1And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Sha’ul, that the nefesh of Yehonatan was knit with the nefesh of David, and Yehonatan loved him as his own nefesh. 2And Sha’ul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father’s house. 3Then Yehonatan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own nefesh. 4And Yehonatan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his apparel, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle. 5And David went out; wherever Sha’ul sent him, he had good success; and Sha’ul set him over the men of war; and it was good in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Sha’ul’s servants.
6And it came to pass as they came, when David returned from the slaughter of the P’lishti, that the women came out of all the cities of Yisra’el, singing and dancing, to meet Melekh Sha’ul, with timbrels, with joy, and with three-stringed instruments. 7And the women sang one to another in their play, and said, “Sha’ul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.” 8And Sha’ul was very wroth, and this saying displeased him; and he said, “They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands; and all he lacks is the kingdom!” 9And Sha’ul eyed David from that day and forward.
10And it came to pass on the morrow, that an evil spirit from Elohim came mightily upon Sha’ul, and he raved in the midst of the house; and David played with his hand, as he did day by day; and Sha’ul had his spear in his hand. 11And Sha’ul cast the spear; for he said, “I will smite David even to the wall.” And David stepped aside out of his presence twice. 12And Sha’ul was afraid of David, because יהוה was with him, and was departed from Sha’ul. 13Therefore Sha’ul removed him from him, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.
14And David had great success in all his ways; and יהוה was with him. 15And when Sha’ul saw that he had great success, he stood in awe of him. 16But all Yisra’el and Yehudah loved David; for he went out and came in before them.
17And Sha’ul said to David, “Behold my elder daughter Merav, her will I give you as a wife; only be valiant for me, and fight the battles of יהוה .” For Sha’ul said, “Let not my hand be upon him, but let the hand of the P’lishtim be upon him.”
18And David said unto Sha’ul, “Who am I, and what is my life, or my father’s family in Yisra’el, that I should be son-in-law to HaMelekh?’ 19But it came to pass at the time when Merav, Shaul’s daughter, should have been given to David, that she was given unto Adri’el the Mekholati as a wife. 20And Mikhal Sha’ul’s daughter loved David; and they told Sha’ul, and the thing pleased him. 21And Sha’ul said, “I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the P’lishtim may be against him.” Therefore Sha’ul said to David, “You shall this day be my son-in-law through one of the two.” 22And Sha’ul commanded his servants, “Speak with David secretly, and say, ‘Behold, HaMelekh has delight in you, and all his servants love you; now therefore be the son-in-law of HaMelekh’.” 23And Sha’ul’s servants spoke those words in the ears of David. And David said, “Does it seem to you a light thing to be the son-in-law of HaMelekh, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?” 24And the servants of Sha’ul told him, saying, “On this manner spoke David.” 25And Sha’ul said, “Thus shall you say to David, ‘HaMelekh desires not any dowry, but a hundred foreskins of the P’lishtim, to be avenged of the enemies of HaMelekh’.” For Sha’ul thought to make David fall by the hand of the P’lishtim. 26And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the son-in-law of HaMelekh. And the days were not expired; 27and David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the P’lishtim two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full number to HaMelekh, that he might be the son-in-law of HaMelekh. And Sha’ul gave him Mikhal his daughter as a wife. 28And Sha’ul saw and knew that יהוה was with David; and Mikhal Sha’ul’s daughter loved him. 29And Sha’ul was yet the more afraid of David; and Sha’ul was David’s enemy continually.
30Then the princes of the P’lishtim went forth; and it came to pass, as often as they went forth, that David prospered more than all the servants of Sha’ul; so that his name was much cherished.
אוַיְהִי כְּכַלֹּתוֹ לְדַבֵּר אֶל שָׁאוּל וְנֶפֶשׁ יְהוֹנָתָן נִקְשְׁרָה בְּנֶפֶשׁ דָּוִד; ויאהבו (וַיֶּאֱהָבֵהוּ) יְהוֹנָתָן כְּנַפְשׁוֹ. בוַיִּקָּחֵהוּ שָׁאוּל בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא; וְלֹא נְתָנוֹ לָשׁוּב בֵּית אָבִיו. גוַיִּכְרֹת יְהוֹנָתָן וְדָוִד בְּרִית בְּאַהֲבָתוֹ אֹתוֹ כְּנַפְשׁוֹ. דוַיִּתְפַּשֵּׁט יְהוֹנָתָן אֶת הַמְּעִיל אֲשֶׁר עָלָיו וַיִּתְּנֵהוּ לְדָוִד; וּמַדָּיו וְעַד חַרְבּוֹ וְעַד קַשְׁתּוֹ וְעַד חֲגֹרוֹ. הוַיֵּצֵא דָוִד בְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר יִשְׁלָחֶנּוּ שָׁאוּל יַשְׂכִּיל וַיְשִׂמֵהוּ שָׁאוּל עַל אַנְשֵׁי הַמִּלְחָמָה; וַיִּיטַב בְּעֵינֵי כָל הָעָם וְגַם בְּעֵינֵי עַבְדֵי שָׁאוּל.
ווַיְהִי בְּבוֹאָם בְּשׁוּב דָּוִד מֵהַכּוֹת אֶת הַפְּלִשְׁתִּי וַתֵּצֶאנָה הַנָּשִׁים מִכָּל עָרֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לשור (לָשִׁיר) וְהַמְּחֹלוֹת לִקְרַאת שָׁאוּל הַמֶּלֶךְ בְּתֻפִּים בְּשִׂמְחָה וּבְשָׁלִשִׁים. זוַתַּעֲנֶינָה הַנָּשִׁים הַמְשַׂחֲקוֹת וַתֹּאמַרְןָ: הִכָּה שָׁאוּל בַּאֲלָפָו וְדָוִד בְּרִבְבֹתָיו. חוַיִּחַר לְשָׁאוּל מְאֹד וַיֵּרַע בְּעֵינָיו הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה וַיֹּאמֶר נָתְנוּ לְדָוִד רְבָבוֹת וְלִי נָתְנוּ הָאֲלָפִים; וְעוֹד לוֹ אַךְ הַמְּלוּכָה. טוַיְהִי שָׁאוּל עון (עוֹיֵן) אֶת דָּוִד מֵהַיּוֹם הַהוּא וָהָלְאָה.
יוַיְהִי מִמָּחֳרָת וַתִּצְלַח רוּחַ אֱלֹהִים רָעָה אֶל שָׁאוּל וַיִּתְנַבֵּא בְתוֹךְ הַבַּיִת וְדָוִד מְנַגֵּן בְּיָדוֹ כְּיוֹם בְּיוֹם; וְהַחֲנִית בְּיַד שָׁאוּל. יאוַיָּטֶל שָׁאוּל אֶת הַחֲנִית וַיֹּאמֶר אַכֶּה בְדָוִד וּבַקִּיר; וַיִּסֹּב דָּוִד מִפָּנָיו פַּעֲמָיִם. יבוַיִּרָא שָׁאוּל מִלִּפְנֵי דָוִד: כִּי הָיָה יהוה עִמּוֹ וּמֵעִם שָׁאוּל סָר. יגוַיְסִרֵהוּ שָׁאוּל מֵעִמּוֹ וַיְשִׂמֵהוּ לוֹ שַׂר אָלֶף; וַיֵּצֵא וַיָּבֹא לִפְנֵי הָעָם.
ידוַיְהִי דָוִד לְכָל דְּרָכָו מַשְׂכִּיל; וַיהוה עִמּוֹ. טווַיַּרְא שָׁאוּל אֲשֶׁר הוּא מַשְׂכִּיל מְאֹד; וַיָּגָר מִפָּנָיו. טזוְכָל יִשְׂרָאֵל וִיהוּדָה אֹהֵב אֶת דָּוִד: כִּי הוּא יוֹצֵא וָבָא לִפְנֵיהֶם.
יזוַיֹּאמֶר שָׁאוּל אֶל דָּוִד הִנֵּה בִתִּי הַגְּדוֹלָה מֵרַב אֹתָהּ אֶתֶּן לְךָ לְאִשָּׁה אַךְ הֱיֵה לִי לְבֶן חַיִל וְהִלָּחֵם מִלְחֲמוֹת יהוה ; וְשָׁאוּל אָמַר אַל תְּהִי יָדִי בּוֹ וּתְהִי בוֹ יַד פְּלִשְׁתִּים.
יחוַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִד אֶל שָׁאוּל מִי אָנֹכִי וּמִי חַיַּי מִשְׁפַּחַת אָבִי בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל כִּי אֶהְיֶה חָתָן לַמֶּלֶךְ. יטוַיְהִי בְּעֵת תֵּת אֶת מֵרַב בַּת שָׁאוּל לְדָוִד; וְהִיא נִתְּנָה לְעַדְרִיאֵל הַמְּחֹלָתִי לְאִשָּׁה. כוַתֶּאֱהַב מִיכַל בַּת שָׁאוּל אֶת דָּוִד; וַיַּגִּדוּ לְשָׁאוּל וַיִּשַׁר הַדָּבָר בְּעֵינָיו. כאוַיֹּאמֶר שָׁאוּל אֶתְּנֶנָּה לּוֹ וּתְהִי לוֹ לְמוֹקֵשׁ וּתְהִי בוֹ יַד פְּלִשְׁתִּים; וַיֹּאמֶר שָׁאוּל אֶל דָּוִד בִּשְׁתַּיִם תִּתְחַתֵּן בִּי הַיּוֹם. כבוַיְצַו שָׁאוּל אֶת עֲבָדָו דַּבְּרוּ אֶל דָּוִד בַּלָּט לֵאמֹר הִנֵּה חָפֵץ בְּךָ הַמֶּלֶךְ וְכָל עֲבָדָיו אֲהֵבוּךָ; וְעַתָּה הִתְחַתֵּן בַּמֶּלֶךְ. כגוַיְדַבְּרוּ עַבְדֵי שָׁאוּל בְּאָזְנֵי דָוִד אֶת הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה; וַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִד הַנְקַלָּה בְעֵינֵיכֶם הִתְחַתֵּן בַּמֶּלֶךְ וְאָנֹכִי אִישׁ רָשׁ וְנִקְלֶה. כדוַיַּגִּדוּ עַבְדֵי שָׁאוּל לוֹ לֵאמֹר: כַּדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה דִּבֶּר דָּוִד. כהוַיֹּאמֶר שָׁאוּל כֹּה תֹאמְרוּ לְדָוִד אֵין חֵפֶץ לַמֶּלֶךְ בְּמֹהַר כִּי בְּמֵאָה עָרְלוֹת פְּלִשְׁתִּים לְהִנָּקֵם בְּאֹיְבֵי הַמֶּלֶךְ; וְשָׁאוּל חָשַׁב לְהַפִּיל אֶת דָּוִד בְּיַד פְּלִשְׁתִּים. כווַיַּגִּדוּ עֲבָדָיו לְדָוִד אֶת הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה וַיִּשַׁר הַדָּבָר בְּעֵינֵי דָוִד לְהִתְחַתֵּן בַּמֶּלֶךְ; וְלֹא מָלְאוּ הַיָּמִים. כזוַיָּקָם דָּוִד וַיֵּלֶךְ הוּא וַאֲנָשָׁיו וַיַּךְ בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּים מָאתַיִם אִישׁ וַיָּבֵא דָוִד אֶת עָרְלֹתֵיהֶם וַיְמַלְאוּם לַמֶּלֶךְ לְהִתְחַתֵּן בַּמֶּלֶךְ; וַיִּתֶּן לוֹ שָׁאוּל אֶת מִיכַל בִּתּוֹ לְאִשָּׁה. כחוַיַּרְא שָׁאוּל וַיֵּדַע כִּי יהוה עִם דָּוִד; וּמִיכַל בַּת שָׁאוּל אֲהֵבַתְהוּ. כטוַיֹּאסֶף שָׁאוּל לֵרֹא מִפְּנֵי דָוִד עוֹד; וַיְהִי שָׁאוּל אֹיֵב אֶת דָּוִד כָּל הַיָּמִים.
לוַיֵּצְאוּ שָׂרֵי פְלִשְׁתִּים; וַיְהִי מִדֵּי צֵאתָם שָׂכַל דָּוִד מִכֹּל עַבְדֵי שָׁאוּל וַיִּיקַר שְׁמוֹ מְאֹד.
