1And the Zifim came unto Sha’ul to Givatah, saying, “Does not David hide himself in the hill of Khakhilah, which is before Yeshimon?” 2Then Sha’ul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Zif, having three thousand chosen men of Yisra’el with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Zif. 3And Sha’ul pitched in the hill of Khakhilah, which is before Yeshimon by the way. But David abode in the wilderness, and he saw that Sha’ul came after him into the wilderness. 4David therefore sent out spies, and understood that Sha’ul was come of a certainty. 5And David arose, and came to the place where Sha’ul had pitched; and David beheld the place where Sha’ul lay, and Avner Ben Ner, the captain of his host; and Sha’ul lay within the barricade, and the people pitched round about him. 6Then answered David and said to Akhimelekh HaKhiti, and to Avishai Ben Tz’ru-Yah, brother to Yo’av, saying, “Who will go down with me to Sha’ul to the camp?” And Avishai said, “I will go down with you.” 7So David and Avishai came to the people by night; and, behold, Sha’ul lay sleeping within the barricade, with his spear stuck in the ground at his head; and Avner and the people lay round about him.
8Then said Avishai to David, “Elohim has delivered up your enemy into your hand this day; now therefore let me smite him, I pray, with the spear to the earth at one stroke, and I will not smite him the second time.” 9And David said to Avishai, “Destroy him not; for who can put forth his hand against the anointed of יהוה , and be guiltless?”
10And David said, “As יהוה lives, no, but יהוה shall smite him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall go down into battle, and be swept away. 11 יהוה forbid it of me, that I should put forth my hand against the anointed of יהוה ; but now take, I pray, the spear that is at his head, and the cruse of water, and let us go.”
12So David took the spear and the cruse of water from Sha’ul’s head; and they got them away, and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither did any awake; for they were all asleep; because a deep sleep from יהוה was fallen upon them. 13Then David went over to the other side, and stood on the top of the mountain afar off; a great space being between them. 14And David cried to the people, and to Avner Ben Ner, saying, “Answer not, Avner?” Then Avner answered and said, “Who are you that cries out to HaMelekh?”
15And David said to Avner, “Are you not a valiant man? And who is like you in Yisra’el? Why, then, have you not kept watch over your Adon, HaMelekh? For there came one of the people in to destroy HaMelekh, your Adon. 16This thing is not good that you have done. As יהוה lives, you deserve to die, because you have not kept watch over your Adon, the anointed of יהוה . And now, see, where the spear of HaMelekh is, and the cruse of water that was at his head!”
17And Sha’ul knew David’s voice, and said, “Is this your voice, my son David?” And David said, “It is my voice, my Adon, O Melekh.” 18And he said, “Why does my Adon pursue after his servant? For what have I done? Or what evil is in my hand? 19Now therefore, I pray, let my Adon, HaMelekh, hear the words of his servant. If it is יהוה that has stirred you up against me, let Him accept an offering; but if it is the children of men, cursed be they before יהוה ; for they have driven me out this day that I should not cleave unto the inheritance of יהוה , saying, ‘Go, serve other gods’. 20Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth away from the presence of יהוה ; for HaMelekh Yisra’el is come out to seek a single flea, as when one does hunt a partridge in the mountains.” 21Then said Sha’ul, “I have sinned; return, my son David; for I will no more do you harm, because my life was precious in your eyes this day; behold, I have played the fool and erred exceedingly.” 22And David answered and said, “Behold the spear of HaMelekh! Let then one of the young men come over and fetch it. 23And יהוה will render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness; forasmuch as יהוה delivered you into my hand today, and I would not put forth my hand against the anointed of יהוה . And24, behold, as your life was much set by this day in my eyes, so let my life be much set by in the eyes of יהוה , and let Him deliver me out of all tribulation.”
25Then Sha’ul said to David, “Blessed are you, my son, David; you shall do mightily and shall surely prevail.” So David went his way, and Sha’ul returned to his place.
אוַיָּבֹאוּ הַזִּפִים אֶל שָׁאוּל הַגִּבְעָתָה לֵאמֹר: הֲלוֹא דָוִד מִסְתַּתֵּר בְּגִבְעַת הַחֲכִילָה עַל פְּנֵי הַיְשִׁימֹן. בוַיָּקָם שָׁאוּל וַיֵּרֶד אֶל מִדְבַּר זִיף וְאִתּוֹ שְׁלֹשֶׁת אֲלָפִים אִישׁ בְּחוּרֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לְבַקֵּשׁ אֶת דָּוִד בְּמִדְבַּר זִיף. גוַיִּחַן שָׁאוּל בְּגִבְעַת הַחֲכִילָה אֲשֶׁר עַל פְּנֵי הַיְשִׁימֹן עַל הַדָּרֶךְ; וְדָוִד יֹשֵׁב בַּמִּדְבָּר וַיַּרְא כִּי בָא שָׁאוּל אַחֲרָיו הַמִּדְבָּרָה. דוַיִּשְׁלַח דָּוִד מְרַגְּלִים; וַיֵּדַע כִּי בָא שָׁאוּל אֶל נָכוֹן. הוַיָּקָם דָּוִד וַיָּבֹא אֶל הַמָּקוֹם אֲשֶׁר חָנָה שָׁם שָׁאוּל וַיַּרְא דָּוִד אֶת הַמָּקוֹם אֲשֶׁר שָׁכַב שָׁם שָׁאוּל וְאַבְנֵר בֶּן נֵר שַׂר צְבָאוֹ; וְשָׁאוּל שֹׁכֵב בַּמַּעְגָּל וְהָעָם חֹנִים סְבִיבֹתָו. ווַיַּעַן דָּוִד וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל אֲחִימֶלֶךְ הַחִתִּי וְאֶל אֲבִישַׁי בֶּן צְרוּיָה אֲחִי יוֹאָב לֵאמֹר מִי יֵרֵד אִתִּי אֶל שָׁאוּל אֶל הַמַּחֲנֶה; וַיֹּאמֶר אֲבִישַׁי אֲנִי אֵרֵד עִמָּךְ. זוַיָּבֹא דָוִד וַאֲבִישַׁי אֶל הָעָם לַיְלָה וְהִנֵּה שָׁאוּל שֹׁכֵב יָשֵׁן בַּמַּעְגָּל וַחֲנִיתוֹ מְעוּכָה בָאָרֶץ מְרַאֲשֹׁתָו; וְאַבְנֵר וְהָעָם שֹׁכְבִים סְבִיבֹתָו.
חוַיֹּאמֶר אֲבִישַׁי אֶל דָּוִד סִגַּר אֱלֹהִים הַיּוֹם אֶת אוֹיִבְךָ בְּיָדֶךָ; וְעַתָּה אַכֶּנּוּ נָא בַּחֲנִית וּבָאָרֶץ פַּעַם אַחַת וְלֹא אֶשְׁנֶה לוֹ. טוַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִד אֶל אֲבִישַׁי אַל תַּשְׁחִיתֵהוּ: כִּי מִי שָׁלַח יָדוֹ בִּמְשִׁיחַ יהוה וְנִקָּה.
יוַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִד חַי יהוה כִּי אִם יהוה יִגֳּפֶנּוּ; אוֹ יוֹמוֹ יָבוֹא וָמֵת אוֹ בַמִּלְחָמָה יֵרֵד וְנִסְפָּה. יאחָלִילָה לִּי מֵיהוה מִשְּׁלֹחַ יָדִי בִּמְשִׁיחַ יהוה ; וְעַתָּה קַח נָא אֶת הַחֲנִית אֲשֶׁר מְרַאֲשֹׁתָו וְאֶת צַפַּחַת הַמַּיִם וְנֵלְכָה לָּנוּ.
יבוַיִּקַּח דָּוִד אֶת הַחֲנִית וְאֶת צַפַּחַת הַמַּיִם מֵרַאֲשֹׁתֵי שָׁאוּל וַיֵּלְכוּ לָהֶם; וְאֵין רֹאֶה וְאֵין יוֹדֵעַ וְאֵין מֵקִיץ כִּי כֻלָּם יְשֵׁנִים כִּי תַּרְדֵּמַת יהוה נָפְלָה עֲלֵיהֶם. יגוַיַּעֲבֹר דָּוִד הָעֵבֶר וַיַּעֲמֹד עַל רֹאשׁ הָהָר מֵרָחֹק: רַב הַמָּקוֹם בֵּינֵיהֶם. ידוַיִּקְרָא דָוִד אֶל הָעָם וְאֶל אַבְנֵר בֶּן נֵר לֵאמֹר הֲלוֹא תַעֲנֶה אַבְנֵר; וַיַּעַן אַבְנֵר וַיֹּאמֶר מִי אַתָּה קָרָאתָ אֶל הַמֶּלֶךְ.
טווַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִד אֶל אַבְנֵר הֲלוֹא אִישׁ אַתָּה וּמִי כָמוֹךָ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל וְלָמָּה לֹא שָׁמַרְתָּ אֶל אֲדֹנֶיךָ הַמֶּלֶךְ: כִּי בָא אַחַד הָעָם לְהַשְׁחִית אֶת הַמֶּלֶךְ אֲדֹנֶיךָ. טזלֹא טוֹב הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה אֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתָ חַי יהוה כִּי בְנֵי מָוֶת אַתֶּם אֲשֶׁר לֹא שְׁמַרְתֶּם עַל אֲדֹנֵיכֶם עַל מְשִׁיחַ יהוה ; וְעַתָּה רְאֵה אֵי חֲנִית הַמֶּלֶךְ וְאֶת צַפַּחַת הַמַּיִם אֲשֶׁר מְרַאֲשֹׁתָו.
יזוַיַּכֵּר שָׁאוּל אֶת קוֹל דָּוִד וַיֹּאמֶר הֲקוֹלְךָ זֶה בְּנִי דָוִד; וַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִד קוֹלִי אֲדֹנִי הַמֶּלֶךְ. יחוַיֹּאמֶר לָמָּה זֶּה אֲדֹנִי רֹדֵף אַחֲרֵי עַבְדּוֹ: כִּי מֶה עָשִׂיתִי וּמַה בְּיָדִי רָעָה. יטוְעַתָּה יִשְׁמַע נָא אֲדֹנִי הַמֶּלֶךְ אֵת דִּבְרֵי עַבְדּוֹ: אִם יהוה הֱסִיתְךָ בִי יָרַח מִנְחָה וְאִם בְּנֵי הָאָדָם אֲרוּרִים הֵם לִפְנֵי יהוה כִּי גֵרְשׁוּנִי הַיּוֹם מֵהִסְתַּפֵּחַ בְּנַחֲלַת יהוה לֵאמֹר לֵךְ עֲבֹד אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים. כוְעַתָּה אַל יִפֹּל דָּמִי אַרְצָה מִנֶּגֶד פְּנֵי יהוה : כִּי יָצָא מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל לְבַקֵּשׁ אֶת פַּרְעֹשׁ אֶחָד כַּאֲשֶׁר יִרְדֹּף הַקֹּרֵא בֶּהָרִים. כאוַיֹּאמֶר שָׁאוּל חָטָאתִי שׁוּב בְּנִי דָוִד כִּי לֹא אָרַע לְךָ עוֹד תַּחַת אֲשֶׁר יָקְרָה נַפְשִׁי בְּעֵינֶיךָ הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה: הִנֵּה הִסְכַּלְתִּי וָאֶשְׁגֶּה הַרְבֵּה מְאֹד. כבוַיַּעַן דָּוִד וַיֹּאמֶר הִנֵּה החנית (חֲנִית) הַמֶּלֶךְ; וְיַעֲבֹר אֶחָד מֵהַנְּעָרִים וְיִקָּחֶהָ. כגוַיהוה יָשִׁיב לָאִישׁ אֶת צִדְקָתוֹ וְאֶת אֱמֻנָתוֹ אֲשֶׁר נְתָנְךָ יהוה הַיּוֹם בְּיָד וְלֹא אָבִיתִי לִשְׁלֹחַ יָדִי בִּמְשִׁיחַ יהוה . כדוְהִנֵּה כַּאֲשֶׁר גָּדְלָה נַפְשְׁךָ הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה בְּעֵינָי: כֵּן תִּגְדַּל נַפְשִׁי בְּעֵינֵי יהוה וְיַצִּלֵנִי מִכָּל צָרָה.
כהוַיֹּאמֶר שָׁאוּל אֶל דָּוִד בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה בְּנִי דָוִד גַּם עָשֹׂה תַעֲשֶׂה וְגַם יָכֹל תּוּכָל; וַיֵּלֶךְ דָּוִד לְדַרְכּוֹ וְשָׁאוּל שָׁב לִמְקוֹמוֹ.
