The “Parashot” are ‘divisions’ of the Torah into sections for weekly readings in the Synagogue, taking the congregation through the whole Torah in a year. We are instructed to read the whole Torah every seven years! So, we read it each year in its parts, and in the seventh year we read the WHOLE TORAH in ONE DAY, like Ezra did for Israel when they returned to the land.
This schedule is the WHOLE portion. But, in our congregations, we do what was practiced in the Synagogues in Yeshua’s day: we read 1/3 of the portion each year, dividing each TORAH portion below into three sections per portion. Each year we read the next section. In the first year, we read the 1st portion, moving to the next portion the next year; in the fourth year we return to the first third of each portion, reaching the 3rd third in the sixth year, then, in the seventh year we read the whole Torah in ONE DAY, on Simkhat Torah.
We have added Brit Khadashah readings that are both topical and sequential, meaning, we make sure we read ALL FOUR GOSPELS each year, as well as scriptures associated with the different Torah and Haftarah portions. The Haftarah [parting] portions are selections from the Prophets that go with the topic of the Torah portion in some way, as do the additional Brit Khadashah readings.
Anyone who is faithful to the synagogue on Shabbat will have read the whole Torah and much of the scriptures in six years, and the whole thing in one day on Simkhat Torah. This helps us to study the scriptures more successfully, and brings us together in His Word.
