּ לַעֲרֹךְ מִלְחָמָה בַּמָּקוֹם אֲשֶׁר עָרְכוּ שָׁם בַּיּוֹם הָרִאשׁוֹן. כגוַיַּעֲלוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיִּבְכּוּ לִפְנֵי יהוה עַד הָעֶרֶב וַיִּשְׁאֲלוּ בַיהוה לֵאמֹר הַאוֹסִיף לָגֶשֶׁת לַמִּלְחָמָה עִם בְּנֵי בִנְיָמִן אָחִי; וַיֹּאמֶר יהוה עֲלוּ אֵלָיו.
כדוַיִּקְרְבוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל בְּנֵי בִנְיָמִן בַּיּוֹם הַשֵּׁנִי. כהוַיֵּצֵא בִנְיָמִן לִקְרָאתָם מִן הַגִּבְעָהבַּיּוֹם הַשֵּׁנִי וַיַּשְׁחִיתוּ בִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל עוֹד שְׁמֹנַת עָשָׂר אֶלֶף אִישׁ אָרְצָה: כָּל אֵלֶּה שֹׁלְפֵי חָרֶב. כווַיַּעֲלוּ כָל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְכָל הָעָם וַיָּבֹאוּ בֵית אֵל וַיִּבְכּוּ וַיֵּשְׁבוּ שָׁם לִפְנֵי יהוה וַיָּצוּמוּ בַיּוֹם הַהוּא עַד הָעָרֶב; וַיַּעֲלוּ עֹלוֹת וּשְׁלָמִים לִפְנֵי יהוה . כזוַיִּשְׁאֲלוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בַּיהוה ; וְשָׁם אֲרוֹן בְּרִית הָאֱלֹהִים בַּיָּמִים הָהֵם. כחוּפִינְחָס בֶּן אֶלְעָזָר בֶּן אַהֲרֹן עֹמֵד לְפָנָיו בַּיָּמִים הָהֵם לֵאמֹר הַאוֹסִף עוֹד לָצֵאת לַמִּלְחָמָה עִם בְּנֵי בִנְיָמִן אָחִי אִם אֶחְדָּל; וַיֹּאמֶר יהוה עֲלוּ כִּי מָחָר אֶתְּנֶנּוּ בְיָדֶךָ. כטוַיָּשֶׂם יִשְׂרָאֵל אֹרְבִים אֶל הַגִּבְעָה סָבִיב.
לוַיַּעֲלוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל בְּנֵי בִנְיָמִן בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁי; וַיַּעַרְכוּ אֶל הַגִּבְעָה כְּפַעַם בְּפָעַם. לאוַיֵּצְאוּ בְנֵי בִנְיָמִן לִקְרַאת הָעָם הָנְתְּקוּ מִן הָעִיר; וַיָּחֵלּוּ לְהַכּוֹת מֵהָעָם חֲלָלִים כְּפַעַם בְּפַעַם בַּמְסִלּוֹת אֲשֶׁר אַחַת עֹלָה בֵית אֵל וְאַחַת גִּבְעָתָה בַּשָּׂדֶה כִּשְׁלֹשִׁים אִישׁ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל. לבוַיֹּאמְרוּ בְּנֵי בִנְיָמִן נִגָּפִים הֵם לְפָנֵינוּ כְּבָרִאשֹׁנָה; וּבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אָמְרוּ נָנוּסָה וּנְתַקְּנוּהוּ מִן הָעִיר אֶל הַמְסִלּוֹת. לגוְכֹל אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל קָמוּ מִמְּקוֹמוֹ וַיַּעַרְכוּ בְּבַעַל תָּמָר; וְאֹרֵב יִשְׂרָאֵל מֵגִיחַ מִמְּקֹמוֹ מִמַּעֲרֵה גָבַע. לדוַיָּבֹאוּ מִנֶּגֶד לַגִּבְעָה עֲשֶׂרֶת אֲלָפִים אִישׁ בָּחוּר מִכָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל וְהַמִּלְחָמָה כָּבֵדָה; וְהֵם לֹא יָדְעוּ כִּי נֹגַעַת עֲלֵיהֶם הָרָעָה.
להוַיִּגֹּף יהוה אֶת בִּנְיָמִן לִפְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיַּשְׁחִיתוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּבִנְיָמִן בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא עֶשְׂרִים וַחֲמִשָּׁה אֶלֶף וּמֵאָה אִישׁ: כָּל אֵלֶּה שֹׁלֵף חָרֶב. לווַיִּרְאוּ בְנֵי בִנְיָמִן כִּי נִגָּפוּ; וַיִּתְּנוּ אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל מָקוֹם לְבִנְיָמִן כִּי בָטְחוּ אֶל הָאֹרֵב אֲשֶׁר שָׂמוּ אֶל הַגִּבְעָה. לזוְהָאֹרֵב הֵחִישׁוּ וַיִּפְשְׁטוּ אֶל הַגִּבְעָה; וַיִּמְשֹׁךְ הָאֹרֵב וַיַּךְ אֶת כָּל הָעִיר לְפִי חָרֶב. לחוְהַמּוֹעֵד הָיָה לְאִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל עִם הָאֹרֵב; הֶרֶב לְהַעֲלוֹתָם מַשְׂאַת הֶעָשָׁן מִן הָעִיר. לטוַיַּהֲפֹךְ אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל בַּמִּלְחָמָה; וּבִנְיָמִן הֵחֵל לְהַכּוֹת חֲלָלִים בְּאִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל כִּשְׁלֹשִׁים אִישׁ כִּי אָמְרוּ אַךְ נִגּוֹף נִגָּף הוּא לְפָנֵינוּ כַּמִּלְחָמָה הָרִאשֹׁנָה. מוְהַמַּשְׂאֵת הֵחֵלָּה לַעֲלוֹת מִן הָעִיר עַמּוּד עָשָׁן; וַיִּפֶן בִּנְיָמִן אַחֲרָיו וְהִנֵּה עָלָה כְלִיל הָעִיר הַשָּׁמָיְמָה. מאוְאִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל הָפַךְ וַיִּבָּהֵל אִישׁ בִּנְיָמִן: כִּי רָאָה כִּי נָגְעָה עָלָיו הָרָעָה. מבוַיִּפְנוּ לִפְנֵי אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל דֶּרֶךְ הַמִּדְבָּר וְהַמִּלְחָמָה הִדְבִּיקָתְהוּ; וַאֲשֶׁר מֵהֶעָרִים מַשְׁחִיתִים אוֹתוֹ בְּתוֹכוֹ. מגכִּתְּרוּ אֶת בִּנְיָמִן הִרְדִיפֻהוּ מְנוּחָה הִדְרִיכֻהוּ עַד נֹכַח הַגִּבְעָה מִמִּזְרַח שָׁמֶשׁ. מדוַיִּפְּלוּ מִבִּנְיָמִן שְׁמֹנָה עָשָׂר אֶלֶף אִישׁ: אֶת כָּל אֵלֶּה אַנְשֵׁי חָיִל. מהוַיִּפְנוּ וַיָּנֻסוּ הַמִּדְבָּרָה אֶל סֶלַע הָרִמּוֹן וַיְעֹלְלֻהוּ בַּמְסִלּוֹת חֲמֵשֶׁת אֲלָפִים אִישׁ; וַיַּדְבִּיקוּ אַחֲרָיו עַד גִּדְעֹם וַיַּכּוּ מִמֶּנּוּ אַלְפַּיִם אִישׁ. מווַיְהִי כָל הַנֹּפְלִים מִבִּנְיָמִן עֶשְׂרִים וַחֲמִשָּׁה אֶלֶף אִישׁ שֹׁלֵף חֶרֶב בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא: אֶת כָּל אֵלֶּה אַנְשֵׁי חָיִל. מזוַיִּפְנוּ וַיָּנֻסוּ הַמִּדְבָּרָה אֶל סֶלַע הָרִמּוֹן שֵׁשׁ מֵאוֹת אִישׁ; וַיֵּשְׁבוּ בְּסֶלַע רִמּוֹן אַרְבָּעָה חֳדָשִׁים. מחוְאִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל שָׁבוּ אֶל בְּנֵי בִנְיָמִן וַיַּכּוּם לְפִי חֶרֶב מֵעִיר מְתֹם עַד בְּהֵמָה עַד כָּל הַנִּמְצָא; גַּם כָּל הֶעָרִים הַנִּמְצָאוֹת שִׁלְּחוּ בָאֵשׁ.
