Yekhezkel 33 – יחזקאל לג

1And the D’var  יהוה  came unto me, saying, 2“Ben Adam, speak to the children of your people, and say unto them, ‘When I bring the sword upon a land, if the people of the land take a man from among them, and set him for their watchman; 3if, when he sees the sword come upon the land, he blasts the shofar, and warns the people; 4then whoever hears the voice of the shofar, and does not take warning, if the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be upon his own head; 5he heard the voice of the shofar, and did not take warning, his blood shall be upon him; whereas if he had taken warning, he would have delivered his soul. 6But if the watchman sees the sword come, and does not blast the shofar, and the people are not warned, and the sword does come, and takes any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand.'”

7“So you, Ben Adam, I have set you as a watchman unto Beit Yisra’el; therefore, when you shall hear a word at My mouth, warn them from Me. 8When I say unto the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you shall surely die’, and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way; that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood will I require at your hand. 9Nevertheless, if you warn the wicked of his way to turn from it, and he turns not from his way, he shall die in his iniquity, but you have delivered your soul.”

10“Therefore, O Ben Adam, say unto Beit Yisra’el, ‘Thus you shall speak, saying, ‘Our transgressions and our sins are upon us, and we pine away in them; how then can we live?” 11Say unto them, ‘As I live, says Adonai  יהוה , I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turns from his way and lives; turn! Turn from your evil ways; for why will you die, O Beit Yisra’el?'”

12“And you, Ben Adam, say unto the children of your people, ‘The righteousness of the Tzadik shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression; and as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not stumble thereby in the day that he turns from his wickedness; neither shall he that is righteous be able to live thereby in the day that he sins. 13When I say to the righteous that he shall surely live; if he trusts in his righteousness, and commits iniquity, none of his righteous deeds shall be remembered; but for his iniquity that he has committed, for it shall he die. 14Again, when I say unto the wicked, ‘You shall surely die’; if he turns from his sin, and does justice and tzedaka: 15if the wicked restores the pledge, gives back that which he had taken by robbery, walks in the statutes of life, committing no iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die. 16None of his sins that he has committed shall be remembered against him; he has done justice and tzedaka; he shall surely live. 17Yet the children of your people say, ‘Derekh Adonai is not equal;’ but as for them, their way is not equal. 18When the Tzadik turns from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, he shall even die thereby. 19And when the wicked turns from his wickedness, and does justice and tzedaka, he shall live thereby. 20Yet you say, ‘Derekh Adonai is not equal’. O Beit Yisra’el, I will judge you, every one, after his ways.'”

21And it came to pass in the twelfth year of our captivity, in the tenth khodesh, in the fifth day of the khodesh, that one that had escaped out of Yerushalayim came unto me, saying, “The city is smitten.” 22Now the hand of  יהוה  had been upon me in the evening, before he that was escaped came; and He had opened my mouth against his coming to me in the morning; and my mouth was opened, and I was no more dumb.

23Then the D’var  יהוה  came unto me, saying, 24“Ben Adam, they that inhabit those waste places in the land of Yisra’el speak, saying, ‘Avraham was one, and he inherited the land; but we are many; the land is given us for inheritance’.  25Therefore say unto them, ‘Thus says Adonai  יהוה , ‘You eat with the blood, and lift up your eyes unto your idols, and shed blood; and shall you possess the land? 26You stand upon your sword, you work abomination, and you defile every one his neighbour’s wife; and shall you possess the land?”  27Thus shall you say unto them,  ‘Thus says Adonai  יהוה ,  ‘As I live,  surely they that are  in  the waste places shall

fall by the sword, and him that is in the open field will I give to the beasts to be devoured, and they that are in the strongholds and in the caves shall die of the pestilence. 28And I will make the land most desolate, and the pride of her power shall cease; and the mountains of Yisra’el shall be desolate, so that none shall pass through. 29Then shall they know that I am  יהוה , when I have made the land most desolate, because of all their abominations which they have committed’.'”

30“And as for you, Ben Adam, the children of your people that talk of you by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, ‘Come, I pray, and hear what is HaDavar that comes forth from  יהוה ?’ and31 they come unto you as the people comes, and sit before you as My people, and hear your words, but do not do them, for with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goes after their covetousness; 32and, lo, you are unto them as a love song of one that has a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument; so they hear your words, but they do not do them, 33when this comes to pass, behold, it comes, then shall they know that a Navi has been among them.”
