Shmu’el Alef 28 – שמואל א פרק כח

1And it came to pass in those days, that the P’lishtim gathered their hosts together for warfare, to fight with Yisra’el. And Akhish said unto David, “Know assuredly, that you shall go out with me in the host, you and your men.” 2And David said to Akhish, “Therefore you shall know what your servant will do.” And Akhish said to David, “Therefore will I make you keeper of my head forever.”

3Now Shmu’el was dead, and all Yisra’el had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, even in his own city. And Sha’ul had put away those that divined by a ghost or a familiar spirit out of the land. 4And the P’lishtim gathered themselves together, and came and pitched in Shunem; and Sha’ul gathered all Yisra’el together, and they pitched in Gilbo’a. 5And when Sha’ul saw the host of the P’lishtim, he was afraid, and his heart trembled greatly. 6And when Sha’ul inquired of  יהוה ,  יהוה  answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by nevi’im. 7Then said Sha’ul unto his servants, “Seek me a woman that divines by a ghost, that I may go to her, and inquire of her.” And his servants said to him, “Behold, there is a woman that divines by a ghost at Ein Dor.” 8And Sha’ul disguised himself, and put on other raiment, and went, he and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night; and he said, “Divine unto me, I pray, by a ghost, and bring up for me whomsoever I shall name unto you.” 9And the woman said unto him, “Behold, you know what Sha’ul has done, how he has cut off those that divine by a ghost or a familiar spirit out of the land; why, then, do you lay a snare for my life, to cause me to die?” 10And Sha’ul swore to her by  יהוה , saying, “As  יהוה  lives, there shall no punishment happen to you for this thing.” 11Then said the woman, “Whom shall I bring up unto you?” And he said, “Bring me up Shmu’el.” 12And when the woman saw Shmu’el, she cried with a loud voice; and the woman spoke to Sha’ul, saying, “Why have you deceived me? For you are Sha’ul.” 13And HaMelekh said unto her, “Be not afraid; for what do you see?” And the woman said unto Sha’ul, “I see mighty ones coming up out of the earth.” 14And he said unto her, “What form is he of?” And she said, “An old man comes up; and he is covered with a robe.” And Sha’ul perceived that it was Shmu’el, and he bowed with his face to the ground, and prostrated himself.

15And Shmu’el said to Sha’ul, “Why have you disquieted me, to bring me up?” And Sha’ul answered, “I am sore distressed; for the P’lishtim make war against me, and Elohim is departed from me, and answers me no more, neither by nevi’im, nor by dreams; therefore I have called you, that you may make known unto me what I shall do.”

16And Shmu’el said, “Why, then, do you ask of me, seeing  יהוה  is departed from you, and is become your adversary? 17And  יהוה  has wrought for Himself; as He spoke by me; and  יהוה  has rent the kingdom out of your hand, and given it to your neighbor, even to David. 18Because you did not hearken to the voice of  יהוה , and did not execute His fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore has  יהוה  done this thing unto you this day. 19Moreover,  יהוה  will deliver Yisra’el also with you into the hand of the P’lishtim; and tomorrow shall you and your sons be with me;  יהוה  will deliver the host of Yisra’el also into the hand of the P’lishtim.”

20Then Sha’ul fell straightway his full length upon the earth, and was sore afraid, because of the words of Shmu’el; and there was no strength in him; for he had eaten no bread all the day, nor all the night. 21And the woman came unto Sha’ul, and saw that he was sore affrighted, and said unto him, “Behold, your handmaid has hearkened unto your voice, and I have put my life in my hand, and have hearkened unto your words which you spoke unto me. 22Now therefore, I pray, hearken you also unto the voice of your handmaid, and let me set a morsel of bread before you; and eat, that you may have strength, when you go on your way.” 23But he refused, and said, “I will not eat.” But his servants, together with the woman, urged him; and he hearkened unto their voice. So he arose from the earth, and sat upon the bed. 24And the woman had a fatted calf in the house; and she made haste, and killed it; and she took flour, and kneaded it, and baked unleavened bread thereof; 25and she brought it before Sha’ul, and before his servants; and they did eat. Then they rose up, and went away that night.
