1Then Yehoshua called the Re’uveni, and the Gadi, and half the tribe of Menasheh, 2and said unto them, “You have kept all that Moshe the servant of יהוה commanded you, and have hearkened unto my voice in all that I commanded you; 3you have not left your brethren these many days unto this day, but have kept the charge of the Mitzvah of יהוה your Elohim. 4And now יהוה your Elohim has given rest unto your brethren, as He spoke unto them; therefore now turn, and get unto your tents, unto the land of your possession, which Moshe the servant of יהוה gave you beyond the Yarden. 5Only take diligent heed to do the Mitzvah and the Torah, which Moshe the servant of יהוה commanded you, to love יהוה your Elohim, and to walk in all His ways, and to keep His Mitzvot, and to cleave unto Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.” 6So Yehoshua blessed them, and sent them away; and they went unto their tents.
7Now to the one half of the tribe of Menasheh Moshe had given inheritance in Bashan; but unto the other half Yehoshua gave among their brethren beyond the Yarden westward. Moreover when Yehoshua sent them away unto their tents, he blessed them, 8and spoke unto them, saying, “Return with much wealth unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much raiment; divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren.”
9And B’nei Re’uven and B’nei Gad and half the tribe of Menasheh returned, and departed from B’nei Yisra’el out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Kena’an, to go unto the land of Gilad, to the land of their possession, which they possessed, according to the direction of יהוה by the hand of Moshe. 10And when they came unto the region about the Yarden, that is in the land of Kena’an, B’nei Re’uven and B’nei Gad and half the tribe of Menasheh built there an altar by the Yarden, a great altar to look upon. 11And B’nei Yisra’el heard say, “Behold, B’nei Re’uven and B’nei Gad and half the tribe of Menasheh have built an altar in the forefront of the land of Kena’an, in the region about the Yarden, on the side that pertains to B’nei Yisra’el.” 12And when B’nei Yisra’el heard of it, the whole assembly of B’nei Yisra’el gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up against them to war.
13And B’nei Yisra’el sent unto B’nei Re’uven, and to B’nei Gad, and to half the tribe of Menasheh, into the land of Gilad, Pin’khas Ben El Azar HaKohen; 14and with him ten princes, one prince of a fathers’ house for each of the tribes of Yisra’el; and they were every one of them head of their fathers’ houses among the thousands of Yisra’el. 15And they came unto B’nei Re’uven, and to B’nei Gad, and to half the tribe of Menasheh, unto the land of Gilad, and they spoke with them, saying, 16“Thus says the whole assembly of יהוה , ‘What treachery is this that you have committed against the Elohim of Yisra’el, to turn away this day from following יהוה , in that you have built yourself an altar, to rebel this day against יהוה ? Is17 the iniquity of Pe’or too little for us, from which we have not cleansed ourselves unto this day, although there came a plague upon the assembly of יהוה , that18 you must turn away this day from following יהוה ? And it will be, seeing you rebel today against יהוה , that tomorrow He will be wroth with the whole assembly of Yisra’el. 19However, if the land of your possession is unclean, then pass over unto the land of the possession of יהוה , wherein the Mishkan יהוה dwells, and take possession among us; but rebel not against יהוה , nor rebel against us, in building you an altar besides the Mizbe’akh of יהוה our Elohim. 20Did not Akhan Ben Zerakh commit a trespass concerning the devoted thing, and wrath fell upon all the assembly of Yisra’el? And that man perished not alone in his iniquity’.”
21Then B’nei Re’uven and B’nei Gad and half the tribe of Menasheh answered, and spoke unto the heads of the thousands of Yisra’el, 22“Elohim, Elohim, יהוה , Elohim, Elohim, יהוה , He knows, and Yisra’el he shall know; if it is in rebellion, or if in treachery against יהוה , do not save us this day, 23that we have built us an altar to turn away from following יהוה ; or if to offer thereon Olot or Minkhah, or if to offer sacrifices of Sh’lamim thereon, let יהוה Himself require it; 24and if we have not rather out of anxiety about a matter done this, saying, ‘In time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, ‘What have you to do with יהוה Elohei Yisra’el?’ ‘ 25For יהוה has made the Yarden a border between us and you, you B’nei Re’uven and B’nei Gad; you have no portion in יהוה ; so might your children make our children cease from fearing יהוה . Therefore26 we said, ‘Let us now prepare to build us a Mizbe’akh, not for an Olah, nor for sacrifice’; 27but it shall be a witness between us and you, and between our generations after us, that we may do the service of יהוה before Him with our Olot, and with our sacrifices, and with our Sh’lamim; that your sons may not say to our sons in time to come, ‘You have no portion in יהוה . Therefore 28we said, ‘It shall be, when they so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we shall say, ‘Behold the pattern of the Mizbe’akh of יהוה , which our fathers made, not for Olot, nor for sacrifice; but it is a witness between us and you’.’ 29Far be it from us that we should rebel against יהוה , and turn away this day from following יהוה , to build an altar for burnt-offering, for meal-offering, or for sacrifice, besides the Mizbe’akh of יהוה our Elohim that is before His Mishkan.”
30And when Pin’khas the Kohen, and the princes of the assembly, even the heads of the thousands of Yisra’el that were with him, heard the words that B’nei Re’uven and B’nei Gad and B’nei Menasheh spoke, it pleased them well. 31And Pin’khas Ben El Azar HaKohen said unto B’nei Re’uven, and to B’nei Gad, and to B’nei Menasheh, “This day we know that יהוה is in the midst of us, because you have not committed this treachery against יהוה ; now have you delivered B’nei Yisra’el out of the hand of יהוה .” And32 Pin’khas Ben El Azar HaKohen, and the princes, returned from B’nei Re’uven, and from B’nei Gad, out of the land of Gilad, unto the land of Kena’an, to B’nei Yisra’el, and brought them back word. 33And the thing pleased B’nei Yisra’el; and B’nei Yisra’el blessed Elohim, and spoke no more of going up against them to war, to destroy the land wherein B’nei Re’uven and B’nei Gad dwelt. 34And B’nei Re’uven and B’nei Gad called the Mizbe’akh, “For it is a witness between us that יהוה is Elohim.”
אאָז יִקְרָא יְהוֹשֻׁעַ לָראוּבֵנִי וְלַגָּדִי ולַחֲצִי מַטֵּה מְנַשֶּׁה. בוַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם אַתֶּם שְׁמַרְתֶּם אֵת כָּל אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה אֶתְכֶם מֹשֶׁה עֶבֶד יהוה ; וַתִּשְׁמְעוּ בְקוֹלִי לְכֹל אֲשֶׁר צִוִּיתִי אֶתְכֶם. גלֹא עֲזַבְתֶּם אֶת אֲחֵיכֶם זֶה יָמִים רַבִּים עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה; וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם אֶת מִשְׁמֶרֶת מִצְוַת יהוה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם. דוְעַתָּה הֵנִיחַ יהוה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם לַאֲחֵיכֶם כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר לָהֶם; וְעַתָּה פְּנוּ וּלְכוּ לָכֶם לְאָהֳלֵיכֶם אֶל אֶרֶץ אֲחֻזַּתְכֶם אֲשֶׁר נָתַן לָכֶם מֹשֶׁה עֶבֶד יהוה בְּעֵבֶר הַיַּרְדֵּן. הרַק שִׁמְרוּ מְאֹד לַעֲשׂוֹת אֶת הַמִּצְוָה וְאֶת הַתּוֹרָה אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה אֶתְכֶם מֹשֶׁה עֶבֶד יהוה לְאַהֲבָה אֶת יהוה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם וְלָלֶכֶת בְּכָל דְּרָכָיו וְלִשְׁמֹר מִצְוֹתָיו וּלְדָבְקָה בוֹ; וּלְעָבְדוֹ בְּכָל לְבַבְכֶם וּבְכָל נַפְשְׁכֶם. ווַיְבָרְכֵם יְהוֹשֻׁעַ; וַיְשַׁלְּחֵם וַיֵּלְכוּ אֶל אָהֳלֵיהֶם.
זוְלַחֲצִי שֵׁבֶט הַמְנַשֶּׁה נָתַן מֹשֶׁה בַּבָּשָׁן וּלְחֶצְיוֹ נָתַן יְהוֹשֻׁעַ עִם אֲחֵיהֶם מעבר (בְּעֵבֶר) הַיַּרְדֵּן יָמָּה; וְגַם כִּי שִׁלְּחָם יְהוֹשֻׁעַ אֶל אָהֳלֵיהֶם וַיְבָרְכֵם. חוַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם לֵאמֹר בִּנְכָסִים רַבִּים שׁוּבוּ אֶל אָהֳלֵיכֶם וּבְמִקְנֶה רַב מְאֹד בְּכֶסֶף וּבְזָהָב וּבִנְחֹשֶׁת וּבְבַרְזֶל וּבִשְׂלָמוֹת הַרְבֵּה מְאֹד; חִלְקוּ שְׁלַל אֹיְבֵיכֶם עִם אֲחֵיכֶם.
טוַיָּשֻׁבוּ וַיֵּלְכוּ בְּנֵי רְאוּבֵן וּבְנֵי גָד וַחֲצִי שֵׁבֶט הַמְנַשֶּׁה מֵאֵת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל מִשִּׁלֹה אֲשֶׁר בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנָעַן לָלֶכֶת אֶל אֶרֶץ הַגִּלְעָד אֶל אֶרֶץ אֲחֻזָּתָם אֲשֶׁר נֹאחֲזוּ בָהּ עַל פִּי יהוה בְּיַד מֹשֶׁה. יוַיָּבֹאוּ אֶל גְּלִילוֹת הַיַּרְדֵּן אֲשֶׁר בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנָעַן; וַיִּבְנוּ בְנֵי רְאוּבֵן וּבְנֵי גָד וַחֲצִי שֵׁבֶט הַמְנַשֶּׁה שָׁם מִזְבֵּחַ עַל הַיַּרְדֵּן מִזְבֵּחַ גָּדוֹל לְמַרְאֶה. יאוַיִּשְׁמְעוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לֵאמֹר: הִנֵּה בָנוּ בְנֵי רְאוּבֵן וּבְנֵי גָד וַחֲצִי שֵׁבֶט הַמְנַשֶּׁה אֶת הַמִּזְבֵּחַ אֶל מוּל אֶרֶץ כְּנַעַן אֶל גְּלִילוֹת הַיַּרְדֵּן אֶל עֵבֶר בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. יבוַיִּשְׁמְעוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיִּקָּהֲלוּ כָּל עֲדַת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל שִׁלֹה לַעֲלוֹת עֲלֵיהֶם לַצָּבָא.
יגוַיִּשְׁלְחוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל בְּנֵי רְאוּבֵן וְאֶל בְּנֵי גָד וְאֶל חֲצִי שֵׁבֶט מְנַשֶּׁה אֶל אֶרֶץ הַגִּלְעָד: אֶת פִּינְחָס בֶּן אֶלְעָזָר הַכֹּהֵן. ידוַעֲשָׂרָה נְשִׂאִים עִמּוֹ נָשִׂיא אֶחָד נָשִׂיא אֶחָד לְבֵית אָב לְכֹל מַטּוֹת יִשְׂרָאֵל; וְאִישׁ רֹאשׁ בֵּית אֲבוֹתָם הֵמָּה לְאַלְפֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. טווַיָּבֹאוּ אֶל בְּנֵי רְאוּבֵן וְאֶל בְּנֵי גָד וְאֶל חֲצִי שֵׁבֶט מְנַשֶּׁה אֶל אֶרֶץ הַגִּלְעָד; וַיְדַבְּרוּ אִתָּם לֵאמֹר, טזכֹּה אָמְרוּ כֹּל עֲדַת יהוה מָה הַמַּעַל הַזֶּה אֲשֶׁר מְעַלְתֶּם בֵּאלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לָשׁוּב הַיּוֹם מֵאַחֲרֵי יהוה בִּבְנוֹתְכֶם לָכֶם מִזְבֵּחַ לִמְרָדְכֶם הַיּוֹם בַּיהוה . יזהַמְעַט לָנוּ אֶת עֲוֹן פְּעוֹר אֲשֶׁר לֹא הִטַּהַרְנוּ מִמֶּנּוּ עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה; וַיְהִי הַנֶּגֶף בַּעֲדַת יהוה . יחוְאַתֶּם תָּשֻׁבוּ הַיּוֹם מֵאַחֲרֵי יהוה ; וְהָיָה אַתֶּם תִּמְרְדוּ הַיּוֹם בַּיהוה וּמָחָר אֶל כָּל עֲדַת יִשְׂרָאֵל יִקְצֹף. יטוְאַךְ אִם טְמֵאָה אֶרֶץ אֲחֻזַּתְכֶם עִבְרוּ לָכֶם אֶל אֶרֶץ אֲחֻזַּת יהוה אֲשֶׁר שָׁכַן שָׁם מִשְׁכַּן יהוה וְהֵאָחֲזוּ בְּתוֹכֵנוּ; וּבַיהוה אַל תִּמְרֹדוּ וְאֹתָנוּ אַל תִּמְרֹדוּ בִּבְנֹתְכֶם לָכֶם מִזְבֵּחַ מִבַּלְעֲדֵי מִזְבַּח יהוה אֱלֹהֵינוּ. כהֲלוֹא עָכָן בֶּן זֶרַח מָעַל מַעַל בַּחֵרֶם וְעַל כָּל עֲדַת יִשְׂרָאֵל הָיָה קָצֶף: וְהוּא אִישׁ אֶחָד לֹא גָוַע בַּעֲוֹנוֹ.
כאוַיַּעֲנוּ בְּנֵי רְאוּבֵן וּבְנֵי גָד וַחֲצִי שֵׁבֶט הַמְנַשֶּׁה; וַיְדַבְּרוּ אֶת רָאשֵׁי אַלְפֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. כבאֵל אֱלֹהִים יהוה אֵל אֱלֹהִים יהוה הוּא יֹדֵעַ וְיִשְׂרָאֵל הוּא יֵדָע: אִם בְּמֶרֶד וְאִם בְּמַעַל בַּיהוה אַל תּוֹשִׁיעֵנוּ הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה. כגלִבְנוֹת לָנוּ מִזְבֵּחַ לָשׁוּב מֵאַחֲרֵי יהוה ; וְאִם לְהַעֲלוֹת עָלָיו עוֹלָה וּמִנְחָה וְאִם לַעֲשׂוֹת עָלָיו זִבְחֵי שְׁלָמִים יהוה הוּא יְבַקֵּשׁ. כדוְאִם לֹא מִדְּאָגָה מִדָּבָר עָשִׂינוּ אֶת זֹאת לֵאמֹר: מָחָר יֹאמְרוּ בְנֵיכֶם לְבָנֵינוּ לֵאמֹר מַה לָּכֶם וְלַיהוה אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. כהוּגְבוּל נָתַן יהוה בֵּינֵנוּ וּבֵינֵיכֶם בְּנֵי רְאוּבֵן וּבְנֵי גָד אֶת הַיַּרְדֵּן אֵין לָכֶם חֵלֶק בַּיהוה ; וְהִשְׁבִּיתוּ בְנֵיכֶם אֶת בָּנֵינוּ לְבִלְתִּי יְרֹא אֶת יהוה . כווַנֹּאמֶר נַעֲשֶׂה נָּא לָנוּ לִבְנוֹת אֶת הַמִּזְבֵּחַ: לֹא לְעוֹלָה וְלֹא לְזָבַח. כזכִּי עֵד הוּא בֵּינֵינוּ וּבֵינֵיכֶם וּבֵין דֹּרוֹתֵינוּ אַחֲרֵינוּ לַעֲבֹד אֶת עֲבֹדַת יהוה לְפָנָיו בְּעֹלוֹתֵינוּ וּבִזְבָחֵינוּ וּבִשְׁלָמֵינוּ: וְלֹא יֹאמְרוּ בְנֵיכֶם מָחָר לְבָנֵינוּ אֵין לָכֶם חֵלֶק בַּיהוה . כחוַנֹּאמֶר וְהָיָה כִּי יֹאמְרוּ אֵלֵינוּ וְאֶל דֹּרֹתֵינוּ מָחָר; וְאָמַרְנוּ רְאוּ אֶת תַּבְנִית מִזְבַּח יהוה אֲשֶׁר עָשׂוּ אֲבוֹתֵינוּ לֹא לְעוֹלָה וְלֹא לְזֶבַח כִּי עֵד הוּא בֵּינֵינוּ וּבֵינֵיכֶם. כטחָלִילָה לָּנוּ מִמֶּנּוּ לִמְרֹד בַּיהוה וְלָשׁוּב הַיּוֹם מֵאַחֲרֵי יהוה לִבְנוֹת מִזְבֵּחַ לְעֹלָה לְמִנְחָה וּלְזָבַח מִלְּבַד מִזְבַּח יהוה אֱלֹהֵינוּ אֲשֶׁר לִפְנֵי מִשְׁכָּנוֹ.
לוַיִּשְׁמַע פִּינְחָס הַכֹּהֵן וּנְשִׂיאֵי הָעֵדָה וְרָאשֵׁי אַלְפֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֲשֶׁר אִתּוֹ אֶת הַדְּבָרִים אֲשֶׁר דִּבְּרוּ בְּנֵי רְאוּבֵן וּבְנֵי גָד וּבְנֵי מְנַשֶּׁה; וַיִּיטַב בְּעֵינֵיהֶם. לאוַיֹּאמֶר פִּינְחָס בֶּן אֶלְעָזָר הַכֹּהֵן אֶל בְּנֵי רְאוּבֵן וְאֶל בְּנֵי גָד וְאֶל בְּנֵי מְנַשֶּׁה הַיּוֹם יָדַעְנוּ כִּי בְתוֹכֵנוּ יהוה אֲשֶׁר לֹא מְעַלְתֶּם בַּיהוה הַמַּעַל הַזֶּה; אָז הִצַּלְתֶּם אֶת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל מִיַּד יהוה . לבוַיָּשָׁב פִּינְחָס בֶּן אֶלְעָזָר הַכֹּהֵן וְהַנְּשִׂיאִים מֵאֵת בְּנֵי רְאוּבֵן וּמֵאֵת בְּנֵי גָד מֵאֶרֶץ הַגִּלְעָד אֶל אֶרֶץ כְּנַעַן אֶל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיָּשִׁבוּ אוֹתָם דָּבָר. לגוַיִּיטַב הַדָּבָר בְּעֵינֵי בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיְבָרְכוּ אֱלֹהִים בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל; וְלֹא אָמְרוּ לַעֲלוֹת עֲלֵיהֶם לַצָּבָא לְשַׁחֵת אֶת הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר בְּנֵי רְאוּבֵן וּבְנֵי גָד יֹשְׁבִים בָּהּ. לדוַיִּקְרְאוּ בְּנֵי רְאוּבֵן וּבְנֵי גָד לַמִּזְבֵּחַ: כִּי עֵד הוּא בֵּינֹתֵינוּ כִּי יהוה הָאֱלֹהִים.
