Yirme-Yahu 40 – ירמיהו מ

1HaDavar, which came to Yirme-Yahu from  יהוה , after that Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him, being bound in chains, among all the captives of Yerushalayim and Yehudah, that were carried away captive unto Bavel. 2And the captain of the guard took Yirme-Yahu, and said unto him, ” יהוה  your Elohim pronounced this evil upon this place; 3and  יהוה  has brought it, and done according as He spoke; because you have sinned against  יהוה , and have not hearkened to His voice, therefore this thing is come upon you. 4And now, behold, I loose you this day from the chains which are upon your hand. If it seems good unto you to come with me into Bavel, come, and I will look well unto you; but if it seems ill unto you to come with me into Bavel, forbear; behold, all the land is before you; wherever it seems good and right unto you to go, go there.” 5Yet he would not go back. “Go back then to Gedal-Yahu Ben Akhikam, Ben Shafan, whom the king of Bavel has made governor over the cities of Yehudah, and dwell with him among the people; or go wherever it seems right unto you to go.” So the captain of the guard gave him an allowance and a present, and let him go. 6Then Yirme-Yahu went unto Gedal-Yahu Ben Akhikam to Mitzpatah, and dwelt with him among the people that were left in the land.

7Now when all the captains of the forces that were in the fields, even they and their men, heard that the king of Bavel had made Gedal-Yahu Ben Akhikam governor in the land, and had committed unto him men, and women, and children, and of the poorest of the land, of them that were not carried away captive to Bavel; 8then they came to Gedal-Yahu to Mitzpatah, even Ishma’el Ben Netan-Yahu, and Yokhanan and Yehonatan B’nei Kare’akh, and Sera-Yahu Ben Tankhumet, B’nei Efai the Netofati, and Yizan-Yahu Ben HaMa’akhati, they and their men. 9And Gedal-Yahu Ben Akhikam Ben Shafan swore unto them and to their men, saying, “Fear not to serve the Kasdim; dwell in the land, and serve the king of Bavel, and it shall be well with you. 10As for me, behold, I will dwell at Mitzpatah, to stand before the Kasdim that may come unto us; but you, gather wine, and summer fruits, and oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that you have taken.” 11Likewise when all the Yehudim that were in Mo’av, and among the children of Amon, and in Edom, and that were in all the countries, heard that the king of Bavel had left a remnant of Yehudah, and that he had set over them Gedal-Yahu Ben Akhikam, Ben Shafan, 12then all the Yehudim returned out of all places where they were driven, and came to the land of Yehudah, to Gedal-Yahu, unto Mitzpatah, and gathered wine and summer fruits in great abundance.  13Moreover Yokhanan Ben Kare’akh, and all the captains of the forces that were in the fields, came to Gedal-Yahu to Mitzpatah, 14and said unto him, “Do you know that Ba’alis the king of the children of Amon has sent Ishma’el Ben Netan-Yahu to take your life?” But Gedal-Yahu Ben Akhikam did not believe them. 15Then Yokhanan Ben Kare’akh spoke to Gedal-Yahu in Mitzpatah secretly, saying, “Let me go, I pray, and I will slay Ishma’el Ben Netan-Yahu, and no man shall know it; why should he take your life, that all the Yehudim that are gathered unto you should be scattered, and the remnant of Yehudah perish?” 16But Gedal-Yahu Ben Akhikam said unto Yokhanan Ben Kare’akh, “You shall not do this thing; for you speak falsely of Ishma’el.”
