Yehoshua 7 – יהושע ז

1But B’nei Yisra’el committed a trespass concerning the devoted thing; for Akhan Ben Karmi, Ben Zavdi, Ben Zerakh, of the tribe of Yehudah, took of the devoted thing; and the anger of  יהוה  was kindled against B’nei Yisra’el. 2And Yehoshua sent men from Yerekho to Ai, which is beside Beit Aven, on the east side of Beit El, and spoke unto them, saying, “Go up and spy out the land.” And the men went up and spied out Ai. 3And they returned to Yehoshua, and said unto him, “Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; make not all the people to toil there; for they are but few.” 4So there went up there of the people about three thousand men; and they fled before the men of Ai. 5And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty-six men; and they chased them from before the gate even unto Shevarim, and smote them at the descent; and the hearts of the people melted and became as water. 6And Yehoshua tore his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the Aron of  יהוה  until the evening, he and the elders of Yisra’el; and they put dust upon their heads. 7And Yehoshua said, “Alas, Adonai  יהוה , why have You at all brought this people over the Yarden, to deliver us into the hand of the Amori, to cause us to perish? Would that we had been content and dwelt beyond the Yarden! 8Oh, Adonai, what shall I say, after that Yisra’el has turned their backs before their enemies! 9For when the Kena’ani and all the inhabitants of the land hear of it, they will encompass us round, and cut off our name from the earth; and what will You do for Your great name?” 10And  יהוה  said unto Yehoshua, “Get yourself up; why, now, are you fallen upon your face? 11Yisra’el has sinned; yes, they have even transgressed My Brit which I commanded them; yes, they have even taken of the devoted thing; and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have even put it among their own stuff. 12Therefore B’nei Yisra’el cannot stand before their enemies, they turn their backs before their enemies, because they are become accursed; I will not be with you any more, except you destroy the accursed from among you. 13Up, consecrate the people, and say, ‘Consecrate yourselves against tomorrow; for thus says  יהוה  Elohei Yisra’el, ‘There is a curse in the midst of you, O Yisra’el; you cannot stand before your enemies, until you take away the accursed thing from among you.’ 14In the morning therefore you shall draw near by your tribes; and it shall be that the tribe which  יהוה  takes shall come near by families; and the family which  יהוה  shall take shall come near by households; and the household which  יהוה  shall take shall come near man by man. 15And it shall be that he that is taken with the devoted thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he has, because he has transgressed Brit  יהוה , and because he has wrought a wanton deed in Yisra’el’.” 16So Yehoshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Yisra’el near by their tribes; and the tribe of Yehudah was taken. 17And he brought near the family of Yehudah; and he took the family of the Zerakhi. And he brought near the family of the Zerakhi man by man; and Zavdi was taken. 18And he brought near his household man by man; and Akhan Ben Karmi, Ben Zavdi, Ben Zerakh, of the tribe of Yehudah, was taken. 19And Yehoshua said unto Akhan, “My son, give, I pray, glory to  יהוה  Elohei Yisra’el, and make confession unto Him; and tell me now what you have done; hide nothing from me.” 20And Akhan answered Yehoshua, and said,  “Of a truth, I have sinned against  יהוה  Elohei Yisra’el, and this and that have I done. 21When I saw among the spoil a goodly Shinar mantle, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.” 22So Yehoshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it. 23And they took them from the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Yehoshua, and unto all B’nei Yisra’el; and they laid them down before  יהוה . And24 Yehoshua, and all Yisra’el with him, took Akhan Ben Zerakh, and the silver, and the mantle, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his donkeys, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had; and they brought them up unto the valley of Akhor. 25And Yehoshua said, “Why have you troubled us?  יהוה  shall trouble you this day.” And all Yisra’el stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire, and stoned them with stones. 26And they raised over him a great heap of stones, unto this day; and  יהוה  turned from the fierceness of His anger. Therefore the name of that place was called the valley of Akhor, unto this day.
