1And B’nei Yisra’el did that which was evil in the sight of יהוה ; and יהוה delivered them into the hand of Midyan seven years. 2And the hand of Midyan prevailed against Yisra’el; and because of Midyan, B’nei Yisra’el made them the dens which are in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds. 3And so it was, when Yisra’el had sown, that the Midyani came up, and the Amaleki, and the children of the east; they came up against them; 4and they encamped against them, and destroyed the produce of the earth, till you come unto Azatah, and left no sustenance in Yisra’el, neither sheep, nor ox, nor donkey. 5For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came in as locusts for multitude; both they and their camels were without number; and they came into the land to destroy it. 6And Yisra’el was brought very low because of Midyan; and B’nei Yisra’el cried unto יהוה .
7And it came to pass, when B’nei Yisra’el cried unto יהוה because of Midyan, 8that יהוה sent a Navi unto B’nei Yisra’el; and he said unto them, “Thus says יהוה , Elohei Yisra’el”I brought you up from Mitzrayim, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage; 9and I delivered you out of the hand of Mitzrayim, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drove them out from before you, and gave you their land. 10And I said unto you, ‘I am יהוה your Elohim; you shall not fear the gods of the Amori, in whose land you dwell;’ but you have not hearkened unto My voice.'”
11And the Malakh יהוה came, and sat under the terebinth which was in Ofrah, that belonged unto Yo’ash Avi Ezri; and his son Gidon was beating out wheat in the winepress, to hide it from Midyan. 12And the Malakh יהוה appeared unto him, and said unto him, ” יהוה is with you, you mighty man of valor.” 13And Gidon said unto him, “Oh, My Adon, if יהוה is with us, why then is all this befallen us? And where are all His wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, ‘Did not יהוה bring us up from Mitzrayim’?” But now יהוה has cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midyan.” 14And יהוה turned towards him, and said, “Go in this your might, and save Yisra’el from the hand of Midyan; have not I sent you?” 15And he said unto him, “Oh, My Adon, wherewith shall I save Yisra’el? Behold, my family is the poorest in Menasheh, and I am the least in my father’s house.” 16And יהוה said unto him, “Surely I will be with you, and you will smite Midyan as one man.” 17And he said unto him, “If now I have found favor in your sight, then show me a sign that it is you that talks with me. 18Depart not hence, I pray, until I come unto you, and bring forth my present, and lay it before you.”And he said, “I will tarry until you come back.” 19And Gidon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an efah of meal; the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the terebinth, and presented it.
20And the Malakh HaElohim said unto him, “Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth.” And he did so. 21Then the Malakh יהוה put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there went up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and the Malakh יהוה departed out of his sight. 22And Gidon saw that he was the Malakh יהוה ; and Gidon said, “Alas, Adonai יהוה ! Forasmuch as I have seen the Malakh יהוה face to face!” 23And יהוה said unto him, “Shalom L’kha; fear not; you shall not die.” 24Then Gidon built a Mizbe’akh there unto יהוה , and called it ‘ יהוה Shalom’; unto this day it is yet in Ofrah of Avi Ezri.
25And it came to pass the same night, that יהוה said unto him, “Take your father’s bullock, and the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Ba’al that your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is by it, 26and build an altar unto יהוה your Elohim upon the top of this stronghold, in the ordered place, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt-offering with the wood of the Asherah which you shall cut down.” 27Then Gidon took ten men of his servants, and did as יהוה had spoken unto him; and it came to pass, because he feared his father’s household and the men of the city, so that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night. 28And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Ba’al was broken down, and the Asherah was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built. 29And they said one to another, “Who has done this thing?” And when they inquired and asked, they said, “Gidon Ben Yo’ash has done this thing.” 30Then the men of the city said unto Yo’ash, “Bring out your son, that he may die, because he has broken down the altar of Ba’al, and because he has cut down the Asherah that was by it.” 31And Yo’ash said unto all that stood against him, “Will you contend for Ba’al? Or will you save him? He that will contend for him, shall be put to death before morning; if he is a god, let him contend for himself, because one has broken down his altar.” 32Therefore on that day he was called Yeru-Ba’al, saying, “Let Ba’al contend against him, because he has broken down his altar.”
33Now all Midyan and Amalek and the children of the east assembled themselves together; and they passed over, and pitched in the valley of Yizre’el. 34But the Ru’akh of יהוה clothed Gidon; and he blew a horn; and Avi Ezer was gathered together after him. 35And he sent messengers throughout all Menasheh; and they also were gathered together after him; and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zevulun, and unto Naftali; and they came up to meet them. 36And Gidon said unto Elohim, ‘If You will save Yisra’el by my hand, as You have spoken, 37behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing-floor; if there is dew on the fleece only, and it is dry upon all the ground, then shall I know that You will save Yisra’el by my hand, as You have spoken.” 38And it was so; for he rose up early on the morrow, and pressed the fleece together, and wrung dew out of the fleece, a bowlful of water. 39And Gidon said unto Elohim, “Let not Your anger be kindled against me, and I will speak but this once: let me make trial, I pray, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.” 40And Elohim did so that night; for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.
אוַיַּעֲשׂוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל הָרַע בְּעֵינֵי יהוה ; וַיִּתְּנֵם יהוה בְּיַד מִדְיָן שֶׁבַע שָׁנִים. בוַתָּעָז יַד מִדְיָן עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל; מִפְּנֵי מִדְיָן עָשׂוּ לָהֶם בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת הַמִּנְהָרוֹת אֲשֶׁר בֶּהָרִים וְאֶת הַמְּעָרוֹת וְאֶת הַמְּצָדוֹת. גוְהָיָה אִם זָרַע יִשְׂרָאֵל וְעָלָה מִדְיָן וַעֲמָלֵק וּבְנֵי קֶדֶם וְעָלוּ עָלָיו. דוַיַּחֲנוּ עֲלֵיהֶם וַיַּשְׁחִיתוּ אֶת יְבוּל הָאָרֶץ עַד בּוֹאֲךָ עַזָּה; וְלֹא יַשְׁאִירוּ מִחְיָה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל וְשֶׂה וָשׁוֹר וַחֲמוֹר. הכִּי הֵם וּמִקְנֵיהֶם יַעֲלוּ וְאָהֳלֵיהֶם יבאו (וּבָאוּ) כְדֵי אַרְבֶּה לָרֹב וְלָהֶם וְלִגְמַלֵּיהֶם אֵין מִסְפָּר; וַיָּבֹאוּ בָאָרֶץ לְשַׁחֲתָהּ. ווַיִּדַּל יִשְׂרָאֵל מְאֹד מִפְּנֵי מִדְיָן; וַיִּזְעֲקוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל יהוה .
זוַיְהִי כִּי זָעֲקוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל יהוה עַל אֹדוֹת מִדְיָן. חוַיִּשְׁלַח יהוה אִישׁ נָבִיא אֶל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם כֹּה אָמַר יהוה אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אָנֹכִי הֶעֱלֵיתִי אֶתְכֶם מִמִּצְרַיִם וָאֹצִיא אֶתְכֶם מִבֵּית עֲבָדִים. טוָאַצִּל אֶתְכֶם מִיַּד מִצְרַיִם וּמִיַּד כָּל לֹחֲצֵיכֶם; וָאֲגָרֵשׁ אוֹתָם מִפְּנֵיכֶם וָאֶתְּנָה לָכֶם אֶת אַרְצָם. יוָאֹמְרָה לָכֶם אֲנִי יהוה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם לֹא תִירְאוּ אֶת אֱלֹהֵי הָאֱמֹרִי אֲשֶׁר אַתֶּם יוֹשְׁבִים בְּאַרְצָם; וְלֹא שְׁמַעְתֶּם בְּקוֹלִי.
יאוַיָּבֹא מַלְאַךְ יהוה וַיֵּשֶׁב תַּחַת הָאֵלָה אֲשֶׁר בְּעָפְרָה אֲשֶׁר לְיוֹאָשׁ אֲבִי הָעֶזְרִי; וְגִדְעוֹן בְּנוֹ חֹבֵט חִטִּים בַּגַּת לְהָנִיס מִפְּנֵי מִדְיָן. יבוַיֵּרָא אֵלָיו מַלְאַךְ יהוה ; וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו יהוה עִמְּךָ גִּבּוֹר הֶחָיִל. יגוַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו גִּדְעוֹן בִּי אֲדֹנִי וְיֵשׁ יהוה עִמָּנוּ וְלָמָּה מְצָאַתְנוּ כָּל זֹאת; וְאַיֵּה כָל נִפְלְאֹתָיו אֲשֶׁר סִפְּרוּ לָנוּ אֲבוֹתֵינוּ לֵאמֹר הֲלֹא מִמִּצְרַיִם הֶעֱלָנוּ יהוה וְעַתָּה נְטָשָׁנוּ יהוה וַיִּתְּנֵנוּ בְּכַף מִדְיָן. ידוַיִּפֶן אֵלָיו יהוה וַיֹּאמֶר לֵךְ בְּכֹחֲךָ זֶה וְהוֹשַׁעְתָּ אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל מִכַּף מִדְיָן: הֲלֹא שְׁלַחְתִּיךָ. טווַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו בִּי אֲדֹנָי בַּמָּה אוֹשִׁיעַ אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל; הִנֵּה אַלְפִּי הַדַּל בִּמְנַשֶּׁה וְאָנֹכִי הַצָּעִיר בְּבֵית אָבִי. טזוַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו יהוה כִּי אֶהְיֶה עִמָּךְ; וְהִכִּיתָ אֶת מִדְיָן כְּאִישׁ אֶחָד. יזוַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו אִם נָא מָצָאתִי חֵן בְּעֵינֶיךָ; וְעָשִׂיתָ לִּי אוֹת שָׁאַתָּה מְדַבֵּר עִמִּי. יחאַל נָא תָמֻשׁ מִזֶּה עַד בֹּאִי אֵלֶיךָ וְהֹצֵאתִי אֶת מִנְחָתִי וְהִנַּחְתִּי לְפָנֶיךָ; וַיֹּאמַר אָנֹכִי אֵשֵׁב עַד שׁוּבֶךָ. יטוְגִדְעוֹן בָּא וַיַּעַשׂ גְּדִי עִזִּים וְאֵיפַת קֶמַח מַצּוֹת הַבָּשָׂר שָׂם בַּסַּל וְהַמָּרַק שָׂם בַּפָּרוּר; וַיּוֹצֵא אֵלָיו אֶל תַּחַת הָאֵלָה וַיַּגַּשׁ.
כוַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו מַלְאַךְ הָאֱלֹהִים קַח אֶת הַבָּשָׂר וְאֶת הַמַּצּוֹת וְהַנַּח אֶל הַסֶּלַע הַלָּז וְאֶת הַמָּרַק שְׁפוֹךְ; וַיַּעַשׂ כֵּן. כאוַיִּשְׁלַח מַלְאַךְ יהוה אֶת קְצֵה הַמִּשְׁעֶנֶת אֲשֶׁר בְּיָדוֹ וַיִּגַּע בַּבָּשָׂר וּבַמַּצּוֹת; וַתַּעַל הָאֵשׁ מִן הַצּוּר וַתֹּאכַל אֶת הַבָּשָׂר וְאֶת הַמַּצּוֹת וּמַלְאַךְ יהוה הָלַךְ מֵעֵינָיו. כבוַיַּרְא גִּדְעוֹן כִּי מַלְאַךְ יהוה הוּא; וַיֹּאמֶר גִּדְעוֹן אֲהָהּ אֲדֹנָי יהוה כִּי עַל כֵּן רָאִיתִי מַלְאַךְ יהוה פָּנִים אֶל פָּנִים. כגוַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ יהוה שָׁלוֹם לְךָ אַל תִּירָא : לֹא תָּמוּת. כדוַיִּבֶן שָׁם גִּדְעוֹן מִזְבֵּחַ לַיהוה וַיִּקְרָא לוֹ יהוה שָׁלוֹם; עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה עוֹדֶנּוּ בְּעָפְרָת אֲבִי הָעֶזְרִי.
כהוַיְהִי בַּלַּיְלָה הַהוּא וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ יהוה קַח אֶת פַּר הַשּׁוֹר אֲשֶׁר לְאָבִיךָ וּפַר הַשֵּׁנִי שֶׁבַע שָׁנִים; וְהָרַסְתָּ אֶת מִזְבַּח הַבַּעַל אֲשֶׁר לְאָבִיךָ וְאֶת הָאֲשֵׁרָה אֲשֶׁר עָלָיו תִּכְרֹת. כווּבָנִיתָ מִזְבֵּחַ לַיהוה אֱלֹהֶיךָ עַל רֹאשׁ הַמָּעוֹז הַזֶּה בַּמַּעֲרָכָה; וְלָקַחְתָּ אֶת הַפָּר הַשֵּׁנִי וְהַעֲלִיתָ עוֹלָה בַּעֲצֵי הָאֲשֵׁרָה אֲשֶׁר תִּכְרֹת. כזוַיִּקַּח גִּדְעוֹן עֲשָׂרָה אֲנָשִׁים מֵעֲבָדָיו וַיַּעַשׂ כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר אֵלָיו יהוה ; וַיְהִי כַּאֲשֶׁר יָרֵא אֶת בֵּית אָבִיו וְאֶת אַנְשֵׁי הָעִיר מֵעֲשׂוֹת יוֹמָם וַיַּעַשׂ לָיְלָה. כחוַיַּשְׁכִּימוּ אַנְשֵׁי הָעִיר בַּבֹּקֶר וְהִנֵּה נֻתַּץ מִזְבַּח הַבַּעַל וְהָאֲשֵׁרָה אֲשֶׁר עָלָיו כֹּרָתָה; וְאֵת הַפָּר הַשֵּׁנִי הֹעֲלָה עַל הַמִּזְבֵּחַ הַבָּנוּי. כטוַיֹּאמְרוּ אִישׁ אֶל רֵעֵהוּ מִי עָשָׂה הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה; וַיִּדְרְשׁוּ וַיְבַקְשׁוּ וַיֹּאמְרוּ גִּדְעוֹן בֶּן יוֹאָשׁ עָשָׂה הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה. לוַיֹּאמְרוּ אַנְשֵׁי הָעִיר אֶל יוֹאָשׁ הוֹצֵא אֶת בִּנְךָ וְיָמֹת: כִּי נָתַץ אֶת מִזְבַּח הַבַּעַל וְכִי כָרַת הָאֲשֵׁרָה אֲשֶׁר עָלָיו. לאוַיֹּאמֶר יוֹאָשׁ לְכֹל אֲשֶׁר עָמְדוּ עָלָיו הַאַתֶּם תְּרִיבוּן לַבַּעַל אִם אַתֶּם תּוֹשִׁיעוּן אוֹתוֹ אֲשֶׁר יָרִיב לוֹ יוּמַת עַד הַבֹּקֶר; אִם אֱלֹהִים הוּא יָרֶב לוֹ כִּי נָתַץ אֶת מִזְבְּחוֹ. לבוַיִּקְרָא לוֹ בַיּוֹם הַהוּא יְרֻבַּעַל לֵאמֹר: יָרֶב בּוֹ הַבַּעַל כִּי נָתַץ אֶת מִזְבְּחוֹ.
לגוְכָל מִדְיָן וַעֲמָלֵק וּבְנֵי קֶדֶם נֶאֶסְפוּ יַחְדָּו; וַיַּעַבְרוּ וַיַּחֲנוּ בְּעֵמֶק יִזְרְעֶאל. לדוְרוּחַ יהוה לָבְשָׁה אֶת גִּדְעוֹן; וַיִּתְקַע בַּשּׁוֹפָר וַיִּזָּעֵק אֲבִיעֶזֶר אַחֲרָיו. להוּמַלְאָכִים שָׁלַח בְּכָל מְנַשֶּׁה וַיִּזָּעֵק גַּם הוּא אַחֲרָיו; וּמַלְאָכִים שָׁלַח בְּאָשֵׁר וּבִזְבֻלוּן וּבְנַפְתָּלִי וַיַּעֲלוּ לִקְרָאתָם. לווַיֹּאמֶר גִּדְעוֹן אֶל הָאֱלֹהִים: אִם יֶשְׁךָ מוֹשִׁיעַ בְּיָדִי אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבַּרְתָּ. לזהִנֵּה אָנֹכִי מַצִּיג אֶת גִּזַּת הַצֶּמֶר בַּגֹּרֶן: אִם טַל יִהְיֶה עַל הַגִּזָּה לְבַדָּהּ וְעַל כָּל הָאָרֶץ חֹרֶב וְיָדַעְתִּי כִּי תוֹשִׁיעַ בְּיָדִי אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבַּרְתָּ. לחוַיְהִי כֵן וַיַּשְׁכֵּם מִמָּחֳרָת וַיָּזַר אֶת הַגִּזָּה; וַיִּמֶץ טַל מִן הַגִּזָּה מְלוֹא הַסֵּפֶל מָיִם. לטוַיֹּאמֶר גִּדְעוֹן אֶל הָאֱלֹהִים אַל יִחַר אַפְּךָ בִּי וַאֲדַבְּרָה אַךְ הַפָּעַם; אֲנַסֶּה נָּא רַק הַפַּעַם בַּגִּזָּה יְהִי נָא חֹרֶב אֶל הַגִּזָּה לְבַדָּהּ וְעַל כָּל הָאָרֶץ יִהְיֶה טָּל. מוַיַּעַשׂ אֱלֹהִים כֵּן בַּלַּיְלָה הַהוּא; וַיְהִי חֹרֶב אֶל הַגִּזָּה לְבַדָּהּ וְעַל כָּל הָאָרֶץ הָיָה טָל.
