Yesha-Yahu 37 – ישעיהו לז

1And it came to pass, when king Yekhizki-Yahu heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into Beit  יהוה . And2 he sent Eliyakim, who was over the household, and Shevna the scribe, and the elders of the Kohanim, covered with sackcloth, unto Yesha-Yahu HaNavi, Ben Amotz. 3And they said unto him, “Thus says Yekhizki-Yahu, ‘This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of reproach; for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth. 4It may be that  יהוה  your Elohim will hear the words of Ravshakeh, whom the king of Ashur his master has sent to taunt the living Elohim, and will rebuke the words which  יהוה  your Elohim has heard; therefore make prayer for the remnant that is left’.” 5So the servants of Melekh Yekhizki-Yahu came to Yesha-Yahu. 6And Yesha-Yahu said unto them, “Thus shall you say to your master: ‘Thus says  יהוה : ‘Be not afraid of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Ashur have blasphemed Me. 7Behold, I will put a spirit in him, and he shall hear a rumor, and shall return unto his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land’.’ ” 8So Ravshakeh returned, and found the king of Ashur warring against Livnah; for he had heard that he was departed from Lakhish. 9And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of Kush, “He is come out to fight against you.” And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Yekhizki-Yahu, saying, 10“Thus shall you speak to Yekhizki-Yahu Melekh Yehudah, saying, ‘Let not your Elohim, in whom you trust, beguile you, saying, ‘Yerushalayim shall not be given into the hand of the king of Ashur’. 11Behold, you have heard what the kings of Ashur have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly; and shall you be delivered? 12Have the gods of the nations delivered them, which my fathers have destroyed, Gozan, and Kharan, and Retzef, and the children of Eden that were in Telasar? 13Where is the king of Khamat, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sefarvayim, of Hena, and Ivah?’ ” 14And Yekhizki-Yahu received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Yekhizki-Yahu went up unto Beit  יהוה , and spread it before  יהוה .  And15 Yekhizki-Yahu prayed unto  יהוה , saying, 16“O  יהוה  Tzeva’ot, Elohei Yisra’el, that sits upon the Keruvim, You are Elohim, even You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; You have made heaven and earth. 17Incline Your ear, O  יהוה , and hear; open Your eyes, O  יהוה , and see; and hear all the words of Sankheriv, who has sent to taunt the living Elohim. 18Of a truth,      יהוה , the kings of Ashur have laid waste all the countries, and their land, 19and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone; therefore they have destroyed them. 20Now therefore, O  יהוה  our Elohim, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You are  יהוה , even You only.” 21Then Yesha-Yahu Ben Amotz sent unto Yekhizki-Yahu, saying, “Thus says  יהוה  Elohei Yisra’el: Whereas you have prayed to Me against Sankheriv king of Ashur, 22this is the word which  יהוה  has spoken concerning him: ‘The virgin daughter of Tzion has despised you and laughed you to scorn; the daughter of Yerushalayim has shaken her head at you. 23Whom have you taunted and blasphemed? And against whom have you exalted your voice? Yes, you have lifted up your eyes on high, even against the Kadosh One of Yisra’el! 24By your servants have you taunted Adonai, and have said, ‘With the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the innermost parts of Levanon; and I have cut down the tall cedars thereof, and the choice cypress trees thereof; and I have entered into his farthest height, the forest of his fruitful field. 25I have digged and drunk water, and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of Mitzrayim’. 26Have you not heard? Long ago I made it, in ancient times I fashioned it; now have I brought it to pass, yes, it is done; that fortified cities should be laid waste into ruinous heaps. 27Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as a field of grain before it is grown up. 28But I know your sitting down,  and your going out,  and your coming in,  and  your  raging  against Me. 29Because of your raging against Me, and for that your uproar is come up into My ears, therefore will I put My hook in your nose, and My bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way by which you came. 30And this shall be the sign unto you: you shall eat this year that which grows of itself, and in the second year that which springs of the same; and in the third year sow, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruit thereof. 31And the remnant that is escaped of Beit Yehudah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward. 32For out of Yerushalayim shall go forth a remnant, and out of Har Tzion they that shall escape; the zeal of  יהוה  Tzeva’ot shall perform this’.  33Therefore, thus says  יהוה  concerning the king of Ashur, ‘He shall not come unto this city, nor shoot an arrow there, neither shall he come before it with shield, nor cast a mound against it. 34By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and he shall not come unto this city’, says  יהוה . For35 I will defend this city to save it, for My own sake, and for My servant David’s sake.”

36And the Malakh   יהוה  went forth, and smote in the camp of the AsSuryans a hundred eighty five thousand; and when men arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses. 37So Sankheriv king of Ashur departed, and went, and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh. 38And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisrokh his god, that Adramelekh and Saretzer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. And Esar Khadon his son reigned in his stead.
