1And Khanah prayed, and said, “My heart exults in יהוה , my horn is exalted in יהוה ; my mouth is enlarged over my enemies; because I rejoice in Your Salvation. 2There is none as kadosh as יהוה , for there is none beside You; neither is there any rock like our Elohim. 3Multiply not exceedingly proud talk; let not arrogance come out of your mouth; for יהוה is El De’ut, and by Him actions are weighed. 4The bows of the mighty men are broken, and they that stumbled are girded with strength. 5They that were full have hired out themselves for bread; and they that were hungry have ceased; while the barren has borne seven, she that had many children has languished. 6 יהוה kills, and makes alive; He brings down to the grave, and brings up. 7 יהוה makes poor, and makes rich; He brings low, He also lifts up. 8He raises up the poor out of the dust, He lifts up the needy from the dung-hill, to make them sit with princes, and inherit the throne of glory; for the pillars of the earth belong to יהוה , and He has set the world upon them. 9He will keep the feet of His K’doshim, but the wicked shall be put to silence in darkness; for not by strength shall man prevail. 10They that strive with יהוה shall be broken to pieces; against them will He thunder in heaven; יהוה will judge the ends of the earth; and He will give strength unto His Melekh, and exalt the horn of His Mashi’akh.”
11And Elkanah went to Ramah to his house. And the child did minister unto יהוה before Eli the kohen. 12Now the sons of Eli were base men; they knew not יהוה . And13 the custom of the kohanim with the people was, that, when any man offered sacrifice, the kohen’s servant came, while the flesh was in seething, with a flesh-hook of three teeth in his hand; 14 and he struck it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; all that the flesh-hook brought up the kohen took therewith. So they did unto all Yisra’el that came there in Shiloh. 15Yes, before the fat was made to smoke, the kohen’s servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, “Give flesh to roast for the kohen; for he will not have sodden flesh of you, but raw.” 16And if the man said unto him, “Let the fat be made to smoke first of all, and then take as much as your soul desires;” then he would say, “Nay, but you shall give it me now; and if not, I will take it by force.” 17And the sin of the young men was very great before יהוה ; for the men dealt contemptuously with the offering of יהוה . But 18 Shmu’el ministered before יהוה , being a child, girded with a linen efod. 19Moreover his mother made him a little robe, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. 20And Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, and say, ” יהוה give you seed of this woman for the loan which was lent to יהוה .” And they would go unto their own home. 21So יהוה remembered Khanah, and she conceived, and bore three sons and two daughters. And the child Shmu’el grew before יהוה .
22Now Eli was very old; and he heard all that his sons did unto all Yisra’el, and how that they lay with the women that did service at the door of the tent of meeting. 23And he said unto them, “Why do you do such things? For I hear evil reports concerning you from all this people. 24Nay, my sons; for it is no good report which I hear that the people of יהוה do spread abroad. 25If one man sins against another, Elohim shall judge him; but if a man sins against יהוה , who shall entreat for him?” But they hearkened not unto the voice of their father, that יהוה would slay them. 26And the child Shmu’el grew on, and increased in favor both with יהוה , and also with men.
27And there came a man of Elohim unto Eli, and said unto him, “Thus says יהוה : Did I reveal Myself unto the house of your father, when they were in Mitzrayim in bondage to Paroh’s house? 28And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Yisra’el to be My kohen, to go up unto My Mizbe’akh, to burn incense, to wear an efod before Me? And did I give unto the house of your father all the offerings of B’nei Yisra’el made by fire? 29Why, then, do you kick at My sacrifice and at My offering, which I have commanded in My habitation; and honor your sons above Me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Yisra’el My people? 30Therefore יהוה , Elohei Yisra’el, says, ‘I said indeed that your house, and the house of your father, should walk before Me forever;’ but now יהוה says, ‘Be it far from Me; for them that honor Me I will honor, and they that despise Me shall be lightly esteemed. 31Behold, the days come, that I will cut off your arm, and the arm of your father’s house, that there shall not be an old man in your house. 32And you shall behold a rival in My habitation, in all the good which shall be done to Yisra’el; and there shall not be an old man in your house forever. 33Yet will I not cut off every man of yours from My Mizbe’akh, to make your eyes to fail, and your heart to languish; and all the increase of your house shall die young men. 34And this shall be the sign unto you, that which shall come upon your two sons, on Khafni and Pin’khas: in one day they shall die, both of them. 35And I will raise Me up a faithful kohen, that shall do according to that which is in My heart and in My mind; and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before My Mashi’akh forever. 36And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left in your house shall come and bow down to him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread, and shall say, ‘Put me, I pray, into one of the offices of the kohanim, that I may eat a morsel of bread.””
אוַתִּתְפַּלֵּל חַנָּה וַתֹּאמַר עָלַץ לִבִּי בַּיהוה רָמָה קַרְנִי בַּיהוה ; רָחַב פִּי עַל אוֹיְבַי כִּי שָׂמַחְתִּי בִּישׁוּעָתֶךָ. באֵין קָדוֹשׁ כַּיהוָה כִּי אֵין בִּלְתֶּךָ; וְאֵין צוּר כֵּאלֹהֵינוּ. גאַל תַּרְבּוּ תְדַבְּרוּ גְּבֹהָה גְבֹהָה יֵצֵא עָתָק מִפִּיכֶם: כִּי אֵל דֵּעוֹת יהוה ולא (וְלוֹ) נִתְכְּנוּ עֲלִלוֹת. דקֶשֶׁת גִּבֹּרִים חַתִּים; וְנִכְשָׁלִים אָזְרוּ חָיִל. השְׂבֵעִים בַּלֶּחֶם נִשְׂכָּרוּ וּרְעֵבִים חָדֵלּוּ עַד עֲקָרָה יָלְדָה שִׁבְעָה וְרַבַּת בָּנִים אֻמְלָלָה. ו יהוה מֵמִית וּמְחַיֶּה; מוֹרִיד שְׁאוֹל וַיָּעַל. ז יהוה מוֹרִישׁ וּמַעֲשִׁיר; מַשְׁפִּיל אַף מְרוֹמֵם. חמֵקִים מֵעָפָר דָּל מֵאַשְׁפֹּת יָרִים אֶבְיוֹן לְהוֹשִׁיב עִם נְדִיבִים וְכִסֵּא כָבוֹד יַנְחִלֵם: כִּי לַיהוה מְצֻקֵי אֶרֶץ וַיָּשֶׁת עֲלֵיהֶם תֵּבֵל. טרַגְלֵי חֲסִידָו יִשְׁמֹר וּרְשָׁעִים בַּחֹשֶׁךְ יִדָּמּוּ: כִּי לֹא בְכֹחַ יִגְבַּר אִישׁ. י יהוה יֵחַתּוּ מְרִיבָו עָלָו בַּשָּׁמַיִם יַרְעֵם יהוה יָדִין אַפְסֵי אָרֶץ; וְיִתֶּן עֹז לְמַלְכּוֹ וְיָרֵם קֶרֶן מְשִׁיחוֹ.
יאוַיֵּלֶךְ אֶלְקָנָה הָרָמָתָה עַל בֵּיתוֹ; וְהַנַּעַר הָיָה מְשָׁרֵת אֶת יהוה אֶת פְּנֵי עֵלִי הַכֹּהֵן. יבוּבְנֵי עֵלִי בְּנֵי בְלִיָּעַל: לֹא יָדְעוּ אֶת יהוה . יגוּמִשְׁפַּט הַכֹּהֲנִים אֶת הָעָם כָּל אִישׁ זֹבֵחַ זֶבַח וּבָא נַעַר הַכֹּהֵן כְּבַשֵּׁל הַבָּשָׂר וְהַמַּזְלֵג שְׁלֹשׁ הַשִּׁנַּיִם בְּיָדוֹ. ידוְהִכָּה בַכִּיּוֹר אוֹ בַדּוּד אוֹ בַקַּלַּחַת אוֹ בַפָּרוּר כֹּל אֲשֶׁר יַעֲלֶה הַמַּזְלֵג יִקַּח הַכֹּהֵן בּוֹ; כָּכָה יַעֲשׂוּ לְכָל יִשְׂרָאֵל הַבָּאִים שָׁם בְּשִׁלֹה. טוגַּם בְּטֶרֶם יַקְטִרוּן אֶת הַחֵלֶב וּבָא נַעַר הַכֹּהֵן וְאָמַר לָאִישׁ הַזֹּבֵחַ תְּנָה בָשָׂר לִצְלוֹת לַכֹּהֵן; וְלֹא יִקַּח מִמְּךָ בָּשָׂר מְבֻשָּׁל כִּי אִם חָי. טזוַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו הָאִישׁ קַטֵּר יַקְטִירוּן כַּיּוֹם הַחֵלֶב וְקַח לְךָ כַּאֲשֶׁר תְּאַוֶּה נַפְשֶׁךָ; וְאָמַר לו (לֹא) כִּי עַתָּה תִתֵּן וְאִם לֹא לָקַחְתִּי בְחָזְקָה. יזוַתְּהִי חַטַּאת הַנְּעָרִים גְּדוֹלָה מְאֹד אֶת פְּנֵי יהוה : כִּי נִאֲצוּ הָאֲנָשִׁים אֵת מִנְחַת יהוה . יחוּשְׁמוּאֵל מְשָׁרֵת אֶת פְּנֵי יהוה : נַעַר חָגוּר אֵפוֹד בָּד. יטוּמְעִיל קָטֹן תַּעֲשֶׂה לּוֹ אִמּוֹ וְהַעַלְתָה לוֹ מִיָּמִים יָמִימָה בַּעֲלוֹתָהּ אֶת אִישָׁהּ לִזְבֹּחַ אֶת זֶבַח הַיָּמִים. כוּבֵרַךְ עֵלִי אֶת אֶלְקָנָה וְאֶת אִשְׁתּוֹ וְאָמַר יָשֵׂם יהוה לְךָ זֶרַע מִן הָאִשָּׁה הַזֹּאת תַּחַת הַשְּׁאֵלָה אֲשֶׁר שָׁאַל לַיהוה ; וְהָלְכוּ לִמְקוֹמוֹ. כאכִּי פָקַד יהוה אֶת חַנָּה וַתַּהַר וַתֵּלֶד שְׁלֹשָׁה בָנִים וּשְׁתֵּי בָנוֹת; וַיִּגְדַּל הַנַּעַר שְׁמוּאֵל עִם יהוה .
כבוְעֵלִי זָקֵן מְאֹד; וְשָׁמַע אֵת כָּל אֲשֶׁר יַעֲשׂוּן בָּנָיו לְכָל יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאֵת אֲשֶׁר יִשְׁכְּבוּן אֶת הַנָּשִׁים הַצֹּבְאוֹת פֶּתַח אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד. כגוַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם לָמָּה תַעֲשׂוּן כַּדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי שֹׁמֵעַ אֶת דִּבְרֵיכֶם רָעִים מֵאֵת כָּל הָעָם אֵלֶּה. כדאַל בָּנָי: כִּי לוֹא טוֹבָה הַשְּׁמֻעָה אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי שֹׁמֵעַ מַעֲבִרִים עַם יהוה . כהאִם יֶחֱטָא אִישׁ לְאִישׁ וּפִלְלוֹ אֱלֹהִים וְאִם לַיהוה יֶחֱטָא אִישׁ מִי יִתְפַּלֶּל לוֹ; וְלֹא יִשְׁמְעוּ לְקוֹל אֲבִיהֶם כִּי חָפֵץ יהוה לַהֲמִיתָם. כווְהַנַּעַר שְׁמוּאֵל הֹלֵךְ וְגָדֵל וָטוֹב: גַּם עִם יהוה וְגַם עִם אֲנָשִׁים.
כזוַיָּבֹא אִישׁ אֱלֹהִים אֶל עֵלִי; וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו כֹּה אָמַר יהוה הֲנִגְלֹה נִגְלֵיתִי אֶל בֵּית אָבִיךָ בִּהְיוֹתָם בְּמִצְרַיִם לְבֵית פַּרְעֹה. כחוּבָחֹר אֹתוֹ מִכָּל שִׁבְטֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לִי לְכֹהֵן לַעֲלוֹת עַל מִזְבְּחִי לְהַקְטִיר קְטֹרֶת לָשֵׂאת אֵפוֹד לְפָנָי; וָאֶתְּנָה לְבֵית אָבִיךָ אֶת כָּל אִשֵּׁי בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. כטלָמָּה תִבְעֲטוּ בְּזִבְחִי וּבְמִנְחָתִי אֲשֶׁר צִוִּיתִי מָעוֹן; וַתְּכַבֵּד אֶת בָּנֶיךָ מִמֶּנִּי לְהַבְרִיאֲכֶם מֵרֵאשִׁית כָּל מִנְחַת יִשְׂרָאֵל לְעַמִּי. ללָכֵן נְאֻם יהוה אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אָמוֹר אָמַרְתִּי בֵּיתְךָ וּבֵית אָבִיךָ יִתְהַלְּכוּ לְפָנַי עַד עוֹלָם; וְעַתָּה נְאֻם יהוה חָלִילָה לִּי כִּי מְכַבְּדַי אֲכַבֵּד וּבֹזַי יֵקָלּוּ. לאהִנֵּה יָמִים בָּאִים וְגָדַעְתִּי אֶת זְרֹעֲךָ וְאֶת זְרֹעַ בֵּית אָבִיךָ מִהְיוֹת זָקֵן בְּבֵיתֶךָ. לבוְהִבַּטְתָּ צַר מָעוֹן בְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר יֵיטִיב אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל; וְלֹא יִהְיֶה זָקֵן בְּבֵיתְךָ כָּל הַיָּמִים. לגוְאִישׁ לֹא אַכְרִית לְךָ מֵעִם מִזְבְּחִי לְכַלּוֹת אֶת עֵינֶיךָ וְלַאֲדִיב אֶת נַפְשֶׁךָ; וְכָל מַרְבִּית בֵּיתְךָ יָמוּתוּ אֲנָשִׁים. לדוְזֶה לְּךָ הָאוֹת אֲשֶׁר יָבֹא אֶל שְׁנֵי בָנֶיךָ אֶל חָפְנִי וּפִינְחָס: בְּיוֹם אֶחָד יָמוּתוּ שְׁנֵיהֶם. להוַהֲקִימֹתִי לִי כֹּהֵן נֶאֱמָן כַּאֲשֶׁר בִּלְבָבִי וּבְנַפְשִׁי יַעֲשֶׂה; וּבָנִיתִי לוֹ בַּיִת נֶאֱמָן וְהִתְהַלֵּךְ לִפְנֵי מְשִׁיחִי כָּל הַיָּמִים. לווְהָיָה כָּל הַנּוֹתָר בְּבֵיתְךָ יָבוֹא לְהִשְׁתַּחֲוֹת לוֹ לַאֲגוֹרַת כֶּסֶף וְכִכַּר לָחֶם; וְאָמַר סְפָחֵנִי נָא אֶל אַחַת הַכְּהֻנּוֹת לֶאֱכֹל פַּת לָחֶם.
