1And Shmu’el said unto all Yisra’el, “Behold, I have hearkened unto your voice in all that you said unto me, and have made a melekh over you. 2And now, behold, HaMelekh walks before you; and I am old and grayheaded; and, behold, my sons are with you; and I have walked before you from my youth unto this day. 3Here I am; witness against me before יהוה , and before His anointed: whose ox have I taken? Or whose donkey have I taken? Or whom have I defrauded? Or whom have I oppressed? Or of whose hand have I taken a ransom to blind my eyes therewith? And I will restore it to you.” 4And they said, “You have not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither have you taken aught of any man’s hand.” 5And he said unto them, ” יהוה is witness against you, and His anointed is witness this day, that you have not found aught in my hand.” And they said, “He is witness.”
6And Shmu’el said unto the people, “It is יהוה that made Moshe and Aharon, and that brought your fathers up out of the land of Mitzrayim. 7Now therefore stand still, that I may plead with you before יהוה concerning all the righteous acts of יהוה , which He did to you and to your fathers. 8When Ya’akov was come into Mitzrayim, then your fathers cried unto יהוה , and יהוה sent Moshe and Aharon, who brought forth your fathers out of Mitzrayim, and they were made to dwell in this place. 9But they forgot יהוה their Elohim, and He gave them over into the hand of Sisera, captain of the host of Khatzor, and into the hand of the P’lishtim, and into the hand of the king of Mo’av, and they fought against them. 10And they cried unto יהוה , and said, ‘We have sinned, because we have forsaken יהוה , and have served the Ba’alim and the Ashtarot; but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve You.’ 11And יהוה sent Yeruba’al, and Bedan, and Yiftakh, and Shmu’el, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, and you dwelt in safety. 12And when you saw that Nakhash the king of the children of Amon came against you, you said unto me, ‘Nay, but a melekh shall reign over us;’ when יהוה your Elohim was your Melekh. 13Now therefore behold HaMelekh whom you have chosen, and whom you have asked for; and, behold, יהוה has set a melekh over you. 14If you will fear יהוה , and serve Him, and hearken unto His voice, and not rebel against the direction of יהוה , then it will be that both you and also HaMelekh that reigns over you are followers of יהוה your Elohim; 15but if you will not hearken unto the voice of יהוה , but rebel against the direction of יהוה , then shall the hand of יהוה be against you, and against your fathers. 16Now therefore stand still and see this great thing, which יהוה will do before your eyes. 17Is it not wheat harvest today? I will call unto יהוה , that He may send thunder and rain; and you shall know and see that your wickedness is great, which you have done in the sight of יהוה , in asking you a melekh.” 18So Shmu’el called unto יהוה ; and יהוה sent thunder and rain that day; and all the people greatly feared יהוה and Shmu’el. 19And all the people said unto Shmu’el, “Pray for your servants unto יהוה your Elohim, that we die not; for we have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask us a melekh.” 20And Shmu’el said unto the people, “Fear not; you have indeed done all this evil; yet turn not aside from following יהוה , but serve יהוה with all your heart; 21and do not turn aside; for then should you go after vain things which cannot profit nor deliver, for they are vain. 22For יהוה will not forsake His people for His Great Name’s sake; because it has pleased יהוה to make you a people unto Himself. end Korakh
23Moreover as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against יהוה in ceasing to pray for you; but I will instruct you in the good and the right way. 24Only fear יהוה , and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider how great things He has done for you. 25But if you shall still do wickedly, you shall be swept away, both you and your melekh.”
אוַיֹּאמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל אֶל כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל הִנֵּה שָׁמַעְתִּי בְקֹלְכֶם לְכֹל אֲשֶׁר אֲמַרְתֶּם לִי; וָאַמְלִיךְ עֲלֵיכֶם מֶלֶךְ. בוְעַתָּה הִנֵּה הַמֶּלֶךְ מִתְהַלֵּךְ לִפְנֵיכֶם וַאֲנִי זָקַנְתִּי וָשַׂבְתִּי וּבָנַי הִנָּם אִתְּכֶם; וַאֲנִי הִתְהַלַּכְתִּי לִפְנֵיכֶם מִנְּעֻרַי עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה. גהִנְנִי עֲנוּ בִי נֶגֶד יהוה וְנֶגֶד מְשִׁיחוֹ אֶת שׁוֹר מִי לָקַחְתִּי וַחֲמוֹר מִי לָקַחְתִּי וְאֶת מִי עָשַׁקְתִּי אֶת מִי רַצּוֹתִי וּמִיַּד מִי לָקַחְתִּי כֹפֶר וְאַעְלִים עֵינַי בּוֹ; וְאָשִׁיב לָכֶם. דוַיֹּאמְרוּ לֹא עֲשַׁקְתָּנוּ וְלֹא רַצּוֹתָנוּ; וְלֹא לָקַחְתָּ מִיַּד אִישׁ מְאוּמָה. הוַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם עֵד יהוה בָּכֶם וְעֵד מְשִׁיחוֹ הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה כִּי לֹא מְצָאתֶם בְּיָדִי מְאוּמָה; וַיֹּאמֶר עֵד.
ווַיֹּאמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל אֶל הָעָם: יהוה אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה אֶת מֹשֶׁה וְאֶת אַהֲרֹן וַאֲשֶׁר הֶעֱלָה אֶת אֲבֹתֵיכֶם מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם. זוְעַתָּה הִתְיַצְּבוּ וְאִשָּׁפְטָה אִתְּכֶם לִפְנֵי יהוה : אֵת כָּל צִדְקוֹת יהוה אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה אִתְּכֶם וְאֶת אֲבוֹתֵיכֶם. חכַּאֲשֶׁר בָּא יַעֲקֹב מִצְרָיִם וַיִּזְעֲקוּ אֲבוֹתֵיכֶם אֶל יהוה וַיִּשְׁלַח יהוה אֶת מֹשֶׁה וְאֶת אַהֲרֹן וַיּוֹצִיאוּ אֶת אֲבֹתֵיכֶם מִמִּצְרַיִם וַיֹּשִׁבוּם בַּמָּקוֹם הַזֶּה. טוַיִּשְׁכְּחוּ אֶת יהוה אֱלֹהֵיהֶם; וַיִּמְכֹּר אֹתָם בְּיַד סִיסְרָא שַׂר צְבָא חָצוֹר וּבְיַד פְּלִשְׁתִּים וּבְיַד מֶלֶךְ מוֹאָב וַיִּלָּחֲמוּ בָּם. יוַיִּזְעֲקוּ אֶל יהוה ויאמר (וַיֹּאמְרוּ) חָטָאנוּ כִּי עָזַבְנוּ אֶת יהוה וַנַּעֲבֹד אֶת הַבְּעָלִים וְאֶת הָעַשְׁתָּרוֹת; וְעַתָּה הַצִּילֵנוּ מִיַּד אֹיְבֵינוּ וְנַעַבְדֶךָּ. יאוַיִּשְׁלַח יהוה אֶת יְרֻבַּעַל וְאֶת בְּדָן וְאֶת יִפְתָּח וְאֶת שְׁמוּאֵל; וַיַּצֵּל אֶתְכֶם מִיַּד אֹיְבֵיכֶם מִסָּבִיב וַתֵּשְׁבוּ בֶּטַח. יבוַתִּרְאוּ כִּי נָחָשׁ מֶלֶךְ בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן בָּא עֲלֵיכֶם וַתֹּאמְרוּ לִי לֹא כִּי מֶלֶךְ יִמְלֹךְ עָלֵינוּ: וַיהוה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם מַלְכְּכֶם. יגוְעַתָּה הִנֵּה הַמֶּלֶךְ אֲשֶׁר בְּחַרְתֶּם אֲשֶׁר שְׁאֶלְתֶּם; וְהִנֵּה נָתַן יהוה עֲלֵיכֶם מֶלֶךְ. ידאִם תִּירְאוּ אֶת יהוה וַעֲבַדְתֶּם אֹתוֹ וּשְׁמַעְתֶּם בְּקוֹלוֹ וְלֹא תַמְרוּ אֶת פִּי יהוה וִהְיִתֶם גַּם אַתֶּם וְגַם הַמֶּלֶךְ אֲשֶׁר מָלַךְ עֲלֵיכֶם אַחַר יהוה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם. טווְאִם לֹא תִשְׁמְעוּ בְּקוֹל יהוה וּמְרִיתֶם אֶת פִּי יהוה וְהָיְתָה יַד יהוה בָּכֶם וּבַאֲבֹתֵיכֶם. טזגַּם עַתָּה הִתְיַצְּבוּ וּרְאוּ אֶת הַדָּבָר הַגָּדוֹל הַזֶּה אֲשֶׁר יהוה עֹשֶׂה לְעֵינֵיכֶם. יזהֲלוֹא קְצִיר חִטִּים הַיּוֹם אֶקְרָא אֶל יהוה וְיִתֵּן קֹלוֹת וּמָטָר; וּדְעוּ וּרְאוּ כִּי רָעַתְכֶם רַבָּה אֲשֶׁר עֲשִׂיתֶם בְּעֵינֵי יהוה לִשְׁאוֹל לָכֶם מֶלֶךְ. יחוַיִּקְרָא שְׁמוּאֵל אֶל יהוה וַיִּתֵּן יהוה קֹלֹת וּמָטָר בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא; וַיִּירָא כָל הָעָם מְאֹד אֶת יהוה וְאֶת שְׁמוּאֵל. יטוַיֹּאמְרוּ כָל הָעָם אֶל שְׁמוּאֵל הִתְפַּלֵּל בְּעַד עֲבָדֶיךָ אֶל יהוה אֱלֹהֶיךָ וְאַל נָמוּת: כִּי יָסַפְנוּ עַל כָּל חַטֹּאתֵינוּ רָעָה לִשְׁאֹל לָנוּ מֶלֶךְ. כוַיֹּאמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל אֶל הָעָם אַל תִּירָאוּ אַתֶּם עֲשִׂיתֶם אֵת כָּל הָרָעָה הַזֹּאת; אַךְ אַל תָּסוּרוּ מֵאַחֲרֵי יהוה וַעֲבַדְתֶּם אֶת יהוה בְּכָל לְבַבְכֶם. כאוְלֹא תָּסוּרוּ: כִּי אַחֲרֵי הַתֹּהוּ אֲשֶׁר לֹא יוֹעִילוּ וְלֹא יַצִּילוּ כִּי תֹהוּ הֵמָּה. כבכִּי לֹא יִטֹּשׁ יהוה אֶת עַמּוֹ בַּעֲבוּר שְׁמוֹ הַגָּדוֹל: כִּי הוֹאִיל יהוה לַעֲשׂוֹת אֶתְכֶם לוֹ לְעָם.
כגגַּם אָנֹכִי חָלִילָה לִּי מֵחֲטֹא לַיהוה מֵחֲדֹל לְהִתְפַּלֵּל בַּעַדְכֶם; וְהוֹרֵיתִי אֶתְכֶם בְּדֶרֶךְ הַטּוֹבָה וְהַיְשָׁרָה. כדאַךְ יְראוּ אֶת יהוה וַעֲבַדְתֶּם אֹתוֹ בֶּאֱמֶת בְּכָל לְבַבְכֶם: כִּי רְאוּ אֵת אֲשֶׁר הִגְדִּל עִמָּכֶם. כהוְאִם הָרֵעַ תָּרֵעוּ גַּם אַתֶּם גַּם מַלְכְּכֶם תִּסָּפוּ.
